No event encapsulates the Spirit of Orange better than our Law Alumni Weekend. Turn to p20 to see some of the joyful moments we captured across a truly spectacular three days. We not only enjoyed record attendance, the program—and our students—truly benefitted from your participation and expertise. I firmly believe that our alumni family’s enthusiasm is fueled by an ever-increasing engagement with the College and our students. In fact, alumni have become an integral part of our key events—such as Law Alumni Weekend and Orientation—helping to create rich and diverse programming, joining panels, presenting to students, networking, and lecturing. We simply can’t make these events the successes they are without your help. But your involvement doesn’t stop with these signature events. As the pages of this magazine attest, alumni support their College in myriad ways year-round. You hire our graduates as externs, clerks, and staff (p12); you encourage philanthropy through friendly intra-mural competitions (p12); you support your favorite programs with gifts (p46); and in many more ways as illustrated in this magazine. What does all this dedication to your alma mater lead to? Spectacular results. Your philanthropy underpins our success. Last year, our alumni—along with friends, faculty, staff, and students—pledged or gave nearly $5.5 million to the College. To read our Honor Roll of Donors, please turn to p26 Thanks to your contributions, we have hired six new faculty members, enrolled a diverse and academically accomplished class of J.D. and LL.M. students, posted excellent advocacy competition results, launched our own national advocacy competition, became a Top Ten law school for funded legal research, hosted international symposia and conferences, and grown our online law degree program–JDinteractive–gaining accolades along the way. Believe me, other law schools are taking note of our innovations and our results. In the coming year, please carry your enthusiasm and energy into an exciting new campaign for Syracuse University. Forever Orange: The Campaign for Syracuse University aims to further advance academic excellence, provide an unsurpassed student experience, and create unique learning opportunities that leverage the University's distinctive strengths and impact our world in extraordinary ways. As a part of Forever Orange, the College will raise $38 million to grow our endowment and current use funds for scholarships, faculty leadership and innovation, and the Law Annual Fund. Turn to p8 to find out more about the campaign and to hear from campaign co-chairs Melanie Gray L’81 and Marnin Michaels L’96. Thanks to your generous support, the College will continue to be known for its unique blend of innovation and tradition—now and into the future. I am grateful for all you do for the College of Law and look forward to seeing you in 2020.

Very truly yours,

2 3 CLASS ACT! Giving Continues to Raise the ‘Bar’ An Open Letter to the Class of 2019

December 2019

Dear Class of 2019: Thank you!

Even though you left Dineen Hall only a few months ago, your legacy already looms large. Your participation in the Class Act! campaign was inspiring—not only to us but to the entire University, as the campaign once again set a new record for student giving. Each year, when results are announced, the College of Law shines brightly across campus. We are the beneficiary. Our J.D. and LL.M. Class of 2022 represents 36 states and 28 countries. We speak a collective 25 languages, 34% of us identify as students of color, and 17 of us are veterans or active-duty members of the military. Twenty-nine of us are members of the inaugural JDinteractive online law degree program class—JDi has enabled us to pursue a legal education that would not otherwise have been possible, and it is truly life-changing.

As you know, philanthropic support is not only crucial to the success of the College of Law, it is a key factor in the decision to enroll in law school. The scholarships we received and the superior academic programs and experiential learning opportunities were determining factors in choosing Syracuse. Through your generous gifts, you have made a legal education possible for many of us, and you've help make it rewarding. As you continue the busy and exciting new chapter of your lives, your philanthropic achievements while attending Syracuse may seem insignificant or a long distance away. Please know the effects of your gift are enormous, many, and present. The example that you have set for those who follow in your footsteps is an important part of your legacy. Rest assured, the Class of 2022 will continue this proud tradition, and we are very grateful for your example. We look forward to meeting many of you in Dineen Hall next fall during Law Alumni Weekend, or as interns and externs at your firms. Until then, all our best wishes, and Go Orange! The Giving Book is Going Digital!

One of the advantages of a Syracuse law education is that it prepares students for 21st century legal practice, a place where e-discovery, big data, and artificial intelligence are becoming commonplace.

That is, at the College of Law, we embrace technology.

And that’s one reason we are taking the Giving Book online in future issues. An online edition will allow for more efficient and timely production, help streamline our alumni communications, and enable resources to be applied to other projects. It is also environmentally friendly for a sustainable future.

Online issues of the law magazine, as well as an archive of the Dean's Dispatch newsletter, can be found in the Alumni section of law.syr.edu.

We’re always grateful for the positive feedback we receive about our magazines. Thank you for your support, and see you at law.syr.edu!
