An extensive overview was created on all international or national ichthyoplankton surveys carried out in the ICES area (Section 3). Before the SGSIPS meeting each indi- vidual ichthyoplankton survey group prepared their opinions on the consolidation of all the ICES ichthyoplankton groups (Section 4). Based on the documented opinions of the individual Working groups SGSIPS came to the following conclusion (Section 5): SGSIPS is generally in favour of providing a forum for discussions and inter- change of ideas and data concerning ichthyoplankton surveys, ecology and biology. However, the group agreed that the consolidation of all personnel associated with surveys that involve ichthyoplankton in to one working group is not a viable option. SGSIPS recommends that an overarching Working Group, Working Group on Atlan- tic Fish Larvae and Eggs Surveys (WGALES), is formed and thus replaces the current SGSIPS, to provide a forum for discussion and dissemination on matters pertaining to spawning dynamics, ichthyoplankton biology, ecology, surveys and egg and larval production methods. Each of the current survey specific working groups are to main- tain their working group status and continue with their survey planning and report- ing as they currently do. WGALES will provide an interface for SCICOM and ACOM for matters concerning spawning dynamics, ichthyoplankton biology, ecology, sur- veys and egg and larval production methods. The core membership of WGALES should consist of two co-chairs which rotate out of sequence on a 6 year basis and the chairs or representatives of each of the survey working groups. In addition all mem- bers of each of the survey working groups should also be members. WGALES will meet at 2 to 3 year intervals. SGSIPS recommends that the workshops and meetings of WGALES should be funded by DCF in order to maximize the attendance and real- ize the objectives of an overarching forum. The first meeting of WGALES will be a workshop in San Sebastian, Spain in October 2014 to present current ichthyoplankton surveys, design, estimation methods and challenges and present current understanding and future research needs of natural mortality of eggs and larvae (Section 6). During this SGSIPS meeting there was a subgroup meeting on the planning of the winter spawning habitats survey in the North Sea, following recommendations from WGEGGS. All participants in the MIK-sampling agreed to try to use the MIKey M nets during the 2013 MIK-survey in order to sample fish eggs. This will ensure cover- age of the whole North Sea in February-March 2013 (Section 7). In 2011 WGEGGS was dissolved, but since the planning of the individual surveys will still be carried out by the individual ichthyoplankton survey groups, SGSIPS recommends that WGEGGS will be reinstated to plan and coordinate the winter spawning habitats and locations in the North Sea surveys. Also recommendations from IBTSWG concerning the sampling of herring larvae during the MIK-survey were addressed during this SGSIPS meeting (Section 8). Cur- rently the meshes of the MIK-nets differ between the institutes. The different meshes have an effect on the size of the herring larvae caught. SGSIPS recommends that the effect of the shape and size of the meshes should be thoroughly investigated and the MIK mesh size and shape should be standardized as much as possible. The MIK- 2 | ICES SGSIPS REPORT 2012 manual should be updated with an extensive explanation of the calculation of the MIK-index and a description of the data in the MIK-database. The manual should also state that MIK-sampling should only be carried out in water depths of 200m or less. Currently the MIK-index does not include the ‘Downs’ herring larvae < 20 mm. SGSIPS recommends that the size of the ‘Downs’ component in the MIK samples should be estimated. The next step is to determine if and then how these larvae could be included in the MIK-index. Despite the large number of hatching herring larvae, recruitment has been low in the recent years. Models suggest that first-feeding of the herring larvae might be problematic. SGSIPS recommends that water samples should be collected during the IHLS and MIK surveys in order to investigate the microzoo- plankton availability for the herring larvae. ICES SGSIPS REPORT 2012 | 3 1 Opening of the meeting The Study Group on Standards in Ichthyoplankton Surveys (SGSIPS) met 8–10 May 2012 in Hamburg, Germany. Nine participants from six countries participated in the meeting. The participant list can be found in Annex 1. The terms of reference for the meeting were: a ) Compile an overview of the work topics of the different ichthyoplankton surveys carried out in the ICES area; b ) Compile an overview of possibilities (positive) and problems (negative) of the consolidation of the ICES ichthyoplankton WGs and WKs; c ) Prepare advice based on ToR a and b on the consolidation of the ICES ich- thyoplankton groups; d ) Prepare ToRs and plan for the first meeting of the merged ichthyoplankton
