“Lip-Sync for Your Life” (Abroad)
volume 9 issue 17/2020 “LIP-SYNC FOR YOUR LIFE” (ABROAD) THE DISTRIBUTION, ADAPTATION AND CIRCULATION OF RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE IN ITALY Luca Barra Dipartimento delle Arti, Università di Bologna [email protected] Paola Brembilla Dipartimento delle Arti, Università di Bologna [email protected] Linda Rossato Dipartimento di Studi Linguistici e Culturali Comparati, Università Ca’ Foscari, Venezia [email protected] Lucio Spaziante Dipartimento di Filosofia e Comunicazione, Università di Bologna [email protected] Abstract: The article aims to critically explore and understand the ways both RuPaul’s star persona and its show, RuPaul’s Drag Race, are distributed in Italy, circulate across, and impact on the Italian television industry and media culture. It also aims to express how many forms of national mediation, professional negotiation and audience reception deeply modify, and re-shape the TV product. To tackle the manifold facets of this case, four aspects will be analyzed: (trans)national distribution; adaptation and dubbing; global/local stardom; reception and cultural impact. Over a decade, the Italian edition and distribution of the show have changed, together with the national media landscape and its audiences. Keywords: Italian television, media industries, reception studies, dubbing, stardom, celebrity 1 Introduction RuPaul’s Drag Race is a TV show, a reality competition with drag queen contestants performing and being evaluated by expert judges, which has reached the eleventh season and given birth to several extensions and spinoffs. In the US, the program has long been broadcast on linear channel Logo (2009-2016), and has then moved to VH1 (2017-), which is part of the same company, Viacom. -
Are They Family?: Queer Parents and Queer Pasts In
ARE THEY FAMILY?: QUEER PARENTS AND QUEER PASTS IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN CULTURE BY MICHAEL SHETINA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2019 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Siobhan Somerville, Chair Professor Chantal Nadeau Associate Professor Julie Turnock Associate Professor Richard T. Rodríguez, University of California, Riverside ABSTRACT The early twenty-first century saw a marked increase in depictions of LGBTQ people and communities in American popular culture occurring alongside political activism that culminated in the repeal of the Pentagon's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy (2010) and the Supreme Court's overturning of same-sex marriage bans in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015). Even as these events fueled a triumphant progressive narrative in which social and political representation moved LGBTQ people into a better future, a significant strain of LGBTQ-focused popular culture drew its attention to the past. My dissertation, Are They Family?: Queer Parents and Queer Pasts in Popular Culture, examines how American film, television, and literature between 2005 and 2016 construct relationships among LGBTQ people across recent history in generational and familial terms. These works queer the concept of the family by deploying parents and parental figures to examine the role of families in the transmission of queer knowledges, practices, and identities, countering notions of families as mere precursors to queer identity—“families of origin”—or as the agential creations of out LGBTQ people—“families of choice.” These works demonstrate how such dichotomous conceptions of family limit the people, experiences, and forms of affect that are legible within the category of LGBTQ history. -

“I'm a Mountain Biking Vampire Witch from the Future!” Queer Decolonial
“I’m a Mountain Biking Vampire Witch From the Future!” Queer Decolonial Killjoys in Queer Studies and Politics by Charlotte Theresa Hoelke A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate in Philosophy in Canadian Studies Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2018, Charlotte Theresa Hoelke Hoelke, 1 Abstract This thesis asks how queer scholarship and politics will maintain a radically queer critical edge, specifically an unsettling, decolonial approach that does not take for granted the continuance of queer liberal and settler colonial structures. A longstanding debate in queer studies and politics is the tension between queer assimilation vs queer radicalism. However, even the radical unsettling approaches that discuss radical queer futurity (Muñoz, and Edelman) often do not centre the important context of settler colonialism, even while critiquing normativity and imagining better futures. So how do we locate examples of imaginings of queer decolonial futures: ones that account for settler colonialism? To find out, I chose to examine selected performances in specific popular “silly archives of unhappy feelings,” and found complex examples of uncanny, at times monstrous, performances by artists (Trixie Mattel, Katya Zamoldchikova and Miss Chief Eagle Testickle). These artists, I argue, exemplify and embody the characteristics of what I call “Queer Decolonial Killjoys” (QDKs). Building on Ahmed’s concepts of “Feminist Killjoys,” and “Unhappy Queers,” I demonstrate that the artists I discuss not only unsettle gendered, sexualized, and racialized norms (à la Ahmed), but that they also act as Decolonial Killjoys because they use complex performative strategies to also critique settler colonialism and queer liberalism. -

UNIVERSITY of CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reading Rupaul's Drag Race
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reading RuPaul’s Drag Race: Queer Memory, Camp Capitalism, and RuPaul’s Drag Empire A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Carl Douglas Schottmiller 2017 © Copyright by Carl Douglas Schottmiller 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reading RuPaul’s Drag Race: Queer Memory, Camp Capitalism, and RuPaul’s Drag Empire by Carl Douglas Schottmiller Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor David H Gere, Chair This dissertation undertakes an interdisciplinary study of the competitive reality television show RuPaul’s Drag Race, drawing upon approaches and perspectives from LGBT Studies, Media Studies, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, and Performance Studies. Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise. ii While most scholars analyze RuPaul’s Drag Race primarily through content analysis of the aired television episodes, this dissertation combines content analysis with ethnography in order to connect the television show to tangible practices among fans and effects within drag communities. -
A Treatise on the Language, Poetry, and Music of the Highland Clans
O/v^. ^57. James Norman Methven St. Martin's. THE LANGUAGE, POETRY, AND MUSIC HIGHLAND CLANS. D. R. COLLIE AND SON, PRINTERS, EDINBORGH. : A TREATISE LANGUAGE, POETRY, AND MUSIC HIGHLAND CLANS : ILLUSTRATIVE TRADITIONS AND ANECDOTES, AND NUMEROUS ANCIENT HIGHLAND AIRS. BY DONALD CAMPBELL, Esq. LATE LIKUT. HTTH KEGIMENT. EDINBURGH D. R. COLLIE à SON, 19 ST DAVID STREET. 1862. PREFACE. The religious and civil institutions, and the state of society among the patriarchal or Highland Clans, have been so misunderstood and misrepresented, as to have made on the English-speaking public the impression that these Clans were in a state of lawless barbarity at the dawn of authentic history, and continued in that condition until a period within the memory of men still living. Several untoward circumstances, chiefly resulting from the translation of Ossian's poems, have occurred to confirm this impression. One learned and talented Englishmen, with a direct referenr Lo these poems, contended that such ideas and feelings could not be expressed in the rude gibberish of a barbarous people ; and several English-speaking Lowlanders and Highlanders, taking up this view of the subject, and having the same conviction as to the rude uncultivated character of the language, maintained that the Highland Clans had no poetry, and could not have had any poetry, excepting that which had been recently forged for them in English, by writers of so unscrupulous a character as to father their patched-up plagiarisms on mythic bards, known only to the vulgar lore of a people who had never emerged from a state of lawless barbarity. -

Meghan Burns (101078727) RELI 2200: Judaism Professor Deidre Butler Saturday June 27, 2020 Script- Final Project: Podcast on Drag and Judaism Intro Music: This is How We Jew It by Detox1 Detox, Miz Cracker, Sasha Velour, Jinkx Monsoon, Alexis Michelle: if you’re familiar with these names, you might be a superfan of Rupaul's Drag Race like me. These are some of my favourite queens from the popular drag competition show, that has been making waves in LGBTQ+ community and mainstream culture for the past 12 years. These queens also have another thing in common: they’re all Jewish, and use their Jewishness as part of their drag (case in point: the song you just heard is “This is How We Jew it” by Detox, and on Season 10, Miz Cracker coined her catchphrase, “Shabbat Shablam!”2) Jewishness in American drag seems to be pretty accepted, but how did we get here? And is this the same around the world? My name is Meghan Burns and today on our podcast we’ll be taking a deep dive into the history of drag and Judaism. Challah Ad- This episode is sponsored by Challah- the only bread you ever need! Pick some up before Saturday at your local Kosher market. Chapter 1: History and Context of Drag in Judaism (Biblical and Talmudic texts) For those who aren’t familiar with the art of drag, drag is an art form that bends gender binaries, allowing for the fluidity of expression in ways that wouldn’t traditionally be allowed within rigid gender roles. -

Gallamore A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2012 ABSTRACT INTRODUCING THE INCOMPARABLE HILDEGARDE: THE SEXUALITY, STYLE, AND IMAGE OF A FORGOTTEN CULTURAL ICON Monica S. Gallamore Marquette University, 2012 This study is an historical biography of the popular American entertainer from the nineteen-forties and fifties named Hildegarde. Known by her first name long before such designations became commonplace, Hildegarde achieved such celebrity status that she influenced women‘s fashions and promoted a number of consumer products. She even had her own signature Revlon lipstick and nail polish called ―Hildegarde Rose.‖ Hildegarde‘s career spanned for more than seventy years, beginning as a pianist for silent movies in Milwaukee and eventually becoming the darling of nightclubs and supper clubs. Unfortunately, few people remember this entertainer or her influence. She has been overlooked by historians as a cultural influence and a groundbreaking performer even though in 1945 she was the most popular songstress in the nation. Hildegarde is unique because she did not fit into the accepted archetype of women during her heyday.
