KEEPING BUSY DURING LOCKDOWN

e all had last minute checklists and grand ideas for the lockdown Wwhen it began... but nothing could have fully prepared us for the weeks that have followed.

Never before has there been such a global effort to apply technology to work from home as we have seen with the coronavirus. We have been asked to keep our social distance, while trying to maintain our households, a balanced lifestyle and our sanity.

This certainly required more careful planning than I originally envisaged. Firstly, I have been thankful for the time spent at home with my family, but it has also been a challenge to manage my time and to find creative ways to keep everyone stimulated. We have kept ourselves busy with creative arts, trying new recipes, gardening, playing games in the garden, building puzzles, reading, catching up on some television shows and anything we could think of around the house.

Going nowhere slowly

Others have also suggested some inspired activities such as: clearing out your wardrobe, reading a book/ magazine, doing crosswords/sudoku, designing a photo album, learning another language, planning a travel bucket list, learning to play a musical instrument and completing some DIY or woodwork tasks. I also hope you enjoyed our ten-day exercise challenge on the Silver Lakes Home Owners Facebook page, which was recorded by the McKenna Performance Academy.

Our Silver Lakes residents showed their joyful and creative sides. Thank you for sharing your photos with us! It has been fun and interesting to see what you have been doing! Whilst I am sure most of us are looking forward to our lives returning to some normality, even though nothing may ever be the same again, no one can deny that we are living in unique times that will be recorded in the annals of history!

Please remember that the Silver Lakes Cares group remains available during this time if you are frail and need assistance or someone to lean on. Stay safe and join us in believing that this too shall pass and great days are ahead!

Covid-19 Birding in your Garden by Albert Roos

n recent weeks we have all come to know Covid–19 intimately. It has Spotted Eagle Owl affected our lives forever. Our global economy will certainly feel the Ieffects of this pandemic and it will take some time for everything to return to normal... for some it will take longer than for others.

As devastating as it is and with the long-lasting effects in its wake, life still goes on. During the lockdown we cannot travel or go for our usual walks or runs, but we can go out into our own gardens. This has been a saving grace for me.

I spend as much time as I can outside in my yard with my daughter. As there are fewer cars around, we can hear many birds calling and see some of them fly about in the trees in our yard. I have managed to spot 52 species in two and half weeks of lockdown.

It would be foolish of me to think that I could see all 170 plus species of birds so far recorded at Silver Lakes from the confinement of my garden, but I can increase the list of species that visit my own garden.

Planting bird-friendly plants such as *Aloes, Watsonias, Lion’s Ears (Leonotis spp), Red-hot Pokers (Kniphofia spp) and Wachendorfias, will attract nectar feeding birds such as sunbirds. Sowing patches of mixed bird seed will create a fascinating response from local birds. Seed eaters also thrive on the seeds of ordinary daisies (such as the Euryops Daisy). To attract fruit eating birds such as loeries, plant fruit producing plants. Try the Tree Fuchsia (Halleria lucida), Dune Crow-berry (Grewia occidentalis) and White Stinkwood (Celtis africana).

20 MAY IS WORLD BEE DAY by Natasha Lyon

We simply cannot sustain our food resources without the crucial work of pollinators, of which honey bees are the most important. Please help our honey bees by saying NO to harmful pesticides. Some crops, including blueberries and cherries, are 90% dependent on honey bee pollination while almonds are entirely dependent on the honey bee. Sadly, our honey bees are dying off at an alarming rate. Loss of habitat, lack of foraging, diseases, alien bee invasions, and the overuse of pesticides are some of the causes for their sharp decline.

At a honey bee talk, a little girl asked me if it was possible for honey bees to die out entirely. Let me tell you a Hanyuan County story. In the south Sichuan province of China, Hanyuan is home to pear orchards which carpet the mountains down into the valleys. This region is entirely dependent on this crop. And it isn’t the honey bees they have to thank. In fact, the honey bees died out due to uncontrolled use of pesticides in the 1980s. They lost their entire bee population. Now in April each year,

REAL HONEST HONEY Honey is seasonal and, sadly, it is becoming one of the most adulterated food items in South Africa. Cheap imports and creative versions of honey are on the increase and it is very difficult, if not impossible, to tell the difference between natural honey and man-made honey. Ethical beekeepers and honey bee farmers simply cannot compete with adulterated honey prices. So how do we address this? How do we support the honest, hard-working honey bee farmer and how do we know which is real honey?

I have spent a long time trying to address these questions with a value proposition which delivers premium raw honey, protects our honey bees through education and support our beekeepers by paying fair prices for real honey. The best guidance I can give is that you need to know where your honey comes from. Ask questions about the honey extraction process, apiary location, type of foraging and who the beekeeper is. Be prepared to pay a fair price for real honey. Keep in mind that no two honeys are the same. The nutritional properties of honey along with the colour, aroma and flavour is determined by the type of foraging, weather patterns and the type and quality of soil in which the flowering plants and trees grow. • Support our beekeepers by paying fair you have the mandate to select and pay prices for honest, real honey. Building resilience in children despite COVID-19 by Dr Ilse Ruane

he most important factor in building resilience in children and helping them Tprocess situations is to have loving adults who are there for them and who are physically, emotionally and spiritually available. Children rely on us to figure out how to interpret events. Unfortunately, we cannot protect our children from the consequences of COVID-19. However, the way we respond and the support we offer can help buffer the consequences. This can also make it easier for our children to bounce back. They listen to our words, notice our stress levels and watch what we do. Feeling secure and connected to parents, family members, teachers, friends or community is the greatest protection children have. It builds their resilience now and well into the future. With a support system in place, you will be able to keep negative beliefs to a minimum, calm fears, restore ideas around ‘normal’ and pull together as a family so that we all may bounce back, and even grow from the challenges we are facing.

So, what can we, as parents, do to help them? afraid.
