Kashgar: Lost in the Mists of Time—A Photo Essay
Oh call back yesterday, bid time return. — Shakespeare, Richard II, 3.2 Every student of the Silk Roads has heard of Kashgar, one of the key nodes in the network of routes crisscrossing Afro-Eurasia. A city with an important if, surprisingly, understudied history, Kashgar has also featured in alarming news reports of recent years. The very fabric of its physical remains and the lives of its inhabitants have been rapidly and inexorably altered by government policies that have provoked moral outrage from those who deeply care about the people who have so been affected. That recent history has been amply documented, often with dramatic photographic evidence of the changes. My purpose is not to engage in the same discussion, even if my photos may be related to it. The brief essay at the end here will provide some references and also indicate my indebtedness to colleagues who have generously answered specific questions or provided a few of the images. E-mail:1 [email protected] Received: 11.03.2020 Revised: 12.04.2020 Accepted: 28.05.2020 ABSTRACT: Because of the importance of studying the history of relations of the Qing dynasty with the peoples of Central Asia in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the existence of the phenomenon referred to as the “Zunghar heritage”, it is appropriate to study its background in the defensive systems of Zunghar and Qing Empires in Central Asia. There is a recent tendency to mention the so-called “Zunghar legacy” in the works of modern historiography on the history of Central Eurasia. It means like as a combination of political traditions, administrative and economic activities and methods of contacts, which were adopted by the Qing authorities from the Oirats. The researchers, actively using Manchu sources, explain the nature of the using of this “legacy” by the Qing through the model of “North Asian policy”, the “Qing world order” or the “Central Eurasian tradition”. In this regard and according to the logic, a comparative method and an attempt to make clear the genesis of a phenomenon, which had related to the Qing-Oirat relations before the contact of the Qing with Central Asia, west of Xinjiang, should also cause some interest in Qing and Central Asian studies, especially in the area of sedentary constructions of Zunghars and defensive system, named “Karul” or “Karun”. -

Uyghur (also spelled Uighur, Uygur) means "unity" or "alliance”, it is pronounced [ÖY-ghur or Uigu:R]. They are a Turkic ethnic people. Pre-history Uyghurs: the name Uyghur (Uighur) appeared for the first time 17,000 years ago in the pre-historic period with The Great Uighur Empire in the Continent of Mu during the Tertiary Era Belonged to the Continent of Mu1. James Churchward describes in his book “the great Uighur Empire” as the largest and most important colonial empire belonging to Mu, the Empire of the Sun. "Next to Mu herself, the Uighur Empire was the largest empire the world has ever known." . Uyghur history can be divided into four distinct phases: Pre-Imperial (300 BC – AD 630), Imperial (AD 630–840), Idiqut (AD 840–1200), and Mongol (AD 1209–1600), with perhaps a fifth modern phase running from the death of the Silk Road in AD 1600 until the present. Most people know that Tibet was occupied by China in 1950s but how many know that the Uyghurs' country East Turkistan (Xinjiang 'new frontier' in Chinese) was occupied by China in 1949? 1 These theories are explained in Hans Stefan Santesson’s published book in 1970 entitled “Understanding Mu: The Uighurs” Chapter 10 pages 96-100. Hans Stefan Santesson has proved these theories according to James Churchward’s book “Lost Continent of Mu Motherland of Man” (1926) Chapter 5 pages 105-110. -

„Analecta Cracoviensia” 49 (2017), s. 249–281 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15633/acr.2415 Krzysztof Kościelniak Jagiellonian University, Kraków The Afaq (Apak) Khoja Mausoleum in Kashgar as a symbol of Uyghur’s identity (ca 1640–2015) Located in Haohan Village (浩罕村) in the north-eastern suburb of Kashgar, ئاپاق) the Khoja Apak1 Mausoleum called by Uyghurs Apakh Khoğa Mazār and by Chinese Abahejia mazha (阿巴和加麻札) is the holiest (خوجا مازار Muslim site in Xinjiang. The Apak Khoja Mausoleum is a complex in the honour of the Khoja family who belonged to the Muslim group Naqshbandi Sufi. This family of religious leaders originally from Bukhara not only ground- ed Islam in the East Turkestan but also influenced Uyghour’s cultural and political identity by several different factors such as self-perception of ethnic- ity and locality. This phenomenon developed the basis of Islamic-grounded political regimes, organizations, and initiatives of Naqshbandi Sufism. The tradition of Apak Khoja is a specific „historical reservoir” playing an important role in discussion about Uyghur’s identity. The reputation of Apak in the past and the present depended on many political and religious contexts. Starting with the famous relations of Russian (Kazakh) traveller Shoqan Shy- nghysuly Walikhanov (1835–1865; kazakh: Шоқан Шыңғысұлы Уәлиханұлы) 1 Since the Persian language in Central Asia was a kind of lingua franca it is worth mentioning is relatively popular (آفاق خواجه and خواجه آرامگاه Afāq from) آفاق that Persian version of Apak’s name is much less popular beyond the (ئاپاق خوجا) in European literature. Raleigh © 2019 Nurlan Kabdylkhak ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Nurlan Kabdylkhak: Russian Empire-Building and the Kazakh Kinship System: The Chala- Qazaqs of the Kazakh steppe (under the direction of Eren Tasar) This thesis examines the phenomenon of Chala-Qazaqs: groups of mixed ethnic origin who lived in the Kazakh steppe. Chala-Qazaqs, or “half-Kazakhs,” emerged as a result of the rigid kinship system and patrilineal succession adopted by the steppe nomads. Since Kazakhs inherited their tribal identities from their fathers, they placed the progeny of Kazakh mothers and non-Kazakh fathers in the hybrid category of Chala-Qazaqs. Chala-Qazaq could serve as a transitional status on the way to becoming “fully” Kazakh. This “Kazakhification” was evinced by their incorporation into Kazakh tribal genealogies. This paper reveals that this process stopped in the nineteenth century due to the transformation of the Kazakh kinship system and the emergence of Chala-Qazaqs as a distinct social category – two inter-related shifts connected to Russian imperial expansion. Chala-Qazaqs present a fascinating case that exposes ethnic processes in pre-colonial and colonial settings and demonstrate the agency of Muslims under the Russian rule. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION ....................................................................................................................
