Yorman Rodriguez & Tyler Duffey Honored As FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 29, 2015 YORMAN RODRIGUEZ & TYLER DUFFEY HONORED AS INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK The International League announced today that Louisville outfielder Yorman Rodriguez and Rochester pitcher Tyler Duffey have been named the League’s Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 22‐28. Duffeyʹs award is the League‐best fourth weekly honor for the Red Wings this season, as he follows fellow pitchers Pat Dean (April 13‐19) and Tommy Milone (May 11‐17 & May 18‐24). Rodriguez becomes the first member of the Bats to be so honored this season, and the first Batter of the Week from Louisville since Cody Puckett in 2012 (June 18‐24). YORMAN RODRIGUEZ, Louisville Bats IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Bats outfielder Yorman Rodriguez hit .444 over the past seven days and led the International League with 12 hits and 12 RBI. Rodriguez produced three different three‐hit games this week, including a five‐RBI performance in Louisvilleʹs 15‐2 win Thursday at Scranton/Wilkes‐Barre and a four‐RBI effort in Fridayʹs 11‐5 win at Lehigh Valley. This season Rodriguez leads the Bats club in several offensive categories, including hits, doubles, homers, RBI, and runs scored. 22‐year‐old Yorman Rodriguez is in his first season at the Triple‐A level. His professional career began in 2009 after signing with the Reds as a non‐drafted free agent. Last season he was an All‐Star in the Double‐A Southern League before making his Major League debut in September for Cincinnati. Rodriguez is a native of Ocumare de la Costa, Venezuela. He went 7.1 frames in Rochesterʹs 3‐2 win last Monday at Pawtucket, allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out six. Then back home on Sunday in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Charlotte, Duffey delivered his first career complete game shutout, scattering four hits with one walk over 7.0 innings in a 1‐0 Red Wings victory. After his mid‐May promotion from Double‐A Chattanooga, Duffey lost his first four starts with the Red Wings, but heʹs now gone three straight starts without allowing an earned run to improve his record to 3‐4. 24‐year‐old Tyler Duffey is in his fourth season as a professional pitcher. He was selected by Minnesota in the 5th round of the 2012 draft out of Rice University. He led the Twins farm system with 13 wins in 2014 between Class‐A Ft. Myers, Double‐A New Britain, and Rochester. Duffey is a native of Houston, Texas. • Applying Matching Equation to Pitch Selection in Major League Baseball
APPLYING MATCHING EQUATION TO PITCH SELECTION IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL __________________________________________________________________ A Thesis Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Masters of Education in Applied Behavior Analysis __________________________________________________________________ David Dragone August 2018 Examining Committee Members: Donald Hantula, Ph.D., Thesis Advisor, Department of Psychology Matt Tincani, Ph. D., BCBA-D, Department of Education Amanda Guld Fisher, Ph. D., BCBA-D, College of Education ABSTRACT This study applied the generalized matching equation (GME) to pitch selection in MLB during the 2016 regular season. The GME was used to evaluate the pitch selection of 21 groups of pitchers as well as 144 individual pitchers. The GME described pitch selection well for four of the 21 pitching groups and 32 of the 144 individual pitchers. Of the remaining groups and individual pitchers, behavior may be explained by rule following behavior or be impacted by distant reinforcers such as salary. All 21 groups demonstrated a bias for fastballs as well as 119 of the 144 individual pitchers. The results extend the use of the GME to natural contexts and suggest an alternative view to evaluating pitchers. KEYWORDS: general matching theory, general matching equation, sports, baseball, reinforcement ii DEDICATION This study is dedicated to the countless number of people who have supported me throughout the years both in this degree and professionally. Thank you, to my wife, Jen, and Children, Aurora and Rose, who gave me the motivation to keep working through this process and seeing it through to the end. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Dr.
