The 2020 floods has some remarkable characteristics in comparison with major floods in the recent past. It started earlier than usual (late June), it lasted more 60 days in some areas and, in Bahadurabad of Jamalpur, the Jamuna flowed at 20.79 m, 17cm above the last water level record set in 1988 according to Floods Forecasting Warning Centre (FFWC). According to the National Disaster Response Coordination Center (NDRCC), one (1) million households were waterlogged. The disruption of services hindered meeting basic needs and, people suffered from hunger, illness, thirst and filthiness. The NDRCC report informs that 5.5 million (highest at 4 August) people were directly affected and, that 1,059,295 households were inundated. Among them, 211,859 families were displaced, and 94,414 people were evacuated in 1,525 shelters. The Department of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) informs that 928,60 tube-wells and 100,223 latrines were damaged. -

The study analysed data from self-reported surveys from 133 members of the sub-district level disaster management committee and government officials working with DRR. Employing the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method, we find that political economy factors explain 68% of the variance in funding allocations. We also show that four categories of political economy factors—power and authority, interest and incentives, institutions, and values and ideas—are significantly influential over the distribution of DRR funding across subdistricts of Bangladesh. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Questions 1. Are Hindus a minority religion in Bangladesh? 2. How are religious minorities, notably Hindus, treated in Bangladesh? 3. Is the Awami League traditionally supported by the Hindus in Bangladesh? 4. Are Hindu supporters of the Awami League discriminated against and if so, by whom? 5. Are there parts of Bangladesh where Hindus enjoy more safety? 6. Is Bengali the language of Bangladeshis? RESPONSE 1. Are Hindus a minority religion in Bangladesh? Hindus constitute approximately 10 percent of the population in Bangladesh making them a religious minority. Sunni Muslims constitute around 88 percent of the population and Buddhists and Christians make up the remainder of the religious minorities. The Hindu minority in Bangladesh has progressively diminished since partition in 1947 from approximately 25 percent of the population to its current 10 percent (US Department of State 2006, International Religious Freedom Report for 2006 – Bangladesh, 15 September – Attachment 1). 2. How are religious minorities, notably Hindus, treated in Bangladesh? In general, minorities in Bangladesh have been consistently mistreated by the government and Islamist extremists. Specific discrimination against the Hindu minority intensified immediately following the 2001 national elections when the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gained victory with its four-party coalition government, including two Islamic parties. -

Atiqur Rahman* Department of Botany, University of Chittagong Chittagong 4331, Bangladesh *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract The study aimed at inventorying of threatened plant species of Bangladesh to determine their status of occurrence for emphasizing the setting-up of national conservation strategies and sustainable management. Complete inventory of two families, the Apocynaceae and Vitaceae, has been made and recognized 28 threatened species facing environmental threats, and need sustainable conservation management. The study was based on long-term field investigation, survey of relevant floristic literature and examination of herbarium specimens. An enumeration of threatened taxa is prepared with updated field data on conservation status to include into Red Data Book of Bangladesh. Introduction Global biodiversity is depleting at an alarming rate due to human interferences and environmental degradation, causing high risk of extinction. Human impact on nature has reached at such a high proportion that the world is today witnessing an unprecedented rate of species loss. Many more species are disappearing from the nature before their discovery and determination. Bangladesh Rice J. 21 (2) : 217-235, 2017 Cropping Patterns in Mymensingh Region: Diversity, Constraint and Potential A Khatun1*, N Parvin1, M M R Dewan2 and A Saha1 ABSTRACT A consistent and comprehensive database on cropping pattern, cropping intensity and crop diversity of a particular area is the prime importance for guiding policy makers, researchers, extentionists and development agencies for the future research and development planning. The study was carried out all the upazilas of Mymensingh region during 2015-16 using pre-designed and pre-tested semi- structured questionnaire with a view to document the existing cropping pattern, crop diversity and cropping intensity. The most dominant cropping pattern Boro−Fallow−T. Aman occupied about one- half of net cropped area (NCA) of the region distributed to 46 out of 47 upazilas. Single Boro cropping pattern ranked the second position which covered 23% of NCA distributed in 45 upazilas. A total of 129 cropping patterns were identified in the whole area of Mymensingh region under this investigation. The highest number of (30) cropping patterns were identified in Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj and the lowest was (10) in Sreebardi of Sherpur. The lowest crop diversity index (CDI) was reported (0.111) in Mithamoin of Kishoreganj followed by 0.114 at Khaliajuri in Netrokona. The highest value of CDI was observed 0.933 at Dewanganj in Jamalpur followed by 0.920 at Bhairab in Kishoreganj. The range of cropping intensity values was recorded 101-249%. The maximum value was for Hossainpur and minimum for Itna and Mithamoin in Kishoreganj. At a glance the calculated CDI of Mymensingh region was 0.840 and the average cropping intensity was 187%. -

Banik 1Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh 2Industrial and Production Engineering Department, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh Received 13 July 2005; revised 20 August 2005; accepted 25 November 2005 ABSTRACT A study of the water quality conditions of Sylhet city of Bangladesh and its restaurants was carried out to assess risks to human health. The investigation was based on questionnaire survey of restaurants and laboratory tests on water samples obtained from the restaurants, tube wells of the city and Surma River the two main sources of water supply to the city. The test parameters were dissolved oxygen; conductance, hardness, pH, temperature, turbidity, essential and trace elements, dissolved and suspended solids and coliform bacteria. The quality of sanitary facilities and handling of food in the restaurants were also examined. It was found that the drinking water of each restaurant was contaminated with fecal coliforms and 25% restaurants had unsafe levels of iron in the water supply. Improper solid waste dumping was found as one of the reasons of groundwater pollution. Statistical analysis based on Pearson’s correlation coefficient revealed significant correlation between the extent of groundwater pollution and dumping of solid waste effluents in the immediate vicinity of ground water (tube wells). It was observed that 75.69% (coefficient of determination r2= 0.7569) variation in the value of groundwater near the dumping place showed association with variation in the value of water quality within the dumping place. -

Towfiqul Islama* aDepartment of Disaster Management, Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur 5400, Bangladesh Received: 13 June 2019 / Revised: 16 October 2019 / Accepted: 12 January 2020 Abstract Drought risk has become a major threat for sustaining food security in Bangladesh; the particularly northwestern region of Bangladesh. The objective of the study is to assess drought disaster risk on Boro paddy cultivated areas of northwestern Bangladesh using drought disaster risk index (DDRI) model. The sensitivity of Boro paddy to droughts during crop-growing seasons and irrigation recoverability were employed to reflect vulnerability condition. Moreover, the threshold level of the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) was applied to evaluate the drought hazard on Boro paddy cultivated areas in the northwestern region of Bangladesh. The probability density function (PDF) was used to show the threshold level of drought hazard. The results show that drought hazard is comparatively severe in Ishardi area compared to other northwestern regions of Bangladesh. The drought disaster risk is higher in Ishardi and Rajshahi areas than Rangpur and Dinajpur areas. Although Ishardi area is more prone to high drought risk, at the same time, the recoverability rate is also quicker than any other areas. The relationship between Boro rice yield rates and drought disaster risk is insignificant. -

In the reservoir condition, water saturation increases as gas production rise. The fluid properties of the four individual gas zones of this reservoir at the present condition and at the gas depleted condition should be addressed with proper prediction. In this paper, we characterize the total reservoir with special emphasis on Upper Gas Zone and New Gas Zone I which are compared with other two gas zones (New Gas Zone III and New Gas Zone II) representing some modeling results (has done before by these authors) which evidences that the pore fluids have a significant effect on the acoustic impedance and the Poisson’s ratio of the reservoir rock which is directly correlated with seismic amplitudes at constant pressure with Batzle-Wang model and Gassman-Boit models.
