Sarah Richin, Tasting Room Manager How long have you worked here?: December 2018 - present Where are you from: Originally from Pennsylvania, but I’ve called Virginia my home for the past 6 years until my husband and I decided to relocate to the PNW! We have lived in Portland for the past 2 years, but have finally made the move over the bridge to Vancouver. First love of wine: My love of wine came way after my first wine. I used to swear by the sweet stuff (yup, Moscato and White Zin I’m looking at you). When I moved back to Charlottesville, I was working at a very stressful job and spent my free time exploring the wineries in the Monticello AVA. I decided to make it my life goal to visit all of the wineries in Virginia (I’ve only been to about 50 of the 230+). I fell in love with Bordeaux blends immediately and have been smitten ever since. Since then I moved across the country for the wine industry, started a blog and instagram account (@sipswithsare) and have been studying for my WSET. I currently have my WSET Level 2, next stop: level 3! Favorite current wine at Burnt bridge: The 2016 Malbec is my current favorite. I’ve also fallen in love with the vintage 2013 Couve Cuvee and of course, the Cabernet Francs. Favorite wine of all time from Burnt Bridge: I still need to try more vintage wines, but I LOVED the 2010 Merlot and of course, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. Favorite wine varietal: As I mentioned before I love Bordeauxs, especially Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, but recently I’ve been getting into Carménère. Favorite part of working at BB: The community above all else! This isn’t your normal tasting room, this is a place where people can come in and make new friends immediately, while, of course, enjoying a delicious glass of wine. Favorite event we put on: I love Happy Hour Thursdays at Burnt Bridge, and Thursday’s in general! So many regulars come in on Thursday and we catch up on our weeks. Favorite Food: Nachos, charcuterie plates (any and all kinds!!) french fries and sushi! I love living near Portland where I get to live out my foodie dreams. Fun fact/something we don't know about you: When I lived in Charlottesville, my friend and I started our own business! We made dessert hummus (yes! From chickpeas) and it was called ChickPeace. .

2018 Monticello Cup Gold Medals Announced Sarah
Press Release – Monday, April 30 Immediate Release 2018 Monticello Cup Gold Medals Announced Contact: Sarah Craun, Monticello Wine Trail [email protected] / 434.806.6991 Charlottesville , VA – Twenty-two wineries from the Monticello Wine Trail (MWT) competed in the 2018 Monticello Cup Wine Competition, a friendly competition among wineries in the Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA). This year’s competition was coordinated by the Virginia Wine & Spirits Academy, and all entered wines contained a minimum of 85% fruit from the Monticello AVA and were produced by a member of the MWT. This year 13 gold medals were awarded out of 58 entries. From these, the Top 3 White, Top 3 Red and overall Monticello Cup Winner, for the highest-ranking wine, will be announced live at the Monticello Cup Awards (MCA) on Monday, May 7, 6pm at the Jefferson Theater. The MCA will also serve as the official start to the 2018 Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Festival. Tickets for the award ceremony are available to the public at www.jeffersontheater.com. We collect data from a laboratory experiment and estimate consumer response to information that ties U.S. wine regions to French wine regions. Results show that reputation tapping is significant for wines from emerging regions and important among subjects that are relatively knowledgeable about wine. Our findings also suggest that full protection of geographical indications would require the regulation of activities beyond those by individual firms. 2013 Tannat pH: 3.69 Acid: 5.4 g/l Alcohol 14.7% Grape Sources 100% Tannat sourced from 100% Virginia vineyards as follows: 60%William’s Gap Vineyard, 20% Honah Lee Vineyard and 20% Benevino Vineyard. Harvest Dates October 1 & 6, 2013. Appellation Loudoun County, Monticello AVA and Shenandoah Valley AVA. Winemaking Data Grapes were harvested early, transported and refrigerated on site at 40° F overnight. The next day the grapes were destemmed into fermentation bins. The bins were allowed to cold soak for three days and then immediately heated in a hot room to allow us to inoculate the must with BM 45 yeast. Fermentation lasted 13 days and the Tannat stayed on it’s skin for 4 more days of post fermentation maceration then was pressed off to settle for two days until it was moved into barrels. The wine aged 22 months in one year American oak from Magreñan cooperage and new French oak from Saury cooperage. 2013 Tannat was bottled on August 17, 2015. Winemaker Notes Tannat is a lesser-known variety from the Madiran region in southwest France and more recently in Uruguay. This 2013 vintage is another hearty and a tannic version with abundant aromas of ripe berries, tobacco and smoke. The ﬂavors blackberries and dark chocolate abound on the palate leading the way to great structure and a full body that ﬁnishes really smooth with a spicy note. Vintage Notes The 2013 vintage was considered to be a solid but average vintage for Virginia. A cooler start to the beginning of the season led to a later bud break than normal.
