Coblentz Papers are a gift to The Bancroft Library of Mrs. Edmond D. Coblentz, as a memorial to her late husband whose entire professional life was identified with the Hearst Newspapers. This collection of over 10,000 pieces is of primary importance to the study of American journalism by virtue of the extensive correspondence between Mr. Coblentz and Mr. Hearst which it contains. There is also a wide correspondence between Mr. Coblentz and other officials of the Hearst Organization which, like the Coblentz-Hearst group, afford an intimate insight into the personality of Mr. Hearst and reveal much of how he managed his extensive newspaper empire. The social correspondence in the collection serves to define Mr. Coblentz' position and influence with respect to many of the nation's leaders, social, business and political. The papers are divided into Letters Sent by Mr. Coblentz (Outgoing), and Letters Received by Mr. Coblentz (Incoming). Outgoing communications are arranged chronologically; Incoming communications are arranged by author, and within author, by date. Calendars of both Outgoing and Incoming have been prepared. That for Letters Sent lists the addressees alphabetically, and each such name is followed by the dates of the letters (or telegrams) sent, the number sent and the total number of pieces. The calendar of Letters Received lists the authors, the dates of letters sent (and the number) as well as the number of pieces. Included in this list are the names of many organizations, members of which addressed Mr. Coblentz (and others). These names are cross-referenced to the individual writers. Included also in this calendar are the names of persons other than Mr. Coblentz to whom communications were sent, and the originals or copies of which are found in the collection. Such persons are noted as Recipient. In addition to the Correspondence files, each group is followed by miscellaneous materials of special interest and importance. These may be identified from the accompanying Key.
