The City of Glen Cove’s annual July 4th festivities celebrates great traditions with free concerts, fireworks and a children’s bike parade. “Glen Cove is the place to be for July 4th weekend as we have the best of everything for our residents - fireworks, a classic child’s bike parade, concerts downtown and in the park, beautiful beaches and picnic grounds,” said Mayor Spinello. Coordinated by the Glen Cove Youth Bureau, the annual July 4th Children’s Bike Parade has become a morning holiday tradition for kids of all ages and their families. Children take bikes, scooters, wagons, strollers and battery- powered vehicles and roll down the streets of downtown Glen Cove to the Village Square with their spirited energy and patriotism in full view. The parade starts at 10:00 a.m. but children are asked to arrive at the Robert M. Finley Middle School at 9:30 a.m. to decorate their bikes/wagons etc. for a bike decorating contest. For the bike contest, one winner will be selected in three categories - Most Patriotic, Most Original and Best Group - with a special prize for each winner. photo by Peter M. GWL art teacher, Mrs. Moran, asked her students what the difference between something Symmetrical and Asymmetrical was? In groups of two or three, the students were then asked to create a structure out of wood pieces that were either symmetrical or asymmetrical. Finding the balance in the process was difficult for some, but allowed for team work among the groups.

The process allowed for students to ask a number of important questions including What effects balance?, How does the position of weight effect balance? Do objects of equal volume or size weigh the same? Students enjoyed discussing these questions and putting them to the test in their structures.

Physical education teacher, Mr. Carpenter, explained to his students the difference between static and dynamic balance. Static balance was defined as being able to maintain equilibrium when stationary, while dynamic balance maintains equilibrium while moving. He explained the impact balance has on physical activity, using our eyes, ears, and body sense to retain our balance. It helps you move, think, and become happy and strong!

Students practiced different yoga poses, including breath control, meditation, and being able to keep themselves level- headed and achieve balance. Rotary Club of Glen Cove to Host 21st Annual Golf Outing

By: Mary Grace Donaldson

GLEN COVE, N.Y. – The Rotary Club of Glen Cove will hold its annual flagship fundraiser, the club’s 21st Golf Outing, on July 25, 2016. The golf portion of the day will be held at the Glen Cove Golf Course on Lattingtown Road. Sign-in begins at 11:00 A.M, with a barbecue prior to the 1 P.M. tee-off Dinner and awards will immediately follow at the Metropolitan in Glen Cove.

A new feature of this year’s outing is an instructional golf option, which, upon request, invites novice golfers to participate in the outing with instruction from a golf pro.

The club will honor two former Rotarians, Nicholas DiLeo and Peter Patrissi. Both honorees are being recognized together for the third consecutive year. DiLeo was a member of the Glen Cove club prior to his passing in 2014.

Proceeds from the outing directly benefit the Glen Cove club’s winter project, Dress-A- Child. Members of the club accompany area children, who are in need of winter coats and accessories, on a shopping trip to Target each November. The children leave with bags filled with winter weather clothes. The club participates in several service projects throughout the year.

The event team is still seeking golfers and tee sponsorships. For additional information, golfer registration, dinner only reservations or sponsorship, please contact event chair Martin Wertheim at (516) 671-0427.
