DNA tests are being carried out on a human foot, a boot and a sock discovered in the Wicklow Mountains on Saturday believed to be that of 19 year-old McIlhone, who vanished from west Belfast in 1981. They are trying to identify the complex genetic code of the partial remains which will be sent to a forensic science laboratory in England where the special Disappeared database is housed. If it matches with samples already taken from Mr McIlhone’s family it will positively identify the remains as that of the missing teenager and end decades of misery and uncertainty for his relatives. It will also spark fresh hopes for other families who have suffered the same agony.

As part of the centenary celebrations for International Women’s Day 2011 we pioneered a woman’s bus tour and walking tour of notable sites related to women and we renamed streets to honour women who had made notable contributions to their communities. We are extremely grateful to Nora Quigley and Lynda Walker for their work in helping to develop the material for the tour. The Women’s Resource and Development Agency and the Women’sTec subsequently obtained funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to train women as tour guides and to produce this accompanying booklet to provide information on women’s historical heritage. We would like to thank Angela Lavin and the Heritage Lottery Fund for their generous support for this project. We trust that the information in this booklet provides some idea of the rich and varied contribution so many women have made to the development of Belfast.

Applying economic theories of competition to the production of violence by terrorist or other VPOs yields considerable insight into their strategic behavior. Subversive groups cannot survive and continue to operate without a reservoir of political support, both active and passive, within the constituent base they claim to represent. These constituents exchange their support for the groups‘ violence when it is perceived to advance a preferred political agenda. However, violence also generates opposition from those constituents who perceive violence to be misguided, counter-productive or illegitimate. VPOs seek to maintain or increase their power within the constituent community by choosing the type and amount of violence that maximizes support and minimizes opposition. As such, VPOs are subject to the same forces of supply, demand and competition as firms in a market. Indeed, a qualitative time-series analysis of Republican groups in Northern Ireland finds typical market strategies employed, including attempts at product branding, productive outbidding, and reductions in violence by monopolistic groups.
