Cotswold Market Town of Moreton-in-Marsh

Moreton-in-Marsh is supposed to have connections with famous author J.R.R Tolkien who based The Prancing Pony Inn from Lord of the Rings on one of Moreton’s locals, The Bell Inn. Moreton-in-Marsh is positioned on ancient Roman road called the Fosse Way in the north Cotswolds. The town originally had a coaching station which was eventually replaced with a local train station now with a direct link from London Paddington. The town was originally developed in the thirteenth century with a large high street and has been known as a travelling town for around 1700 years. The high street is popular for its friendly and unique shops, hotels, medieval pubs, inns, restaurants, guesthouses and tea shops. The centrepiece of the town is the Redesdale Market Hall which was erected in 1887 in memory of the Earl of Redesdale. The Birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill

Blenheim Palace is one of the most breath-taking and stunning Cotswold attractions with regular tours at the home including the State Room Tours, the Churchill Exhibition and the Formal Gardens Walking Tours. There are also seasonal events such as the Christmas Craft Fair, Countryfile Live, Battle Proms and Blenheim Palace Flower Show. Set in 2000 acres of stunning park estate is Blenheim Palace which was originally given to the 1st Duke of Marlborough John Churchill by Queen Anne. Queen Anne rewarded John Churchill for his victory over France in the War of the Spanish Succession but at the time, the palace was in desperate need of restoration so she also gave him £240,000 to pay for the rebuild. Sir Winston Churchill was born at the palace in 1874 and he later proposed to his wife to be in the palace grounds. Sir Winston Churchill was buried with his family in the nearby village of Bladon when he died. Blenheim Palace is now still owned by the estate of the late John Spencer-Churchill who was the 11th Duke of Marlborough and the Cotswold family home has remained in the Churchill family for many decades.

The Village of Bibury

It’s no surprise that the village of Bibury was once called “the most beautiful village in The Cotswolds” by artist and designer William Morris. The picture-perfect and charming village of Bibury is on the River Coln in Gloucestershire, down a track from the A40. This pretty Cotswold village has a friendly village centre that surrounds the square next to St. Mary’s church which is a well-known and historical Saxon church boasting ornate medieval windows and unusual Norman carvings. The church was founded in the 8th century and has kept many of its original features. The famous cottages of Arlington row are one of the village’s most well-known attractions, a charming cluster of ancient cottages that date back to the 16th century. There are also various beauty spots in Bibury which were used for the backdrop of many blockbuster films, inclusive of Bridget Jones’s Diary and Stardust.
