Pac-12 battles in week four

Week four begins Pac-12 only competition with four meets between the eight Pac-12 schools to battle it out. On Friday, Feb. 1 No. 12 ARIZONA travels to WASHINGTON for a meet slated to begin at 7 p.m. PT. ARIZONA STATE also travels to No. 9 UTAH on Friday to begin competition at 7 p.m. MT. Saturday features No. 4 UCLA battling at No. 11 STANFORD at 4 p.m. PT. No. 14 OREGON STATE and No. 20 CALIFORNIA wrap up the weekend of competition on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. PT.

With the launch of the Pac-12 Networks, 10 women’s gymnas- tics meets will be televised on a national and regional basis. The Pac-12 Networks consists of one national and six regional networks devoted solely to the Pac-12. Pac-12 Announces Gymnastics weekly honors STANFORD’s Morgan Named Gymnast of the Week ARIZONA STATE’s Sundby Voted Specialist of the Week UCLA’s DeJesus Selected Freshman/Newcomer of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 women’s gymnastics weekly honors for the week of Jan. 21-27. STANFORD’s Ashley Morgan was named the Gymnast of the Week, ARIZONA STATE’s Natasha Sundby was voted Specialist of the Week, and UCLA’s Sophina DeJesus was selected as the Freshman/Newcomer of the week.

Senior captain, Morgan earned three individual titles to help Stanford claim first place over CALIFORNIA, 196.450-195.775. Morgan won vault (9.925), floor (9.925) and the all-around (39.225). Her score on vault tied her career-best, while she recorded a new season-best on floor. She tied her season-best on bars with a 9.850 which placed fourth. Earlier in the week against No. 9 Georgia, Morgan posted a 39.225 to win the all-around. She scored a 9.850 on bars in the meet to lead the Cardinal team on the event.

Sundby, an El Dorado Hills, Calif., native scored a career-high 9.90 on floor to lead the Sun Devils to a season-high floor team score of 49.150. Arizona State topped the Bruins on the event who were ranked No. 1 nationally on the event coming into the meet. Sundby placed first on floor, her first individual title on the event.

Bruin freshman DeJesus earned a first place and two second place finishes in the Bruins’ 196.275-195.600 victory over Arizona State. DeJe- sus tied for first place on beam with a 9.875, a mark that set a new career-high. She continued her success on floor where she set another career-high with a second 9.875, which tied for second place. She tied for second on bars as well with a 9.80.

This is Morgan’s second Gymnast of the Week honor and Stanford’s 23rd all-time and first this season. It is Sundby’s first Specialist of the Week honor and ASU’s fourth all-time. It is DeJesus’ second Freshman/Newcomer of the week honor and UCLA’s second all-time.

Arizona Despite posting a season high score of 196.075 the Wildcats fell to Utah (196.600) in the second home meet of the season The team posted an event season high on bars with a 49.150. Senior Aubree Cristello tallied a 9.75 to lead the team and tie for first place overall, seniorM olly Quirk tied for third overall with a 9.850. On beam, Cristello and Quirk went two-three scoring a 9.850 and 9.825, respectively. Junior Jordan Williams rounded out the top three placings for the Wildcats on floor tying for third with a 9.850. Cristello and Williams both competed in the all-around placing second and third. Williams’ score of a 39.200 was a career-high. Cristello totaled a 39.250.

Arizona State Posting a season-best score for the second meet in a row, the Sun Devils earned a 195.600 in the loss to UCLA (196.375). The Sun Devils really shined on floor where they beat UCLA the No. 1 team on floor in the nation. ASU posted a season-high 49.150 on the event. Sophomore Natasha Sundby led the team as she claimed her second individual title on floor in as many meets scoring the Sun Devils first 9.900 of the year and beating the No 1 and No. 2 individuals in the nation on the event, both UCLA gymnasts. Freshman Allie Salas earned a new career- best on the event with a 9.850.The freshmen duo of Risa Perez and Stephanie Miceli both earned a 9.850 for a new career-best on beam and tied for third overall on the night.

California Returning home the Golden Bears posted a new season high in the meet against Bay Area rival Stanford. Cal fell to the Cardinal 195.775- 196.450. The team score was Cal’s highest since March 23, 2007. In a season with consistent new season-bests the Golden Bears were led on bars by senior Madisyn O’Brien who tied for first on the event for the third time in four meets with a 9.95, a new career high. The score ties O’Brien for second in the Cal record book on bars and is the highest score on any event for a Golden Bear since 2004. On vault, the team was led by junior Alicia Austurias where she earned a 9.825 to tie for third overall. O’Brien again led the team, this time on beam, with a 9.850 a score that was good enough for second overall. The score was a new career best for the senior and is the highest score on the event for the Golden Bears this season. Finishing out the meet on floor, senior Mariesah Pierce tied for first overall with a 9.925 and freshmanSerena Leong placed third with a 9.900. Pierce’s score ranks second in the California record books on floor. The team total of 49.325 on the event is a season best.

Oregon State In a stellar meet at the Metroplex Challenge the Beavers went 24-for-24 to post a season-high 196.825 to place fourth behind Oklahoma (197.275), LSU (197.100) and Georgia (196.825). Senior Kelsi Blalock tallied a career-best 39.425 in the all-around to finish third overall. The team set a season-high best event score on bars with a 49.425. The Beavers were led by senior Stephanie McGregor and Makayla Stam- augh, both scoring a 9.925 to tie for third overall. Junior Brittany Harris led the way on beam earning a 9.875 to tie for second.

Stanford The Cardinal traveled close to home as they faced Bay Area rival California in a meet where Stanford came out on top, 196.450-195.775, the score was Stanford’s highest team score of the season. The Cardinal had a gymnast finish first on every event in the meet. SeniorA shley Morgan claimed two event titles for herself. She tied her career-best on vault with a 9.925 and recorded a new season-best on floor with a 9.925, both earning her first overall. She was not done claiming wins for the night as she also won the all-around with a 39.225. Freshman Taylor Rice stepped up on vault as she scored a career-high of 9.900 to earn second place overall, teammates freshman Melissa Chuang and sophomore Pauline Hanset were close behind with a pair of 9.825’s to tie for third overall. The Cardinal was led by sophomore Samantha Shapiro on bars where she claimed a career-best of 9.950 and tied for first overall. SophomoreK ristina Vaculik claimed third place with a 9.825. On beam, sophomore led the way with a 9.925 and junior Amanda Spinner claimed third with a 9.825.

UCLA After a week off the UCLA gymnasts came out strong to beat Arizona State 196.375-195.600. The team swept the top three places on vault en route to scoring a season-high team total on of 49.35. The Bruins were led by senior Vanessa Zamarripa with a 9.950. Junior Olivia Courtney claimed second with a 9.875, while senior Kaelie Baer and sophomore Dana McDonald tied for third with a pair of 9.850’s. Zamarripa again led the team on bars claiming the top spot overall with a 9.825, teammates freshman Sophina DeJesus and Courtney were close behind tying for second, both earning a 9.800. Freshman Danusia Francis and DeJesus led the way on beam tying for first with a duo of 9.875’s. Senior Lichelle Wong was close behind for third place with a 9.850. On floor, seniorA lyssa Pritchett and DeJesus tied for second with a pair of 9.875’s.

Utah The Utes hit the road traveling to Arizona where they posted another victory, 196.600-196.075. It was a collective effort on the night as six different gymnasts placed in the top three in individual events. The team swept the top three places on vault with sophomore Tory Wilson winning her third vault title in a row with a 9.950. Sophomore Georgia Dabritz was second with a 9.925, while junior Corrie Lothrop came in third with a 9.875. Moving onto bars the Utes were led this time by Dabritz where she tied for first on the event with a 9.875. Lothrop was right behind her with a 9.850, tying for third. Junior Mary Beth Lofgren led the team on beam posting a 9.90 for first overall. Rounding out the meet on floor the Utes once again earned the top three spots with sophomoreB ecky Tutka winning the event with a 9.90, Lothrop scoring a 9.875 for second and junior Nansy Damianova tying for thid with a 9.850.

Washington Continual improvement week-by-week the Huskies posted a season-high team score of 194.875 at the Metroplex Challenge to place fifth. Junior Aliza Vaccher headlined the success for the Huskies on the night posting a new career-high on floor of 9.925 to win first overall. This was her first individual event title of the season. The team posted a new season-high event total on bars with a 49.025. SeniorPhoebe Tham (9.875), freshmen Sheridan Metcalf (9.825) and Allison Northey (9.825) all posted career-highs on bars.
