  • Which Offenses Are Forgivable in Hollywood?
Which Offenses Are Forgivable in Hollywood? I miss Mel Gibson. Well, I miss his work in the movies, anyway. Though I thoroughly enjoyed the action heroes he portrayed early in his career, like Mad Max andLethal Weapon’s Martin Riggs, I’m particularly fond of his work as a director. Braveheart and Apocalypto are two of my favorite films, and The Passion of the Christ was a groundbreaking, gutsy movie on several fronts. But as we all know, Gibson was involved in some self- destructive behavior a few years ago. In addition to substance abuse problems, he was caught on tape making sexist, anti- Semitic, and later racist remarks that pretty much derailed his career. His talent agency dropped him, he’s been thoroughly shunned by his peers, and he’s been unable to find investors for his projects. He’s largely become a ghost in Hollywood, turning up only in a couple of obscure, wince- worthy acting roles since then. The film industry’s banishment of Mel Gibson has been so crippling that longtime friend, Robert Downey Jr., felt compelled to speak out about it at the 25th American Cinematheque Awards, back in late 2011. Downey pled with his peers to forgive Gibson of his “trespasses,” and let him back into their good graces so he can continue to contribute to their “collective art” without shame. Little has happened in response. Mel is still on the outs, and it looks like he’s going to stay right there. It makes you wonder exactly which offenses are forgivable to the Hollywood elite.

L3700 LETHAL WEAPON (USA, 1987) (Other titles: Arma lethale; Arme fatale; Dodbringende veben; Zwei stahlharte profis) Credits: director, Richard Donner ; writer, Shane Black. Cast: Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey. Summary: Police thriller set in contemporary Los Angeles. Martin Riggs (Gibson) is no ordinary cop. He is a Vietnam veteran whose killing expertise and suicidal recklessness make him a lethal weapon to anyone he works against or with. Roger Murtaugh (Glover), also a veteran, is an easy-going homicide detective with a loving family, a big house, and a pension he does not want to lose. The only thing Murtaugh and Riggs have in common is that they hate to work with partners, but their partnership becomes the key to survival when a routine murder investigation turns into an all-out war with an international heroin ring. • Rebellious Women in Men's Dystopia: Katniss and Furiosa
Article Info/Makale Bilgisi Received/Geliş: 20.09.2016 Accepted/Kabul: 30.10.2016 DOİ: 10.5505/pausbed.2017.22599 REBELLIOUS WOMEN IN MEN’S DYSTOPIA: KATNISS AND FURIOSA ∗ Cenk TAN Abstract Dystopian fiction serves as a premonition against possible future perils of humanity. Its popularity is largely attributed to its overdose of action and commercial success which explains the high number of film adaptations in Hollywood. However, the genre is commonly acclaimed to be dominated by men whereas women usually exist as vague, trivial personalities. The Hunger Games and Mad Max are two major film productions (the former adapted from novel) which have subverted this general understanding and turned the notion of the male hero upside-down by creating the rebellious heroine. Katniss and Furiosa are perfect illustrations of determined, powerful women whom rebel against the patriarchal order in the hegemonic, male dystopia. This study places Katniss and Furiosa in spotlight and analyses both movies from an ecofeminist perspective which maintains a special bond between women and nature. This essay thus aims to reveal environmental issues in relationship with the female protagonists. Key Words: Dystopia, Ecofeminism, Hunger Games, Mad Max, Film Studies.

LETHAL WEAPON PREMIERES THIS SUNDAY AT THE SPECIAL TIME OF 8.00PM ON IMPARJA The gripping cop drama series Lethal Weapon premieres this Sunday, January 29, at the special time of 8.00pm and will continue Sundays at 9.00pm on Imparja. Lethal Weapon, based on the thrilling hit movie franchise of the same name, combines drama, action, friendship and humour as it follows the story of the classic cop duo Martin Riggs (Clayne Crawford) and Roger Murtaugh (Damon Wayans) working through crime-ridden, modern-day Los Angeles. Following the tragic loss of his wife and unborn child, ex- Navy SEAL- turned -detective, Riggs moves to California to work for the LAPD and starts a new life. Riggs is partnered with Murtaugh, who has just returned to the job following a near-fatal heart attack. It is clear from the moment they meet that this partnership will severely test their patience because Riggs has a tendency to dive headfirst into the line of fire, which clashes with Murtaugh’s conservative, by-the-book-technique. During their first shootout with drug dealers, Riggs’ headfirst approach to crime brings out a side to Murtaugh that he hasn’t seen in himself for some time, making him feel more alive than he has in years. At the end of their first day together this odd cop duo figure that their new arrangement might work out after all —as Riggs realises he has found something worth living for: a mate and a partner. LETHAL WEAPON: SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, AT 8.00PM ON IMPARJA .

  • Guide to Film Movements
This was originally published by Empire ( here is their Best of 2020 list) but no longer available. A Guide to Film Movements . FRENCH IMPRESSIONISM (1918-1930) Key filmmakers: Abel Gance, Louis Delluc, Germaine Dulac, Marcel L'Herbier, Jean Epstein What is it? The French Impressionist filmmakers took their name from their painterly compatriots and applied it to a 1920s boom in silent film that jolted cinema in thrilling new directions. The devastation of World War I parlayed into films that delved into the darker corners of the human psyche and had a good rummage about while they were there. New techniques in non-linear editing, point-of-view storytelling and camera work abounded. Abel Gance’s Napoleon introduced the widescreen camera and even stuck a camera operator on rollerskates to get a shot, while Marcel L'Herbier experimented with stark new lighting styles. Directors like Gance, Germaine Dulac and Jean Epstein found valuable support from Pathé Fréres and Leon Gaumont, France’s main production houses, in a reaction to the stifling influx of American films. As Empire writer and cineguru David Parkinson points out in 100 Ideas That Changed Film, the group’s figurehead, Louis Delluc, was instrumental in the still-new art form being embraced as something apart, artistically and geographically. “French cinema must be cinema,” he stressed. “French cinema must be French.” And being French, it wasn’t afraid to get a little sexy if the circumstances demanded. Germaine Dulac’s The Seashell And The Clergyman, an early step towards surrealism, gets into the head of a lascivious priest gingering after a general’s wife in a way usually frowned on in religious circles.

  • Deconstructing Martial Arts
CHAPTER 7 Fighting Talk – Martial Arts Discourse in Mainstream Films Introduction This chapter examines conversations, dialogues and statements about martial arts in films that can by no stretch of the imagination be regarded as martial arts films. It does this in order to glean insights into the status of martial arts in mainstream popular culture. As such, although it is a study that reads and takes evidence from films, its concerns are not those of the discipline of film studies. Rather, it is interested in the ways that martial arts are understood, positioned, and given value within the wider flows, circuits, networks or discourses of cul- ture. As well as offering a discrete analysis of martial arts discourse as registered in film dialogue, this chapter also serves as a recapitulation and reiteration of the overarching poststructuralist or deconstructive theoretical framework that has organised this book. The premise here is that mainstream, non-specialist films in which dialogue about martial arts occurs can be regarded as texts that relate to, arise from, register, and feed back into wider understandings of and opinions about mar- tial arts. This is especially the case for films set in the contemporary world and which implicitly make some kind of claim to having some kind of relationship with realism (even if they are comedies). Of course, there is no simple mapping of or direct relation between repre- sentation and reality here. A statement or conversation offered in a fiction film does not simply reflect or recount opinions circulating in face-to-face or online conversations among real people in the ‘real world’.
