A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN he most important premise that motivates everyone involved with the Extra Mile Education Foundation is that all children deserve an education that will get them off to a good start academically, morally and emotionally. Without such a start, the quality of children’s lives can be severely compromised. TThrough subsidy support of St. Benedict the Moor School in the Hill District and Sr. Thea Bowman Catholic Academy in Wilkinsburg, along with scholarship grants to economically disadvantaged children in other Catholic elementary schools serving urban neighborhoods — East Catholic, St. Bartholomew’s and North Side Catholic — children learn and succeed. Our partners include: • Families who, despite difficult circumstances, want the very best for their children and know that best starts with a quality, values-based education; • School leaders and teachers who care deeply about the success of the children and work diligently so that success is achieved daily; • Parish leadership that helps to sustain the schools and their identities as community education resources for all children, regardless of background and religious affiliation; • Donors who provide financial support to Extra Mile so that the children – more than 600 in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade – can get going – one day at a time, one grade at a time, and one year at a time. In this past year, another partner has joined us — YPAC (Young Professional Advisory Committee). This organization of young business professionals has worked on fund-raising and friend-raising projects that have expanded awareness to those who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children. We are very pleased with our association with YPAC and look forward to continued progress and success in the years ahead. To all our partners, we say thank you for joining us in a most important cause. J. Christopher Donahue Chairman of the Board A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP DAVID A. ZUBIK y Dear Friends, The Extra Mile Education Foundation’s efforts to help urban children realize their potential date back to Mthe late 1980s. It was begun in response to parents requesting the Diocese keep open the Catholic schools that were making such a difference in their children’s lives. The reputation, accomplishments, and results of the education delivered by the Catholic schools serving urban children are exceptional and have always been perceived so. Academics and values are stressed equally throughout the course of the educational experience. And results speak for themselves. Nearly all children graduating from an Extra Mile-supported school complete high school in four years. And most of those children go on to college, trade school, or other training programs, including military service. When we hear from alumni, we hear about success, fulfillment, focus, determination, and gratitude. They tell us that the commitment by their teachers sparked a rise in their own self-worth. They learned early and often that hard work is a big part of every day. They tell us their teachers helped them to realize their own gifts and potential, which energized them to do so much more. They learned there is a “higher authority.” There is no doubt that the Catholic schools supported by Extra Mile are making a great difference, and it is a difference that lasts a lifetime. Thank you for most generous support. Grateful for our belief that “Nothing is impossible with God,” I am Your brother in Christ, Most Reverend David A.
