he most important premise that motivates everyone involved with the Extra Mile Education Foundation is that all children deserve an education that will get them off to a good start academically, morally and emotionally. Without such a start, the quality of children’s lives can be severely compromised.

TThrough subsidy support of St. Benedict the Moor School in the Hill District and Sr. Thea Bowman Catholic Academy in Wilkinsburg, along with scholarship grants to economically disadvantaged children in other Catholic elementary schools serving urban neighborhoods — East Catholic, St. Bartholomew’s and Catholic — children learn and succeed.

Our partners include:

• Families who, despite difficult circumstances, want the very best for their children and know that best starts with a quality, values-based education; • School leaders and teachers who care deeply about the success of the children and work diligently so that success is achieved daily; • Parish leadership that helps to sustain the schools and their identities as community education resources for all children, regardless of background and religious affiliation; • Donors who provide financial support to Extra Mile so that the children – more than 600 in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade – can get going – one day at a time, one grade at a time, and one year at a time.

In this past year, another partner has joined us — YPAC (Young Professional Advisory Committee). This organization of young business professionals has worked on fund-raising and friend-raising projects that have expanded awareness to those who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children. We are very pleased with our association with YPAC and look forward to continued progress and success in the years ahead.

To all our partners, we say thank you for joining us in a most important cause.

J. Christopher Donahue Chairman of the Board A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP DAVID A. ZUBIK

y Dear Friends,

The Extra Mile Education Foundation’s efforts to help urban children realize their potential date back to Mthe late 1980s. It was begun in response to parents requesting the Diocese keep open the Catholic schools that were making such a difference in their children’s lives. The reputation, accomplishments, and results of the education delivered by the Catholic schools serving urban children are exceptional and have always been perceived so. Academics and values are stressed equally throughout the course of the educational experience. And results speak for themselves.

Nearly all children graduating from an Extra Mile-supported school complete high school in four years. And most of those children go on to college, trade school, or other training programs, including military service.

When we hear from alumni, we hear about success, fulfillment, focus, determination, and gratitude.

They tell us that the commitment by their teachers sparked a rise in their own self-worth. They learned early and often that hard work is a big part of every day.

They tell us their teachers helped them to realize their own gifts and potential, which energized them to do so much more.

They learned there is a “higher authority.”

There is no doubt that the Catholic schools supported by Extra Mile are making a great difference, and it is a difference that lasts a lifetime.

Thank you for most generous support.

Grateful for our belief that “Nothing is impossible with God,” I am

Your brother in Christ,

Most Reverend David A. Zubik Bishop of Pittsburgh 2012 YEAR IN REVIEW

A MESSAGE FROM THE YOUNG PROFESIONAL ADVISIORY COMMITTEE (YPAC)

n 2011, Extra Mile’s Board of Directors sought to engage a group of young professionals in the Pittsburgh community for the purpose of addressing an accelerating demand for student scholarships. Over the following year, a group of young professionals took on a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, conducting donor research, developing fundraising programs, and planning various fundraising events. As the group’s efforts progressed and its original fundraising goals were successfully attained, the group expressed a desire to further Iformalize itself in order to create and maintain a sustainable resource of talent that would continue to support Extra Mile into the foreseeable future.

With these goals in mind, in 2012, the group adopted the name “Young Professional Advisory Committee” or “YPAC” and established its vision to serve as a team of diverse, creative, and energetic individuals that support Extra Mile’s mission of helping children and their families meet the challenge of obtaining a values-based, quality education.

Over the past year, YPAC has grown and evolved into a diverse team of 17 young professionals that provides Extra Mile with the necessary insight and resources to succeed by:

• Developing and expanding its Sponsor a Student Program; • Providing guidance and thought leadership on fundraising strategies, opportunities, and plans of action; • Supplementing strategies for increasing its donor base; • Managing special projects and events at the request of the Board; • Injecting creative thought to address challenges facing the foundation; and • Volunteering for fundraising initiatives and marketing efforts.

As Extra Mile continues its critical role in transforming the lives of its students, YPAC is thrilled to continue its support of that vital mission.

Thank you for continuing to support Extra Mile. Together, we look forward to achieving even greater success in the future.

Shawn O’Brien President - YPAC A TRIBUTE TO JOHN MAROUS

n 1989, during the formation of the Extra Mile Education Foundation, Mr. John C. Marous was asked to accept the position of Chairman of the Board. He did so with enthusiasm, energy and a fervent commitment to the mission of helping Iunder-resourced children through Catholic education. John served as chairman for 11 years. During that time, finances of the Extra Mile-supported schools were stabilized, an endowment for the Foundation was established and two major galas were held — the Hard Hat Ball held at the then soon-to be opened Pittsburgh International Airport, and the Foundation’s 10th anniversary celebration with George H. W. Bush as the keynote guest speaker, along with Janard Pendleton, an alumnus of St. Benedict the Moor School, who recently completed his doctorate in the School of Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh.

John was a hard-charging leader with a gleam in his eye. He was happy in his work for the simple reason that it benefited so many children who could otherwise be left behind. And he was unabashed about asking anyone to join in the cause. Many of Extra Mile’s first donors recruited by John continue to support the organization to this day.

He died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, in October, 2012. He left a generous bequest to Extra Mile. His mantra —“fantastic and improving” — not only applied to himself, but to all the causes that he championed over the years.

Extra Mile and the children it helps are enormously grateful for John’s exceptional leadership. SUPPORT EXTRA MILE Extra Mile Education Foundation depends on philanthropic support from foundations, corporations, and individuals to fulfill its mission.
