Media Release Media Release Basel, 22 July 2016 Lukas (Luc) Hoffmann dies at the age of 93 On Thursday 21 July 2016, Dr Lukas (Luc) Hoffmann, grandson of Roche founder Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche and his wife, Adele, died at the age of 93. Luc Hoffmann was a member of the Board of Directors for over 40 years - from 1953 to 1996. He supported the company with great commitment from an expansion phase in the sixties and seventies to its entry into biotechnology and molecular diagnostics. Luc Hoffmann was a strong advocate for basic research, one of the prerequisites for Roche's success as a research-focused - organisation. A committed conservationist, Luc Hoffmann consistently created an awareness of social and environmental responsibilities. He was convinced that sustainability is important not just for the environment, but also – and equally – for Roche as an underlying principle; with this conviction, he was influential in developing and implementing Roche’s sustainability strategy. Luc Hoffmann, born 1923 as the son of Emanuel Hoffmann and Maja Hoffmann-Stehlin, studied zoology in Basel and received his doctorate in 1952. He married Daria Razumovsky (1925-2002) the following year, and together they had four children. From 1954, he devoted great effort to setting up the "Station biologique de la Tour du Valat" research centre in the Camargue (France) at the heart of a nature reserve, and made the centre’s management his lifelong project. He was also a founding member and Vice President of the WWF (1961–1988) and was actively involved in a host of other conservation and cultural projects. In 1994, he established the MAVA foundation for conservation – the name is drawn from the initials of his four children – Maja, André, Vera, and Daschenka. He received prizes and awards for his scientific work and commitment from countless countries and organisations, including numerous honorary doctorates, the Euronatur Award for Environmental Excellence (Germany), the Kai Curry-Lindahl Award of the Colonial Waterbird Society (USA) and the Duke of Edinburgh Conservation Medal (WWF International). Luc Hoffmann was also Chevalier and Officier de la Légion d'honneur (France). Feed it with the past. There are right times for doing that, mo- ments when we need to step back, evaluate what we have already achieved, and think about the challenges that lie ahead. We are indeed at one of these moments today, at the crossroads of key historical dates that are milestones and points of reference for the Tour du Valat. In 2013, we celebrated the ninetieth birthday of Luc Hoffmann, who found- ed the Tour du Valat and many other major organisations considered to be of reference in nature conservation. Ninety years of passion and commit- ment to restore a harmonious relationship between Humankind and Nature, driven by his constant desire to understand and take action, and guided by his humanistic vision, while remaining extremely modest.     Luc HOFFMANN (1923-2016) – Notice biographique Fondateur de la Station biologique de la Tour du Valat (1954) ; co-fondateur (1961) du World Wildlife Fund (WWF) ; un des contributeurs à l’élaboration de la Convention de Ramsar sur la préservation des zones humides (1971) ; inspirateur et créateur de nombreuses zones protégées en Europe (Doñana, Hortobagy, Prespa…) et en Afrique (Banc d’Arguin) ; Fondateur de la Fondation MAVA (1994) ; mécène de la protection de la nature. Luc Hoffmann était un ornithologue, un écologue et un philanthrope reconnu dans ces trois dimensions. Né le 23 Janvier 1923 à Bâle (Suisse), il est le second fils d’Emmanuel Hoffmann, industriel et homme d’affaires, mais aussi grand amateur d’art, et de la sculptrice Maja Hoffmann-Stehlin. Luc Hoffmann a peu connu son père, mort dans un accident de voiture, alors qu’il n’était âgé que de neuf ans. Son frère aîné disparaît quelques mois plus tard, à l’âge de 11 ans, atteint d’une leucémie. Sa sœur, Véra, épousa Jakob Oeri ; elle est décédée en 2003. C’est son grand-père, Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche, qui fonde, en 1896, la société pharmaceutique Hoffmann-La Roche, devenue une entreprise d’envergure mondiale, et dont la famille est l’actionnaire majoritaire. De 1953 à 1996 Luc Hoffmann est membre et vice-président du conseil d’administration. Issu du milieu de la grande industrie, mais une vocation très précoce pour les choses de la nature Issu d’un milieu aisé, il grandit dans une ambiance dominée par la modestie. Très jeune, dès l’âge de dix ans, il manifeste attirance et enthousiasme pour la nature.
