All seating will be socially distanced. “An indie pop diva with an avant-garde edge." --The New York Times Known for her "relentless originality and unflinching social conscience." --The New Yorker (December 2, 2020) The Hermitage Artist Retreat’s popular beachfront series continues with “Future Tradition,” featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and performer Du Yun, Friday, December 18, 5 p.m. This outdoor event is at the Hermitage Beach; entrance at 6660 Manasota Key Road, Englewood. Capacity will be limited to accommodate safe social distancing, so early reservations are recommended. Masks are strongly encouraged. Registration is required at HermitageArtistRetreat.org. Please note: starting in 2021, to accommodate added capacity restrictions and social- distancing measures, a modest five dollar per person registration charge will be added to confirm your space. Born and raised in Shanghai, China, and currently based in New York City, Du Yun works at the intersection of opera, orchestral, theater, cabaret, musical, oral tradition, public performances, electronics, visual arts, and noise. Her body of work is championed by some of today's finest performing groups and organizations around the world. Known for her "relentless originality and unflinching social conscience" (The New Yorker), Du Yun's second opera Angel's Bone won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize; in 2018 she was named a Guggenheim Fellow; and in 2019, she was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Classical Composition category for her work Air Glow. As an avid performer and bandleader (Ok Miss), her onstage persona has been described by The New York Times as "an indie pop diva with an avant-garde edge." Yun founded Future Tradition, a global initiative that illuminates the lineages of folk art and uses these structures to build cross-regional collaborations from the ground up. Yun has collaborated with artists and musicians of United Arab Emirates, Istanbul, Central Asia, and China. She led a team of performing artists, scholars, documentary filmmakers, and visual artists, working closely together with local regional opera troupes, as well as masters and amateurs of traditional art forms, to create new works. In addition to fostering new art, this platform illuminates existing traditional repertoires from different cultures by setting them side by side. At its heart, Future Tradition focuses on developing new works through cultural dialogue by looking at an art form’s DNA. Yun is professor of composition at the Peabody Institute, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. A community champion, she was a founding member of the International Contemporary Ensemble; served as the Artistic Director of MATA Festival; and conceived the Pan Asia Sounding Festival (National Sawdust). In 2018, Yun was named one of 38 Great Immigrants by the Carnegie Foundation, and the Beijing Music Festival named her “Artist of the Year.” Hear Du Yun’s music and see her images here: ChannelDuYun.com The Hermitage hosts artists on its Gulf Coast Manasota Key campus for multi- week residencies. Artists come from around the world and across multiple disciplines create and develop new works of visual art, theater, music, literature, and more. As part of their residencies, Hermitage Fellows are asked to participate in community programs, affording audiences in our region the unique opportunity to engage with some of the world’s leading artists and to get a “sneak peek” into extraordinary projects and artistic minds before their works go on to major galleries, concert halls, theaters, and museums around the world. These programs include performances, lectures, interactive experiences, open studios, school programs, teacher workshops, and more, serving thousands in our regional community each year. About the Hermitage Artist Retreat: The Hermitage is a nonprofit artist retreat located in Manasota Key, Florida, inviting accomplished artists across multiple disciplines for residencies on its beachfront campus, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Hermitage artists are invited to interact with the local community, reaching thousands of Gulf Coast residents and visitors each year with unique and inspiring programs. Hermitage Fellows have included twelve Pulitzer Prize winners, along with multiple Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and MacArthur Fellowship award winners. Works created at this beachside retreat by a diverse group of Hermitage alumni have gone on to renowned theaters, concert halls, and galleries throughout the world. Each year, the Hermitage awards the $30,000 Hermitage Greenfield Prize for a new work of art, and the Aspen Music Festival awards the annual Hermitage Prize in Composition.     SHANGHAI QUARTET 2020-21 BIOGRAPHY Over the past thirty-seven years the Shanghai Quartet has become one of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles. The Shanghai’s elegant style, impressive technique, and emotional breadth allows the group to move seamlessly between masterpieces of Western music, traditional Chinese folk music, and cutting-edge contemporary works. Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983, soon after the end of China’s harrowing Cultural Revolution, the group came to the United States to complete its studies; since then the members have been based in the U.S. while maintaining a robust touring schedule at leading chamber-music series throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Recent performance highlights include performances at Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Freer Gallery (Washington, D.C.), and the Festival Pablo Casals in France, and Beethoven cycles for the Brevard Music Center, the Beethoven Festival in Poland, and throughout China. The Quartet also frequently performs at Wigmore Hall, the Budapest Spring Festival, Suntory Hall, and has collaborations with the NCPA and Shanghai Symphony Orchestras. Upcoming highlights include the premiere of a new work by Marcos Balter for the Quartet and countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo for the Phillips Collection, return performances for Maverick Concerts and the Taos School of Music, and engagements in Los Angeles, Syracuse, Albuquerque, and Salt Lake City. Among innumberable collaborations with eminent artists, they have performed with the Tokyo, Juilliard, and Guarneri Quartets; cellists Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Harrell; pianists Menahem Pressler, Peter Serkin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Yuja Wang; pipa virtuoso Wu Man; and the vocal ensemble Chanticleer.

    Sweat, by Lynn Nottage, Was Developed by Co-Commission from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’S American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle and Arena Stage

    Sweat, by Lynn Nottage, was developed by co-commission from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s American Revolutions: The United States History Cycle and Arena Stage. The play is centered on the working class of Reading, Pennsylvania. Lynn Nottage began working on the play in 2011 by interviewing numerous residents of Reading, Pennsylvania, which at the time was, according to the United States Census Bureau, officially one of the poorest cities in America, with a poverty rate of over 40%. Nottage has said that she was particularly influenced by a New York Times article reporting on the city specifically, and by the Occupy Wall Street movement more generally. She explored the effects on residents of the loss of heavy industry and the changing ethnic composition of the city. Shifting in time between 2000 and 2008, taking place mostly in the local bar, Sweat tells the story of a group of friends, who have spent their lives sharing drinks, secrets, and laughs while working together on the factory floor. When layoffs and picket lines begin to chip away at their trust, the friends find themselves pitted against each other in a heart-wrenching fight to stay afloat. “…a cautionary tale of what happens when you don’t know how to resist.” – Time Out New York “Nottage feels that what unifies her plays is their “morally ambiguous heroes or heroines, people who are fractured within their own bodies, who have to make very difficult choices in order to survive.”… The plays also give voice to marginalized lives.” – The New Yorker Winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama On her research and approach to developing the play while in Reading, Nottage adopted the motto, “Replace judgement with curiosity.” It would be tested.

The piece includes a libretto by Royce Vavrek. The Pulitzer jury described it as a “bold operatic work that integrates vocal and instrumental elements and a wide range of styles into a harrowing allegory for human trafficking in the modern world.” Du Yun, who is known for her cutting edge work, told NPR that “When we look at human trafficking, we always think that it's far away from us. We all have our own narrative of what human trafficking is supposed to be, but if you do a little research, human trafficking happens, in many different forms and shapes, right in our backyard." A flowering garden sets the scene for the world premiere of award-winning composer Hannah Lash’s newest chamber opera. Written for a cast of three singers and string quartet, Desire grapples with the human, personal struggle of trusting oneself in the midst of doubt. The score paints a lush sonic landscape, performed by the adventurous JACK Quartet, and transports audiences to this metaphoric garden of creativity. Major support for Desire is provided by Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trusts. Additional support is provided by the Howard Gilman Foundation. Desire SYNOPSIS Present day. Set in a bedroom without definitive boundaries. A man and a woman lie in bed. The man sleeps, while she lies awake. The woman quietly climbs out of bed slowly, careful not to wake the man. The woman moves to the outer parts of the bedroom where it is dark. A warm, cavernous environment emerges. She calls out and is surprised to hear an echo. She continues to call out, the echo responds. Is it another person? She discovers curiosities around her and wonders if they may be hiding other secrets. She then discovers a figure who seems to belong to this mysterious space.

The multi-season initiative — the single largest women-only commissioning initiative in history — will launch in February 2020 with the first six World Premieres. Two more World Premieres will follow in May–June 2020. The eleven remaining commissions will be premiered in future seasons. The commissioned composers are Unsuk Chin, Mary Kouyoumdjian, Joan La Barbara, Tania León, Nicole Lizée, Caroline Mallonee, Jessie Montgomery, Angélica Negrón, Olga Neuwirth, Paola Prestini, Ellen Reid, Maria Schneider, Caroline Shaw, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Joan Tower, Melinda Wagner, Nina C. Young, and Du Yun. Music Director Jaap van Zweden said: “As one of the leading orchestras in America, it is the New York Philharmonic’s responsibility, and our joy, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of American women’s right to vote with this vast commissioning project.” President and CEO Deborah Borda said: “Project 19 was born of our conviction that an orchestra can — and must — participate in conversations about social imperatives and even change the status quo.
