Fr. Drago Gačnik SDB ŽUPNIK – SLOVENSKA ŽUPNIJA SV. GREGORIJA VELIKEGA Hamilton. ON Canada

Father Gačnik’s Photos: http://www.cleslo.com/photos/2009-09-25.shtml

V petek, 25. Standing ovations mark church's end: Ss. Cyril & Methodius, a century of Slovenian tradition

Published: Monday, October 5, 2009

Source: http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/2009/10/05/news/mj1675494.txt

LORAIN — More than a century of religious devotion and Slovenian tradition closed yesterday, marked with two standing ovations for a well-loved pastor and a few tears for the end of an era, as the final Mass was said at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, 1709 E. 31st St.

About 200 people attended the service, filling the pews and standing along the white-painted walls of the green- carpeted sanctuary, as autumnal sunlight filtered through the stained-glass windows.

From babes-in-arms to white-haired elders leaning on canes, they listened quietly as Fr. Lawrence Jurcak, secretary and vicar for clergy and religious for the Cleveland Diocese, said the final Mass. Bishop Richard Lennon, head of the Cleveland Diocese, could not celebrate the final Mass because he is on pilgrimage to Rome, according to Robert Tayek, a spokesman for the diocese.

The Ss. Cyril & Methodius parish, with about 100 members, is merging with St. John the Baptist, 2143 Homewood Drive, and St. Vitus Croatian Catholic, 1785 E. 32nd St., in coming months as the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland responds to declining congregations by closing some parishes and merging others. Final Masses were celebrated last week at St. Stanislaus Church and St. Ladislaus Church, just blocks away from Ss. Cyril & Methodius in South Lorain.

Jurcak sees the merging of Ss. Cyril & Methodius, St. John the Baptist and St. Vitus parishes as a coming full circle of the Slovenian and Croatian immigrants in Lorain.

Ss. Cyril & Methodius parish was established in 1905 from the Slovenian and Croatian communities that were growing in Lorain, Jurcak said. The church building, of pale gray stone, was built in 1952.

"When Slovenians and Croatians came to Lorain, they worshipped at St. John's," he said. "By 1922, the Croatians formed their own parish. Now they're coming back together."

The new parish will be named in honor of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, the first American to become a saint. She is considered the patroness of immigrants, Jurcak said.

Jurcak was assisted in the Mass by Father Paul Krajnik, the pastor of Ss. Cyril & Methodius for the last 34 years; Father Charles Strebler, who has been assisting Krajnik; and Father Joseph Yelenc. When Jurcak asked the congregation to honor Krajnik for his service, they twice rose to their feet for thundering applause and cheers.

Krajnik, 87, said all of his 34 years at Ss. Cyril & Methodius were good years.

"I admire the congregation for being so faithful," he said. "It's sad to say goodbye." He was surrounded by well- wishers after the Mass who wanted to recall favorite memories and assure him they would stay in touch.

Krajnik will move next week to St. Augustine Tower, an assisted-living center run by Catholic Charities in Cleveland, Tayek said.

Yelenc, a former member of Ss. Cyril & Methodius, is a teacher at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

"I celebrated my first Mass here, and my uncle celebrated his first Mass here," Yelenc said, his voice shaking with emotion. "It's a place of warmth and generosity. The bells, the choir and the organ will be silent, but not us. Fear is useless. What we all need is trust."

During the 95-minute service, Jurcak asked those who were baptized at Ss. Cyril & Methodius to stand. He then asked those who were confirmed there to stand, followed by those who accepted their first Eucharist there, those who were married there and those who had attended a funeral there. By the end, nearly everyone was standing.

"You have enriched the faith and the people you have encountered," he said. "That's what we celebrate today. You will bring your rich Slovenian heritage to your new parish. No ending is ever easy. But the way Ss. Cyril & Methodius has touched your heart will always be there. Bring that with you as you go on to form your new parish community. As we walk out these doors for the last time today, Christ goes with us."

Support for Ss. Cyril & Methodius was shown by a group from Holy Trinity Church, who held a banner emblazoned with the message "Our hearts are with you" in front of the church before and after the Mass.

Judy Maldonado, 65, dabbed at tears throughout the service.

"I made my first communion here in 1953," she said. "I saw this church being built, and I think this (the closing) is terrible. I live in Puerto Rico now, but whenever I'm in Lorain I always come to Mass here. It's very special."

Lorain City Council President Joel Arredondo, is a member of Ss. Cyril & Methodius and serves as president of the parish council. Learning the church was to close and the parish would merge with others was like getting the call that someone you love has a terminal illness, he said.

"It was a terrible shock," he said. "But there is a reason God does these things. This is not a funeral, but a celebration."

The church property, at Globe Avenue and East 31st Street, will go up for sale, Tayek said. Statues and other religious goods have been documented and inventoried, and could be used at the new parish, he said. They could also go to other parishes in Cleveland or across the country, he said.

Pittsburgh to host SloBowl United 2009

Attention, bowlers! SloBowl United 2009 is scheduled for November 14 in the Pittsburgh area. SloBowl United is a three-game, individual-event bowling tournament open to anyone of Slovenian descent as well as to all members of KSKJ Life, SNPJ, and AMLA.

The inaugural event, held in November 2008 in Cleveland, attracted 80 bowlers. The idea, initiated by former Slovenian Consul General in Cleveland Dr. Zvone Žigon, is to get Slovenian Americans and members of these three great fraternal organizations together for a day of bowling, fun and fraternalism.

The event will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, at Paradise Lanes on Neville Island, Pa. Kevin Richards, SNPJ’s fraternal director, is serving as tournament secretary. The entry fee of $25 allows participants to bowl a three-game individual series and be eligible for both scratch and handicap prizes. Nearly 65% of entry fees will be returned in prizes in the following divisions: Youth (age 16–18), Adult Men (age 19 and up) and Adult Women (age 19 and up). Dear SWUA Members and Friends:

The purpose of this letter is to introduce a Holiday Season fundraiser to support The Slovenian Women’s Union of America. During the last two years we have had to do some unexpected building repairs to our 100 year old historic building. This building is home to our offices and the Heritage Museum. To help us offset the cost of some of the repairs, we are offering you the opportunity to order beautiful Christmas items made from fresh evergreens to decorate your home or to give as gifts to your families and friends. Each wreath comes with a door hanger. Orders will arrive at your door via UPS or Fed Ex. between November 23 and December 11.

If you order as a gift, a tree seedling will be planted in the recipient’s honor in one of Minnesota’s forests. Simply fill in your message on the order blank. There is no cost for this. Anyone who has ever visited Slovenia knows how Slovenians love their beautiful green forests. In addition to purchasing a decoration for your home, you will be helping the SWUA meet their financial endeavors.

Take a few minutes to make your selection and follow the procedure below to place your order. Let all your friends and neighbors know about our fundraiser too!! Fill out the attached copy of the form:

Checks should be made payable to SWUA Add email address on bottom of order form so we can send tracking no. Send to: SWUA c/o Carol Ryba 3305 Glenshane Way Ormond Beach, FL 32174

After your check is received, you will be sent a tracking number via e‐mail. Checks should be sent prior to October 31 so that we have time to finalize the paper work. We know you will not be disappointed in these lovely Christmas decorations.

Sincerely,

Carol Ryba Vice President of Home Office [email protected]

Dual citizenship

Jaymie Stuart Wolfe Posted: 10/2/2009

We aren’t really planning to travel anywhere, except for Kyril’s Irish Step World Championships trip to Glasgow next Spring. But still, I put a note on my multicolor, multilevel, multi-everything computer calendar to remind me that almost everyone’s passport was near expiration. I made sure Kolbe’s was renewed before he left for college. And when September rolled around, I did a home photo shoot of four of the five kids left at home and guided a communal filling out of forms at the dining room table. “Now, line 17. Does anyone know where your father was born?”

Juliana was interested, but exempt. That’s because she’s on her own renewal schedule, and got her new U.S. passport last year. But because her older sister is now working in Russia, it occurred to me that Juliana’s Russian passport had probably expired. I went online to find out how to renew the passport of a Russian-born American adopted minor child. Because she was born in Russia, Juliana enjoys dual citizenship. Unless she renounces either her American or Russian citizenship--and I hope she never does--belonging to two nations is something Juliana will always have.

Recently, I’ve looked into applying for dual citizenship myself, not in Russia, but with the Republic of Slovenia. Evidently, the small relatively new nation that was part of former Yugoslavia is now granting citizenship on the basis of ancestry through the fourth generation. It seems you only need to have one ancestor to qualify. I’m fully half Slovenian, and only the third generation born here. I don’t speak the language, though I’ve certainly tried to learn it. But I have done a reasonable job of observing and passing on the cultural and historical heritage of one of Europe’s smallest ethnic groups. Our kids have grown up with Sveti Miklavs (St. Nicholas Day), traditional blessed basket of symbolic Easter , intricately colored eggs (thanks to the help of our cultural cousins, the Ukrainians), a household family shrine of religious items, stories of their ancestors’ homeland and immigration, music, dancing and an awareness of what Slovenes have contributed to the world. (For a little Alpine country the size of Massachusetts, there’s more than one would expect.)

Cultural identity is much more than what you serve for holiday dinners. I’ve been to Slovenia twice, though not in a very long time. And even though I didn’t know my way around, or understand much of the language, it still felt not at all like a foreign country, but strangely very much like home. Maybe it was because everyone looked like me, behaved in similar ways, and seemed to value the same things. The toughness, the laughter, the intensity and music and drama were all very familiar. I experienced a commonality that was preserved over three generations by the way my mother’s side of the family raised their children. The few distant relatives I met there were cut from the same fabric as the ones I knew all my life. Because I’ve raised my children the same way, I think they’d have the same experience I did. If and when they walk down to the bridge in Ljubljana or along the shores of Lake Bled, they won’t feel as if they’re far away from home. They’ll discover they’ve had another home all along.

As Christians, we are dual citizens too. We make our homes here on earth, but we have an eternal home being prepared for us in heaven. We are citizens there as we are here, with all the rights and responsibilities that come with belonging to something greater than ourselves. We have a history and a culture, a language and literature, a heritage of art and music and relatives both close and distant. We are part of what Peter called “a holy nation,” a “royal priesthood,” a “people set apart.” And as strange as it may seem, I am convinced that, when we get there, heaven will feel surprisingly familiar. We’ll be known and loved, accepted and embraced by others with whom we share the most fundamental things: faith in God, and love for Him.

CHURCH ORGAN DEDICATION AND BLESSING

NOV 29, 2009

St Vitus Parish will officially dedicate and bless its restored historic church Holtkamp organ on Nov. 29, 2009 (Sunday) with an all parish Mass for parishioners, friends and benefactors of the current church organ project followed by an appreciation brunch for all parish volunteers and benefactors of parish building fund, including the organ project, in the parish auditorium. The brunch will be by invitation only. The church organ is scheduled to be operational by mid-Oct 2009.

The organ restoration work includes repairing of the console, refurbishing chests, new keyboards, cleaning and repairing of over 900 wooden and metal pipes, new digital wiring, new electrical control boards, and new leather work for the 900 + “stops.” Pedals that had been previously removed have been restored. Choir loft floors were stripped with a new stain and polyurethane applied. Additional new lighting has been installed with upgraded electrical wiring to handle current and future needs. The blower room had a total upgrade with a new blower (machine that provides air power for the organ) installed, new motor, soundproofing and insulation, new lighting and upgraded wiring, and a ceiling enclosure with circulating fan to improve air circulation. The total cost is projected at $294,000 with approximately $20,000 remaining to be raised for this project.

The Holtkamp Organ Co., Cleveland, Ohio, is performing the restoration work. The company has it s founding in 1855 when G.F. Votteler established a shop to manufacture organs in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1903, the first of the Holtkamps, Herman Heinrich, came to join then retiring Henry Votteler. The company was known then as "Votteler Holtkamp Sparling Company." By 1951 the name became The Holtkamp Organ Company. Chris Holtkamp is the fourth generation Holtkamp engaged in construction and restoration of organs. The Holtkamp Organ Co was the company that built St. Vitus Church organ in 1932.

An Ad Hoc Committee was formed by the parish for this project. Members include Father Joseph Boznar, pastor, Mark Celestina, R. Frank Coffelt, Joseph Futey, Stane Kuhar, and John Srsen. Contact Mr. Kuhar at (216) 361-1444 for additional information.

The Polka Hall of Fame at 216-261-3263 Cleveland's best ? Readers tell us about their favorite things between sliced bread by Joe Crea / Food and Restaurants Editor Thursday September 17, 2009, 12:00 PM

John Kuntz, The Plain DealerThe Big Popper at Melt in Lakewood was on our list of favorite . Readers wrote in to tell us about their favorites, too. Certain issues conjure powerful passions: religion ... politics ... sandwiches ... Let's skip matters of church and state and get right down to the meat of the matter. My recent compilation of some of the tastiest sandwiches I found around Northeast Ohio (big emphasis on "some") evoked strong reaction from readers. Many agreed with the dozen places I spotlighted. Others were scandalized, even taking the omission of their favorite as a personal affront. "I mean, how could you possibly overlook . . ." SLYMAN'S topped that list. "I eat a lot, but trust me -- you're missin' Slyman's, big guy," observed one wag. That, despite the fact that I specifically cited Slyman's landmark status in the windup to my thumbs up for TAL'S (5747 Ridge Road, Parma; 440-885-0905). And despite the fact that The Plain Dealer has, justifiably, honored Slyman's (3106 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland; 216-621-3760) with roughly 20 references over the past 4½ years (not counting regular listings). Anyway, a list of 12 places does not provide a definitive list of the Cleveland's most dazzling sandwich stops. Nor does this compilation of reader's recommendations. But if you're hungry for more nosh-between-slices, here are several more. "You should try DAGWOOD'S SANDWICH SHOP. Try the sandwich named after the shop, the Dagwood, or my favorite, 'The Black Angus Steak.' And, have you ever tried the muffaletta from ANTONIO'S? It is one great sandwich. Try it at any of the Antonio's in the area." (Dagwood's, 5310 State Road, Parma; 216-398-5200. Antonio's, several locations.) -- Terry Tomasch "I often hire caterers, sometimes for several days in succession, when I have to feed big, hungry guys on a film crew. We always have a sandwich meal at one point or another and I consistently get rave reviews from a varied crowd for the sandwiches from LA BODEGA in Tremont. Just last week, I fed about 40 people from La Bodega and the lunch discussion was a spirited 'which one did you try?' and on and on. And this included some crew members from France and Switzerland (read with accent: 'ah, yes, this tuna!') who, not surprisingly, seem to be selective about their food." (La Bodega, 869 Jefferson Ave., Cleveland; 216-621- 7075.) -- Kate O'Neil "One of the best sandwiches is PIER W'S . Big chunks of lobster on a salted butter roll make you think you're in Maine." (Pier W, 12700 Lake Ave., at Winton Place, Lakewood; 216-228-2250.) -- Gaile Donatelli "Chalkboards so covered with sandwiches choices there is a need to be categorized by meat leave no shortage of favorites for everyone. That's GOURMAND'S. My preference is the Skinny Wrap. With the perfect balance of turkey, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, alfalfa sprouts and banana pepper rings in a sun-dried tomato wrap, I leave satisfied with no feelings of guilt." (Gourmand's, 5345 Canal Road, Valley View; 216-328-0942.) -- Wendy M. Tyler "The Sicilian Sub at SHARPY'S SUB in Lyndhurst has salami, provolone and ; generous portion of lettuce, tomatoes, onion toasted to perfection, with their own special blend of Italian oil . . . They have several other subs/sandwiches I would recommend. The , which comes with a special barbecue sauce (one of the best I have had), fries and coleslaw. Also, the Steak Supreme, which has steak, cheese, raw onion, lettuce, tomatoes and a special creamy Italian sauce." (Sharpy's, 5720 Mayfield Road, Lyndhurst; 440-461-2323.) -- Barbara Depasquale "The bratwurst sandwiches at the West Side Market on West 25th Street [FRANK'S BRATWURST STAND]. I bet they sell more sandwiches in a day than any of those other restaurants." (Frank's, West Side Market, Stands G-3, H-3; 216-344-2180.) -- Steven Guzman. "The best sandwich in taste and value is the 'Slovenian " at RADDELL'S SAUSAGE SHOP. They also serve homemade brats, homemade hot dogs and other sausage sandwiches. They serve lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m." Monday through Saturday." (Raddell's, 478 East 152nd St., Cleveland; 216-486-1944.) -- Ecllector "L'ALBATROS BRASSERIE'S takes me back to Paris. Thick, tender ham and gooey cheese, with a velvety bechamel sauce generously covering the whole affair." (L'Albatros, 11401 Bellflower Road, Cleveland; 216-791-7880.) -- Ashley Nguyen "Let's face it, TOMMY'S must be doing something right to be open for over 37 years. Quite frankly, they come no better as a person than Tommy Fello . . . My personal favorite at Tommys [is the] MR 3: Spinach pie with falafel, baba, curry powder, mushrooms, sesame sauce and cheese. For me, it's the multiple exotic food flavors and unique combinations that make this sandwich a delight in every bite!" (Tommy's, 1824 Coventry Road, Cleveland Heights; 216-321-7757) -- Steve Presser "For my money, the 'Godfather' sub from DIBELLA'S OLD-FASHIONED SUBMARINES in Harvard Park or a good old fashioned Turkey from any PANINI'S are the best sandwiches around." (DiBella's, 4025 Richmond Road, Warrensville Heights; 216-378-0783. Panini's, several locations.) -- Len Fill "There is a terrific restaurant, GOODMAN'S, a very small shop in the shopping center at Pearl and Brookpark roads. Their corn beef and pastrami sandwiches are out of this world. Have been at this location forever." (Goodman's Sandwich Inn, 5164 Pearl Road, in the Pearl Brook Shopping Center, Cleveland, 216-398-6885.) -- Dee "I was wondering if you ever went to JOE'S FINE DELI & RESTAURANT on Hilliard Road in Rocky River. They have a sandwich so big you can hardly get your mouth opened to take a bite, and it is delicious, for $7.25. It is really a great restaurant and plenty of food for the money." (Joe's, 19215 Hilliard Blvd., Rocky River; 440-333-7890.) -- Marilyn Borros "VINCENZA'S, in downtown Cleveland, in an arcade. Our favorite is the Leave It to Us. This sandwich is a whole meal full of all things Italian -- a must try." (Vincenza's Pizza and Pasta, 603 Prospect Ave.; 216-241-8382.) -- Sylvia Pointer "At MAMA JO'S PIZZA & WINGS in Solon, this pizza shop's hidden treasure is their Deluxe sub sandwich (Italian). It's our family's favorite for 20-plus years. Outstanding! I want one right now!" (Mama Jo's, 32975 Aurora Road, Solon; 440-248-6753.) -- T. Lanse You did not mention my favorite: THE CORNED BEEF CAFE. They have the best corned beef on the West Side, and what makes it even better is the price: $5.99! Their Reubens are wonderful, too." (Corned Beef Cafe, 9296 Broadview Road, Broadview Heights; 440-526- 3856.) -- Erica Link "My favorite sandwich is the Melt at the CHICAGO DELI, located across from the Cleveland Clinic on Euclid Avenue." (Chicago Deli, 9601 Euclid Ave., Cleveland; 216- 229-3354.) -- Gwen Williamson "At CORKY & LENNY'S, the Beef & Latkas -- corned beef stacked high on potato pancakes with applesauce and/or sour cream. I grew up on these, and visit Corky's at least once every time I return to Cleveland to visit family!" (Corky & Lenny's, 27091 Chagrin Blvd., Woodmere; 216-464-3838). -- Ed Zell, San Diego, Calif. "Go over to LATITUDE 41 N. Yummmm, the Sicilian Latitude Attitude -- ham, pepperoni, salami, onion and vinaigrette dressing with melted mozzarella and provolone, stuffed in pizza dough that's flipped-over and baked. Served with Lat 41 N fries and coleslaw. Now this is all I'm going to be thinking about all day! Thanks!" (Latitude 41 N, 5712 Detroit Ave., Cleveland; 216-961-0000).-- Moira Nash "Want a great ? MEZZA MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE on Center Ridge Road in Westlake has it. Beef/lamb or chicken, both tops. The family is Egyptian, and their seasoning and sauce are authentic." (Mezza, 24743 Center Ridge Road, Westlake; 440-892- 2220.) -- Joe Gardewin "How about a delicious homemade Sicilian meatball sub! Bite into a mouthwatering sandwich laced with mozzarella cheese and fresh basil served on a toasted hoagie roll, at MUSKETEERS BAR & GRILL." (Musketeers, 3027 Brecksville Road, Richfield; 330-659- 4111). -- Mary Colavas "My favorite sandwich in Cleveland is the Spanish Sausage/ChoriPan (Spanish sausage, ham, Swiss cheese, garlic mayo, lettuce and tomato -- served warm and on their French/Caribbean bread) at LELOLAI, found near the West Side Market. Second favorite is a big old corned beef sandwich at DANNY'S DELI (East 17th) -- better than Slyman's!" (Lelolai, 1889 West 25th St., Cleveland; 216-771-9956, lelolaibakery.com. Danny's, 1658 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland; 216-696-1761). -- Carole Roskilly "Hands down, the greatest sandwich is the Veggie Supreme (HOT) from GIUSEPPE'S PIZZA & SUBS on Mayfield Road. They bake the sandwich in the pizza oven which makes the outside of the sandwich crispy while the inside has a great selection of veggies, cheese and dressing. Outstanding!" (Giuseppe's, 5848 Mayfield Road, Mayfield Heights; 440-449- 0626. Other locations.) -- Art Rosenfeld "The best sandwich on the East Side of town is at FERRARA'S, located on Mayfield Road between Brainard and Lander. You must order the cold-cut sub with hot peppers, dipped. The sandwich is served on a homemade Italian roll with capicolla, salami and ham, provolone cheese and hot peppers. Just ask your server to dip the bun in the pepper juice. All for $4.25." (Ferrara's Imported Food, 5750 Mayfield Road, Mayfield Heights; 440-442- 3700.) -- Kevin L. Lenson

The Ljubljana Marathon in Slovenia Attracts Foreign Runners Too

In October the capital city of Slovenia will once again be a marathon city. At this running event, which sees a growing number of hardy local and foreign runners every year (more than 13,000 last year!), you can take part in a classic marathon or a half marathon or choose a 10.5-km fun run. Entries are open until 20 October.

The Ljubljana Marathon, whose route passes through the Old Town and the green outskirts of the city, is a challenging experience both for competitors and for the numerous spectators lining the route. This major international running event, this year in its 14th edition, will take place on Sunday 25 October.

The day before the marathon, when many runners will be gathering their strength at ‘pasta banquets’, water sports enthusiasts will be putting themselves to the test in the 3rd international kayaking marathon. Kayakers and canoeists will test their strength on various courses on the river Ljubljanica, among the bridges of the city centre. The longest course measures almost 20 kilometres, while recreational canoeists can choose between a 5-km course and a 9- km course. Participants in previous marathons on the Ljubljanica have included Photo from the 2008 Marathon.
