  • Sebastiano Del Piombo and His Collaboration with Michelangelo: Distance and Proximity to the Divine in Catholic Reformation Rome
SEBASTIANO DEL PIOMBO AND HIS COLLABORATION WITH MICHELANGELO: DISTANCE AND PROXIMITY TO THE DIVINE IN CATHOLIC REFORMATION ROME by Marsha Libina A dissertation submitted to the Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland April, 2015 © 2015 Marsha Libina All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation is structured around seven paintings that mark decisive moments in Sebastiano del Piombo’s Roman career (1511-47) and his collaboration with Michelangelo. Scholarship on Sebastiano’s collaborative works with Michelangelo typically concentrates on the artists’ division of labor and explains the works as a reconciliation of Venetian colorito (coloring) and Tuscan disegno (design). Consequently, discourses of interregional rivalry, center and periphery, and the normativity of the Roman High Renaissance become the overriding terms in which Sebastiano’s work is discussed. What has been overlooked is Sebastiano’s own visual intelligence, his active rather than passive use of Michelangelo’s skills, and the novelty of his works, made in response to reform currents of the early sixteenth century. This study investigates the significance behind Sebastiano’s repeating, slowing down, and narrowing in on the figure of Christ in his Roman works. The dissertation begins by addressing Sebastiano’s use of Michelangelo’s drawings as catalysts for his own inventions, demonstrating his investment in collaboration and strategies of citation as tools for artistic image-making. Focusing on Sebastiano’s reinvention of his partner’s drawings, it then looks at the ways in which the artist engaged with the central debates of the Catholic Reformation – debates on the Church’s mediation of the divine, the role of the individual in the path to personal salvation, and the increasingly problematic distance between the layperson and God.

  • Hebrew, Hieroglyphs, and the Secrets of Divine Wisdom in Ludovico Mazzolino's Devotional Paintings
-5 Hebrew, Hieroglyphs, and the Secrets of Divine Wisdom in Ludovico Mazzolino's Devotional Paintings Giancarlo Fiorenza ecrecy operated on many levels within Renaissance court society. At Ferrara, the mecha nisms of secrecy helped shape and define the rule of Alfonso I d'Este (1476-1534; duke S from 1505). His biographer, Paolo Giovio, observed that the duke frequently retreated to a secret room ("stanza secreta") in the Ferrarese castle, which was set up like a workshop ("bot tega"), in order to create a variety of decorative and sculpted objects, activities he performed to relax his spirit and escape idleness ("per fuggire l'otio") .1 Within the se private chambers- rooms not so much hidden as separated from the common areas and reserved for the duke-Alfonso combined solitude with industry, and leisure with sprezzatura, leaving his subjects to marvel at the virtuosity fueling princely performance.2 Visitors granted access to these spaces bore witness to the practice of seclusion as an agent of production and authority, an ideology that informs other works of art celebrating the duke: from the inscriptions invoking quies and solus on Antonio Lombardo's marble reliefs (ca. 1508), once displayed in the private suite ofrooms in the ducal resi dence known as the camerini d'alabastro (possibly near the stanz a secreta mentioned above),3 to Mercury's gesture of silence in Dosso Dossi's Jupiter Painting Butterflies (ca. 1524; National Art Collection, Wawel Royal Castle, Kark6w) (fig. 5.1), executed most likely for the Villa Belvedere, a I. V L Una proposta per Mazzolino giovane: il San Rocco della Pinacoteca Nazionale di Ferrara* A: The attribution proposed in this paper attempts to add a new piece to the recon- struction of the early production of the Ferrarese painter Ludovico Mazzolino (circa – circa /), often coincident with the commission of works intended for public fruition, usually of a large format. The few figurative testimonies that remain from this period – prior to of the first work dated with certainty, the Berlin Triptych – have focused the attention of critics on the subse- quent, more recognizable, production of mostly small-format paintings, while it remains un- certain the identification of the oldest proofs of the artist.
