    Botanic Gardens and the Aesthetics of Artifice Cairns Craig In 1651 Andrew Balfour, later one of the founders of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden, visited Blois in France, where the physic garden developed by Robert Morison, then physician to the Duc d’Orléans, had become famous for its col- lection of plants that could be exploited for medicinal purposes. Morison, from Aberdeen, had left Scotland after being wounded fighting on the Royalist side against Cromwell’s forces in the battle of the Bridge of Dee in 1639. Having, like many other royalist exiles, taken up residence in France, he obtained a doctorate in medicine at Angers and went on to study botany in Paris with Vespasian Robin, then prominent in the introduction of North American plants into European horticulture. Balfour’s meeting with Morison was to lead to a lifelong friendship in which each supported the other’s botanical studies. Morison returned to Britain with Charles II in 1660, to become the King’s physician and subsequently Professor of Botany at Oxford; Balfour, having developed a reputation as a doctor first in St Andrews and then in Edinburgh, extended his medical practice by establishing, along with his cousin Robert Sibbald, who had also trained in France, a ‘physic garden’ to emulate those on the Continent, many of which Balfour had visited while on a ‘grand tour’ with the young Earl of Rochester during the years 1661–4. Balfour and Sibbald’s physic garden was transformed into a botanic garden after the unexpected death in 1671 of one of Balfour’s protégés, Patrick Murray (or Morray), Baron of Livingston (or Levengstone), who had been on a tour of the gardens of France.

    For immediate release April 2, 2009 Sumptuous 18th-Century Botanical Folios by Georg Ehret On Display at The New York Botanical Garden Georg Ehret: The Greatest Botanical Artist of the 1700s April 18–July 19, 2009 An exhibition entitled Georg Ehret: The Greatest Botanical Artist of the 1700s opens on April 18 in the William D. Rondina and Giovanni Foroni LoFaro Gallery of the LuEsther T. Mertz Library at The New York Botanical Garden. The spring 2009 exhibition will explore the life and work of one of the greatest botanical illustrators of all time, Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770). This exhibition will gather together for the first time for public viewing magnificent examples of Ehret’s paintings from public and private collections, alongside his published works from the holdings of the Mertz Library. About the Exhibition Among the masterpieces on view to the public will be a copy of the only work produced and published by Georg Ehret himself, entitled Plantae et papilliones rariores and produced in London between 1748 and 1759. It is the only work for which he also did all of the engraving. Each hand-colored plate is a marvelous example of his unerring instinct for design which makes his printed works so appealing to modern eyes. Two of the most sumptuous hand-colored natural history folios ever created, Plantae selectae and Hortus nitidissimis, will also be on display. They were published by one of Ehret’s greatest patrons, Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew, a wealthy Nuremberg physician . These works showcased Ehret’s talent to a broad audience and ensured his rise to become one of the most sought-after drawing teachers of his day.

    Florals: Desire and Design Descriptive Audio Tour Stop 1: An Era Begins Welcome to Florals: Desire and Design. My name is Deborah Metsger and I am the Curator of Botany at the Royal Ontario Museum. I research and curate the ROM’s collections of plants. In this exhibition I use my knowledge of botany and botanical history along with my skills in identifying plants and flowers to examine the Museum’s textile collection of Indian painted cottons, also known as chintz. This exhibition space is long and narrow. The show begins with a case of three botanical books from the 1700s. Each book is opened to a detailed botanical illustration that was engraved and then hand-painted. Next, four beautiful Indian painted cotton wall hangings line the two long walls of the space. These large textiles are more than 2 metres wide and 3 metres tall, extending from the floor to the ceiling. In the centre of the space are three luxurious fashion pieces that were worn by wealthy people of high standing and taste. At the far end of the exhibition space, are two ceramic pieces and a framed botanical illustration. Every museum object is covered with different designs of plants and flowers. The wall hangings and costume pieces in this exhibition were exported from India to Europe in the 1700s. This was a time when Europeans’ global trade and imperial ambitions brought an influx of novel objects. This included not only exciting luxury goods and artistic styles, but also plants. Europeans were fascinated by the new kinds of plants that were brought to their continent from around the globe.

Jarvis Department of Life Sciences, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD, U.K. [email protected] ABSTRACT. The Herbarium Amboinense (1741–1750) and the supplementary Herbarii Amboinensis Auctuarium (1755) of Georg Eberhard Rumpf (Rumphius) (1627–1702) provided detailed descriptions and illustrations of the plants of the island of Ambon, then a Dutch colony in the Maluku Islands (Moluccas) of Indonesia. The initial work, published in six volumes, contained a great deal of new botanical, medicinal and ethnographical information from a part of the world then little-known. Published in the Netherlands long after Rumphius’ death by the Director of the Amsterdam Botanic Garden, Johannes Burman, the work appeared prior to Carl Linnaeus’ Species Plantarum (1753) in which the consistent use of binomial names was introduced. However, in that work, Linnaeus referred to only a handful of Rumphius’ species accounts. More detailed studies by Linnaeus of Rumphius’ work soon followed, notably in the dissertation Herbarium Amboinense (May 1754; November 1759). In all, only about 100 of the nearly 700 taxa illustrated by Rumphius were referred to by Linnaeus in his various publications, though many of those that were cited serve as nomenclatural types for their corresponding Linnaean binomials. The reasons for Linnaeus’ apparent neglect of such an important source of novel information are explored. Keywords. However, so far little attention has been paid to the question how this beautiful colouring was achieved. At a case study of the eighteenth-century Nuremberg doctor and botanist Christoph Jacob Trew the process of how illustrations were hand-coloured, who were involved in this work and how the colouring was supervised and evaluated is reconstructed, mostly based on Trew’s correspondence with the engraver and publisher of his books, Johann Jacob Haid in Augsburg. Furthermore, the question of standardising colours, their uses and their recipes is discussed at two examples of the same time period: the colour charts of the Bauer brothers, arguably the most renowned botanical draughtsmen of the period, and the colour tables by the Regensburg naturalist Jacob Christian Schaeffer. Hand-colouring botanical illustrations, it is argued, was far from a straightforward task but confronted botanists and their employees with a plethora of practical and methodological problems, to which different solutions were developed in the course of time. Analysing these problems and solutions reveals some new and interesting aspects of the practices of eighteenth-century botany and of the production of scientific illustrations in general.
