Men’s All-Time World Performers-Performances Rankings Page 1 of 195 100 METER BACKSTROKE Top 5968 Performances 51.94** Aaron Peirsol, USA/Texas U.S. Nationals/WCTs Indianapolis 07-08-09 (Splits: 25.35, 51.94 [26.56]. (Note: sixth 100 back world-record of career, most by an American. East Germany’s Roland Matthes has most all-time with nine. (Note: second global-standard by Peirsol @ IUPI Natatorium. He clocked 53.17 April 2, 2005 during U.S. Nationals/ WCTs that broke his own 53.45 from previous summer’s Olympics in Athens. Peirsol only swimmer to set a 100 back wr @ Indy and first American to do so on U.S. soil since former Harvard Olympian David Berkoff swam a 54.91 to win the U.S. Olympics Trials title in Austin [August, 1988]. (Note: 50 split fastest all-time en route to a world-record. (Note: Peirsol has now held wr continuously for almost nine years [since 2K4 Olympics], longer than any other American. East Germany’s Roland Matthes has held the record the longest, from September of 1967 [when he swam [58.4] to July of ’76 when USA’s John Naber finally broke his 56.30 from the Munich Olympics four years earlier. The great American Adolph Kiefer actually held the world-record longer – from 10/20/35 until 06/23/1948 -- but quite likely swam in many different size pools [55 yards/50 meters/etc.] when he set his records and FINA now recognizes swims made only in 50 meter pools and has done so from 05/01/57 onward.) (Note: Peirsol first man under 53.0 [52.98 @ 2007 World Championships] and first under 52.0.) (Note: permanently hung up his “Speedo” in spring of 2K11.) 52.08# Matt Grevers, USA/Northwestern U.S. -
