News Bulletin

John 21 —Peter & Us 21 After this, revealed Himself again to His disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. p He revealed Himself in this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thom- as (called “Twin”), Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 “I’m going fish- 1. Getting it wrong ing,” Simon Peter said to them. “We’re coming with you,” they told him. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 When daybreak came, Jesus stood on the shore. However, the disciples did not know it was Jesus. 5 “Men,” Jesus called to them, “you don’t have any fish, do you?” “No,” they answered. 6 “Cast the net on the right side of the boat,” He told them, “and you’ll find some.” So they did, and they were unable to haul it in because of the large number of fish. 7 Therefore the , the one Jesus loved, said to Peter, “It is !” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer garment around him (for he was stripped) and plunged into the sea. 8 But since they were not far from land (about 100 yards c away), the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish. 9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. 10 “Bring some of the fish 2. Getting it right you’ve just caught,” Jesus told them. 11 So Simon Peter got up and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish—153 of them. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 “Come and have break- fast,” Jesus told them. None of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?” because they knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time g Jesus appeared i to the disciples after He was raised from the dead. Jesus’ Threefold Restoration of Peter 15 When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said to Him, “You know that I love You.” “Feed My lambs,” He told him. 16 A second time He asked him, “Simon, son of 3. Getting the program John, do you love Me?” “Yes, Lord,” he said to Him, “You know that I love You.” “Shepherd My sheep,” He told him. 17 He asked him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved that He asked him the third time, “Do you love Me?” He said, “Lord, You know everything! You know that I love You.” “Feed My sheep,” Jesus said. 18 “I assure you: When you were young, you would tie your belt and walk wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will tie you and carry you where you don’t want to go.” 19 He said this to sig- nify by what kind of death he would glorify God. y After saying this, He told him, “Follow Me!” Correcting a False Report 20 So Peter turned around and saw the disciple Jesus loved fol- John 21:19 lowing them. That disciple was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked, “Lord, who is the one that’s going to betray You?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord—what After saying this, He told Peter, “Follow Me!” about him?” 22 “If I want him to remain until I come,” Jesus an- swered, “what is that to you? As for you, follow Me.” 23 So this report spread to the brothers f that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not tell him that he would not die, but, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?” Epilogue 24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. 25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if they were written one by one, I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books that would be written. Redeemer. The bible explains that this sacrificial action of Jesus brings great honour to God. All who believe in Jesus continue to bring honour to God. But God’s patience with ongoing rebels who bring him dishonour will run out, and Jesus will soon return to eternally punish. Christians are eternally thankful to Jesus as our saviour, and strive to live rightly under him as Lord and master. The bible explains that we need supernatural help to do this. We can never be thankful enough or good enough to earn ‘saved’ status. We must be saved first, then thankfulness and obedience rightly follow. Will you accept God’s rescue plan? in Jesus right now ?

The leader of Australia’s largest Anglican Diocese, the Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Glenn Davies, has recalled the Moon Landing and its 50th anniversary, in his Easter Message this year.

Celebrations are being prepared for July when NASA will lead the anniversary of Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 team landing on the surface of the Moon in 1969.

“50 years ago, the world was looking towards space – waiting for the first moon landing.” the Archbishop said.

“At the time, US President Richard Nixon described it as ‘the greatest week in the history of the world since Crea- tion!’ The great preacher Billy Graham quickly corrected him – saying that far greater was the week of the death and .”

“If you were alive in 1969 you would remember exactly where you were when Neil Armstrong took that first ‘small step for a man and one giant leap for mankind.’ Although none of us were there when Jesus lived and died – his resurrection was so significant that we remem- ber and celebrate it every year and will continue to do so until he returns.” Dr Davies said.

“The resurrection of Jesus guarantees that no matter how far we have strayed, there is a way for us to be friends with God – and live with him forever.” NRG 2019 North Ryde Games 78 Days to go!! July 8-12 2019

If we took a closer look at Easter, what would we find – a chocolate fantasy or important history?

In the 8th Century, the English monk, Bede, spoke of how the name of the pagan goddess ‘Eostre’ was used for the ‘Easter month’. Bede’s words have long been seen as proof that Christians simply replaced existing cultural ritu- als with their own. But the problem is that there isn’t much hard evidence for the English Goddess ‘Eostre’ or her Spring pagan festival. However, there’s lots of evidence that Christians throughout Europe, from the medieval period onward, used eggs and rabbits as symbols of new life.

As for the chocolate versions, well Joseph Fry of Bristol made the first choco- late Easter egg in 1873. Ever since then Easter has been very chocolaty and run, almost entirely by the major supermarkets.

If you keep looking closely at Easter though, you’ll see that Christians all over the world have something more exciting than a weekend chocolate coma to celebrate. If you look really closely then you’ll see that, from the earliest times, Christians wanted an annual celebration at the time of the Jewish feast called ‘Passover’ (usually in April) because that’s when Jesus was executed.

But why would Christians celebrate the execution of a man? Because, para- doxically, Jesus’s death means life! Jesus is God’s son, sent to earth to point us back to Him… sent to live as an example… sent to offer his life so that our sin might be cancelled.

Yet Christians don’t just focus on Jesus’s death. The climax of the Easter story comes two days after Good Friday and Jesus’s execution. On the third day Jesus was resurrected from death. His tomb, which had been sealed, was now empty. Since then, people everywhere have had reason to hope be- cause, if Jesus can be resurrected, then so can we.

There’s an account in the Bible of a man called Paul who was opposed to Christians and Jesus. But Paul became both a believer and a Christian lead- er. Here’s a small part of a letter he wrote to Greek Christians in the city of Corinth.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures

So, this Easter – as you spike your blood sugar on the finest cocoa confec- tions, remember why Easter is so sweet. Remember the hope that Jesus has given you and thank him.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for chocolate. But thank you much more for the gift of Jesus and the new life he brings. This week at St John’s
