Our passion is for souls. We want to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with everyone.

We do not feel that the Church of England acting alone can change 2000 years of tradition regarding the priesthood or episcopate by admitting women to either order. Thus, our bishop is one who does not ordain nor would he consecrate women.

This is known as ‘Resolution C’, and in the Diocese of London – under a particular local arrangement known as the ‘London Plan’ – places the parish concerned under the pastoral and sacramental care of the Bishop of Fulham.

A range of visiting preachers challenged worshippers each Sunday during the autumn. Fr Alan Brown Ob.CR led a PCC day at the beginning of September and left everyone with a challenging sermon the following Sunday. He encouraged the PCC to spend money! Other visiting preachers included Fr Bill Scott, The Sub Dean of The Chapels Royal; Fr Alexander McGregor from Church House Westminster and St Mary’s Bourne Street and Bishop Robert Ladds, Assistant Bishop of London who preached a Marian sermon, bringing the 40 hours devotion to an end. St Mary’s was also pleased to welcome Canon Jonathan Goodall, Personal Chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury; Fr David Clues (before he left St. Mary’s, Willesden to become Vicar of St Bartholomew’s Brighton); Fr Harri Williams, who journeyed up from Pembrokeshire to celebrate Christ the King. The final guest preacher for the 75th season was the , The Ven Douglas McKittrick. The home team Fr Edward, Fr John and Fr Malcolm were also in evidence in the pulpit. Having visitors is always interesting…a fresh voice...new ideas and always a challenge. St Mary’s looks forward to welcoming more visitors in 2012. Many people find the Bible Alive! and the Lent/Advent Walk With Me daily readings very helpful as a focus for meditation and prayer. Numbers attending Morning Prayer have increased in the last months.

Worship & sacramental care At the heart of the Christian life is the daily office of Morning and Evening and Night prayer. The Mass is the daily encounter with the gift of Jesus on Calvary, in the Resurrection and His DAILY NOW to us. The Mass is offered daily and the Office said. The Day of Resurrection is the first call on the Christian’s commitment to worship, gathered with others around the Altar. The Parish Mass is the focus for all at St Mary’s. Sunday communicants average 70 (2010: 70) . 3 4 At Easter 2011 there were 172 (2010: 176) and at Christmass some 150 (2010: 107) made their communion. Numbers at the Daily Mass are increasing slowly, with up to 25 on a Wednesday and 15 on a Friday. A sung evening Mass on major Saints Days or Feasts has also been re- introduced. These attract around 25 – 30. Once a month a prayer group is held. This is a vital part of parish life. Numbers attending are small, but the power and efficacy of prayer is very real. Evening Prayer and Benediction is held on the first Sunday of the month. This combines with the devotion of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament locally. Each week the Rosary is said. Two sessions of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament are offered; for half an hour on a Tuesday evening and an hour on a Saturday morning. Other devotions also occur. Those unable to come to Mass receive the Blessed Sacrament in their homes or nursing homes. Those in hospital are supported sacramentally and pastorally by the hospital chaplains and parish clergy. Nine members of the congregation

are licensed as Eucharistic ministers. During 2012 teaching about the Sacrament of Reconciliation [which is always available] will take place. During 2011 there were 9 Baptisms (2010: 4), no Confirmations (2010: 2), no Weddings (2010: 2). 4 Funerals in church, 2 being full requiems (2010: 8)

Pastoral & social care The usual events took place throughout the Year: The New Year’s Day lunch; The Parish Easter Feast after the Vigil and a Lent lunch in support of the work of the Additional Curates’ Society. A number of social events followed on from the Induction including Father John’s 50th Jubilee; the Bishop of London’s visit; Harvest Thanksgiving and the 75th Anniversary of Consecration Mass. The Ladies’ Social Group meets regularly, as does ‘The Merry Widowers’ group. Lookout Leaders keep in touch with those assigned to them and are a conduit for pastoral care and for keeping the clergy advised of any need.

Ministry to Children and Young People Miss Johnette Clarke chairs the Children & Youth Ministry sub committee. Mr Mike Still became the Parish Children’s Advocate [Parish Child Protection named person] in 2011. In line with diocesan policy, all those working with children and young people are required to hold an enhanced CRB disclosure. When not involved in serving teams, youngsters leave Mass to return at the offertory, having had their own liturgy. In November, five young people with adults joined the Walsingham pilgrimage. This was a worthwhile event which was much enjoyed by the young people. On the eve of Christ The King, Miss Clare Rabjohns held an afternoon workshop with our younger people which was very successful. A crib service was held on Christmass Eve.

The PCC sponsors the 4th Kenton (St Mary’s) Scout Group. Fr. Edward has become involved with the committee and chairs it. St Mary’s has allocated £100 to a junior leader from 4th Kenton who is going on a World Challenge expedition to S Africa in 2012. Whilst the majority of the Scouts are Roman Catholic, this is a valuable link for the parish. The Scouts visited St. Mary’s and attended mass on 29th November.

Fr Edward has been appointed padre to the 101st Kenton and Kingsbury Air Training Corps Squadron. This provides opportunity to work alongside teenagers from the area. Fr Edward was previously a padre to Walsall ATC and was also padre to the Royal British Legion. The ATC joined the congregation for the Mass on Remembrance Sunday and representatives were at the Mass on 3rd December. This is another valuable link, which shows support for the junior RAF.

Page 14 Page 7

Evangelization & Outreach The Parish has a population of 32,000; 60% of whom are Hindu. Whilst there are also Jewish and Muslim residents, there are still a number who would claim some vague Christian allegiance. The weekly pew sheet and Magazine ‘The Record’ are displayed publically. The pew sheet and ‘Forward!’ sheet are also distributed electronically to those on the Parish’s e-mail directory. Advertisements were placed in the local press advertising the Christmass services and flyers were distributed. The Parish website had some 3,500 hits during 2011, and is in many ways the ‘front door’ of the church. It is an excellent site and is kept right up to date. In addition to background information, it also contains the diary of services and events. Thanks to Mr Nicholas Royle our web designer and webmaster.

Ecumenical links The long-standing links with the local Greek Orthodox Church of St Panteleimon continue. The consecration of the Basilica in 2012 is a much anticipated event. Fr Edward and Fr Anastasios are old friends, so now there is a very personal link with the community as well. As a member of the Kenton Group of Churches St Mary’s maintains relationships with the local Christian Community. Thanks to our representative Miss Valerie Southwood for her untiring work with this group. A warm welcome is extended to the new minister at Kenton Baptist Church, the Rev’d Steve Cocrayne. Fr Edward and Trish Royle represented St Mary’s at the rededication of All Saints Catholic Church on the eve of All Saints Day, when the Archbishop of Westminster was the principal celebrant.

Electoral roll At the time of the Annual Church Parochial Meeting in April there were 97 (2010: 97) people on the Electoral Roll of whom 47 (2010: 45) were not resident in the Parish.

Mission Action Plan The Parish Mission Action Plan was reviewed in 2011 [before the interviews for the Incumbent] and will be reviewed against ongoing developments during 2012.

Summary of the work of the PCC during the year During 2011, the full PCC met on 11 occasions, which included 3 extraordinary meetings; and the Section 12 Meeting in January. The average attendance was 73% (2010: 85%). The Standing Committee met between meetings and reports of its deliberations were received by the full PCC and discussed where necessary.
