MN PRODUCTION NEWS Minneapolis-based production company Werc Werk Works (headed by Elizabeth Redleaf and Christine Walker) premiered its first film LIFE DURING WARTIME on September 3rd at the 66th Venice International Film LIFE DURING WARTIME, directed by Festival.The film was written and Todd Solondz, won Best Screenplay directed by Todd Solondz as a sequel to at the Venice Int'l Film Festival. his film HAPPINESS (1998) and stars Ally Sheedy, Allison Janney and Shirley Henderson. Solondz won an "Osella" for Best Screenplay at the festival. The film had its North American premiere on September 14th at the Toronto International Film Festival. Locations in Minnesota and Illinois are under consideration. The drama STUCK BETWEEN STATIONS begins shooting in the Twin Cities on October 2nd. The film is directed and produced by filmmaker Brady Kiernan and co-written by Minneapolis natives Sam Rosen and Nat Bennett. Rosen will also star in the film, which is about former high school classmates who reunite by chance during a chaotic night in Minneapolis. Josh Hartnett and Michael Imperioli (THE SOPRANOS) are part of the supporting cast. Minnesota-made movies hit the big screen this month. Following a red-carpet premiere at the State Theatre in Minneapolis on Thursday, October 1st, the comedy NOBODY, directed by Rob Perez and starring Sam Rosen, will play at Kerasotes Block E Stadium Theatre beginning Friday, October 2nd. Also opening on October 2nd is the latest Coen Brothers feature A SERIOUS MAN (filmed entirely in the Twin Cities) at the Uptown Theatre in Minneapolis. Expect a packed house! And the local juggernaut INTO TEMPTATION, written and directed by Patrick Coyle, enters its fifth week playing at The Lagoon Cinema in Minneapolis. "Ana's Playground", a short film written and directed by Eric Howell, won "Best Short Film" and "Best of Fest" at the inaugural Norwich Film Festival in Norwich, England. The short went on to make its official world debut at the Calgary International Film Festival at the Globe Theatre on Friday, September 25th as part of the festival's "Anything but Ordinary" collection of internationally produced short films. Set in a non-specific, war-torn country, Ana's Playground is an examination of children living and dying in a world of armed combat. The film features an all-Minnesotan cast and producers Marsha Trainer and Jillian Nodland worked hard to pull together and organize resources to shoot the film in one cold November week in the Twin Cities. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Dedicated to the work of emerging, innovative filmmakers, Good Machine has produced or co-produced films by, among others, Ang Lee, Todd Solondz, Nicole Holofcener, Ed Burns, Cheryl Dunye and Hal Hartley. Beginning with Tui Shou (Pushing Hands) (1992), the first collaboration between Good Machine and director Ang Lee, The Museum of Modern Art presents eight feature films and five shorts from February 13 through 23, 2001 at the Roy and Niuta Titus Theatre 1. Bergland, Buckle, Thomas-Buckle Interrogating Marriage December 11, 2007 Postmodern Love and Traditional Marriage in Todd Solondz’s Happiness A woman in her mid-thirties dressed conservative yet casual clothing stands in her immaculate kitchen giving her younger sister, who has just ended a relationship with ‘the wrong guy,’ a pep-talk. Well, not so much a pep-talk as smug “I am better than you” faux-sympathy. The woman with the showroom kitchen is clearly married to a ‘good man’; a breadwinner who has afforded her the luxury to stay home, minding the 2.5 children and sipping midday tea with her emotionally ailing sister. No, this is not Leave it to Beaver or any of the other fine programming from the morally uplifting period of television that lasted from the late 1950s to the early 60s. This scene is not from the period before bra burning or Roe v. Wade. Rather, this idealized image of married and familial life is from independent filmmaker Todd Solondz’s 1998 film Happiness. Solondz’s sardonic portrayal of the intimate and familial relations of three New Jersey sisters and their retired parents asks the viewer to question how marriage and the traditional family model maintain a stronghold on American life in the face of changing gender roles, the prevalence of divorce, and an increasing number of unconventional family types. Through his use of characters that can easily be read as ‘types’ of people, Solondz presents a realistic narrative of contemporary relations between individuals.
