Wellingborough

Chamber News Early Summer 2012

The range of grog was pretty good too, with many local Waendel Beer Festival breweries benefitting from the exposure of their new ales, such as Phipps with the old recipe for Jubilee Ale, produced for the first time since prior to WW2. Potbelly of Kettering had Hop Trotter, A Limp Pig Gold and ‘Luverly Jubilee', and Nobby’s of Guilsborough sold out fast with their Biggus Dickus and T’owd Navigation. In all a great selection of fine ales chosen as always by Farmer Norton from .

It must have been because we were on sacred ground that the weather over the weekend of the Waendel Beer Festival was the best it had been for weeks, which graciously allowed our drinkers the opportunity to sit and imbibe in the sunshine. So much so that we completely sold out of ale on the Saturday night at around 11.30pm, just perfect! Our thoughts are now on our annual festival, ‘the big one’ in September (27th-29th), and if you would like to grab a part of this by either sponsoring a tub of ale or the collectors glasses or even by advertising in our full colour programme then contact Alan Piggot on 01933 624222 or email him at [email protected] and he can give you full details.

A big thank you to our sponsors prop-search.com and Discover without whose financial assistance we would not be able to run such a great festival. Friday night kicked off in the usual style with Dr Thank you again to everyone concerned and two Busker bringing his unique twist on traditional songs to charities will be benefitting from the proceeds, the Rotary our awaiting audience and the drink flowed heavily, then and the Lifeboat Appeal. again on Saturday night our 9 piece band The Skatoons took to the stage and had people dancing continuously See you in September whilst enjoying the fine ales and ciders. Two more Wellingborough Chamber Ambassadors. Pen Portrait - Greg Hill

In 2007, Greg Hill established SRE Technologies Ltd following his long term interest in naturally generated energy. His inspiration went beyond the installation of renewable technologies in education, but developed renewable energy generation with computer software/realtime web access and bringing the technology alive for schools and colleges to undertake and monitor their environmental projects.

An experienced and successful entrepreneur, he has started and built successful businesses within Northamptonshire for the last 11 years, helping many employees develop a wide range of skills in support of their goals.

Within 5 years of starting the company, Greg Hill has grown and developed SRE Technologies Ltd into becoming one of the most experienced MCS accredited installers of wind turbines and multi disciplined solar PV technologies in the UK and gained Trading Standards approval for quality and service. The company is also NICEIC approved and can undertake major electrical contracts.

Greg Hill is an ‘ex sapper’ and his experience in engineering, and ‘can do’ attitude, has meant that during its 5 years, SRE Technologies Ltd has accomplished many ‘firsts’ within the renewable energy industry; for example, SRE were the first company in the world to install a Proven 15kW Wind Turbine onto a 25M Tower. SRE also accomplished another ‘first’ when installing the CP Solar ‘In Roof’ System in 2011 and are continuing to accomplish ‘firsts’ to this day with the successful installation of the first 30kWp Renusol Industrial integrated roofing system and a 50kWp unique articulated “groundmount” system designed for uneven ground.

When Greg Hill is not heading up the company, he likes to get involved in charity events, both on his sailing boat “Blue Argolis” where he took part in ‘Sail Aid 2006’, circumnavigating the UK in just 43 days, and has completed various expeditions in the SRE Defender 110 Landrover. In 2009 Greg, his wife Sue, and two children Kate & Baz drove to the Sahara and back to raise funds for a childen’s charity. Greg also attends many fundraising events to raise the profile/funds for a charity that is also very important to him, Help for Heroes.

Pen Portrait - David O’Neil

David has lived and worked in the County for over 20 years and this has included leading many development and planning projects across Wellingborough, and he is also a Northamptonshire Ambassador.

David enables commercial economic inward investment; he supports and enables commercial and other land development and regeneration through the planning process. He undertakes economic appraisals and builds delivery partnerships. Current schemes in this County have the potential to deliver over 7,000 new jobs. David has strong active networks across the private and public sector at senior levels in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, the South- and at national level.

In his spare time, David fits in several outdoor sports, has been on arctic expeditions, designed and built the family home (wife and two daughters), is a Parish Councillor and even occasionally treads the boards!

Priorities for Wellingborough that he wants to support include strengthening the town centre offer by focusing on a distinctive offer that the market wants, and building up capacity in and around the town as more houses and more jobs means more town centre users for what is the town centre that has the best potential amongst all the county towns.

The Griffins Head

My name is Peter Stubbins and I have been ensconced at the Griffins Head as Landlord for the past four years. I also own the lease on The White Swan Inn at Holcot.

Both are great country village pubs, both free-houses serving a range of ever changing Real Ales complemented by food served seven days a week ranging from a sandwich to a full three course Sunday Luncheon.

I’ve been connected with the catering trade for over thirty years from helping my parents operate their fish & chip shop to General Manager of the Royal Hotel in Kettering and everything in between. For the last twenty years I have been leasing village pubs in Walgrave, Holcot & Mears Ashby.

I totally enjoy running village pubs, the local contact and the satisfaction is tremendous even in these very difficult trading times. I hope being part of the Chamber will aid me to meet new local contacts and hopefully put something back, locally. Please come along for a visit any time or give me a call on 01604 812945 to make a reservation, perhaps for a Sunday luncheon! You will be very welcome, your host Peter.

Please find enclosed a flyer advertising the next Chamber social event at The Griffins Head on 27th June @ 7.30pm – everyone is invited. Please pin this flyer on your internal noticeboard/intranet. Thank you.

Children Lead STEM Learning at Lab_13

Dear Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce Members,

Lab_13 is a very special science lab in Community Primary School. We are writing to tell you what Lab_13 is about and why it is so special to the students of our school, other local schools and the Northants area in general. First of all, we are the ONLY Lab_13 in Northamptonshire which makes us very special indeed. There is a network of 6 Lab_13s in the world and only 3 are in primary schools. We work to promote STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths).

The best thing about our lab is that it is run by the kids for the kids. We have a management committee of 10 and 11 year old students who make all the big decisions and control finances and budgeting. We even wrote the job description, interviewed and chose our scientist in residence who is based in Lab_13 and helps the children with their science skills. When we leave the education system we will eventually The best thing about Lab_13 in Irchester is our Question take up jobs that haven’t been invented yet. Can you Board. We invited many local business people and were fortunate to have Mr. David Cross and Mr. Alan Piggott join us. It was a huge success! We took people on a tour around the lab and the school to see how each year group from Foundation Stage to Year 6 have been answering their own questions using real scientific skills. Everyone was amazed that all of the children were learning things way above their age level!

Our next big event will be our “Chemistry at Work” day in June. We are inviting children from ten local schools to come and see how chemistry is a vital part of so many jobs and how important it is to our lives. If you know someone or a company who would like to showcase how they use chemistry in their work then please contact us!

We initially won funding from Lab_13’s founding company, Ignite Futures, for a year. Unfortunately, Ignite Futures have since gone bankrupt, and our Lab_13 is in need of serious funding. We believe that if Irchester School could keep our precious Lab_13 for a longer term of time, then we could be an inspiration to all of the other schools in the county and they could have their own Lab_13 too! And what is better for the economy than a country of scientists, inventors, engineers and entrepreneurs?

We would like to invite those interested to come and visit Lab_13 to see for themselves how important it is! You can contact us through [email protected], our blog lab13network.wordpress.com or twitter @Lab_13Irchester.

Yours sincerely, Morgan and Lewis Lab_13 Management Committee

Increase your company’s profile by supporting Young Enterprise

Increase your company’s profile by supporting Young Enterprise. In this rapidly changing global economy, it is essential for business and education to work together to ensure that today’s students have the opportunity to become tomorrow’s business leaders and enterprising professionals.

Founded in 1963 as a UK registered charity, Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading enterprise education charity and runs a range of business and enterprise education programmes for more than 290,000 young people each year, through the support of over 3,000 businesses and 11,500 volunteers.

Our growing network of national and local businesses support us by: • individual and group employee volunteering • financial support to help deliver local Young Enterprise programmes • supporting our YE awards to recognise young people’s achievements • in-kind and pro bono support • advisory and trustee board opportunities

Why get involved? Working with Young Enterprise gives you the opportunity to directly support and inspire young people in your area and empower them with the confidence, ability and ambition to succeed. Young Enterprise business supporters benefit in many ways, from the motivational and professional development rewards of employee volunteering to demonstrating their commitment to measurable and effective Corporate Social Responsibility outcomes. By supporting Young Enterprise, you can demonstrate your company’s commitment to the community and the development of business skills amongst young people.

So how can you help…? The Company Programme is one of the programmes we run. It offers students aged 15-19 the opportunity to set up and run their own real company over the course of one academic year, with the support and guidance of a business adviser from a local business.

Students elect a Board of Directors from amongst their peers, raise share capital, market and finance a real product or service of their own choice and sell it to the public.

Through participating in the Company Programme, students develop their Enterprise knowledge and understanding, and also skills and attributes in a business context.

They learn by doing, coping with a changing and evolving business, developing essential skills such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, managing risk, creativity, innovation and leadership.

The cost for each Company that takes part during the 2012-13 academic year will be £565. Could your business help to meet this cost?

Could you be a business advisor? Want to know more…?
