There was a good response to this invitation. On November 25™ the Courier reported that there were nearly 100 voices, but there were still vacancies for Tenors and Basses - this, in spile of the fact that there was already a large choir in the town known as the Tunbridge Wells Vocal Association. The performance of Brahms' Requiem took place on Wednesday, 10™ May 1905 in the Great Hall and there was a glowing report in the Courier only two days iater. -

SYMPHONY NO. 5 AS A SUMMARY OF RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS’S PHILOSOPHY OF THE ENGLISH COMPOSER by DEBORAH BOWDEN LISANO (Under the Direction of Roger Vogel) ABSTRACT Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No. 5 in D was composed between the years 1938 and 1943. The purpose of this study is to analyze Symphony No. 5 as a summary of Vaughan Williams’s philosophy of the English composer. Symphony No. 5 has been selected as the work for this study as it is, in the opinion of many, the most representative and outstanding of Vaughan Williams’s nine symphonies. Symphony No. 5 is explored in six chapters that deal with musical, social, and political influences on Vaughan Williams during and prior to the writing of Symphony No. 5; the characteristics of Vaughan Williams’s working method; Vaughan Williams’s writings as they relate to the English composer and the symphony; the manuscripts of Symphony No. 5; the dedication of Symphony No. 5 to Jean Sibelius; and an analysis of Symphony No. 5. Included in the appendices are observations regarding the premiere, the reception history, and the recorded history of Symphony No. 5, and charts outlining the major tonal/modal areas of the symphony. JOHNSON 24-BIT ....RECORDING izet lived 36 years, dying three months after the production of Carmen. Biographers recount that having walked the streets of Paris Bafter the first night his opera premiered, Bizet mourned the failure of his Carmen, so disillusioned, he retired to his home to die of a broken heart. Not quite true. Carmen received 37 performances in its first season, but did not immediately win extraordinary success, this came later. In reality, Bizet’s death came after the 33rd presentation of Carmen. He suffered from angina pectoris (a chest discomfort that occurs when the heart is not getting enough blood). Bizet died in Switzerland during such an attack. Bizet was born Alexandre César Léopold, October 25th 1838, in Paris. His godfather, disregarding the impressive appellation, called the baby “Georges”, and Georges Bizet he was from that time forth. George’s father was a teacher of singing. His mother was a pianist. By four, Georges was showing such an acute response to music that his mother began teaching him notes along with his ABC’s. Georges enjoyed the game, and before long, was singing and playing the piano. It was clear to his parents that he had outgrown home instruction. However, the Paris Conservatoire did not accept children. Nevertheless, his father convinced Conservatoire officials to audition Georges. Playing the piano well, sight-reading with ease, and naming any chord or interval, he astonished the officials. Within weeks Georges was admitted.
