At the 55th Directing Council, Member States of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) adopted the Framework of Engagement with non-State Actors (FENSA) via Resolution CD55.R3 (September 2016). Through this resolution, the PAHO Member States specifically replaced the Principles Governing Relations between the Pan American Health Organization and Nongovernmental Organizations with FENSA. They also requested the Director of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau (“the Bureau”) to implement FENSA in a manner consistent with PAHO’s constitutional legal framework and to report annually to the Executive Committee through its Subcommittee on Program, Budget, and Administration (SPBA). 2. “Official relations” is a privilege that the Executive Committee may grant to nongovernmental organizations, international business associations, and philanthropic foundations that have had, and continue to have, sustained and systematic engagement with PAHO that is assessed by both parties as being mutually beneficial. Entities in official relations with PAHO should be regional in membership and/or scope and should have a constitution or similar basic document, an established headquarters, a governing body, and an administrative structure. 3. Official relations are based on a three-year plan for collaboration with PAHO that has been developed and agreed on jointly by the non-State actor and PAHO. The three-year plan is structured in accordance with the PAHO Strategic Plan and cannot be primarily of a commercial or for-profit nature. -

During this field visit, a 40 year old HIV seropositive female, who worked as an outreach worker in one of the drug de-addiction centres, complained of experiencing diarrhoea since two and half months back. She also gave a history of loose motion/intermittent diarrhoea, on and off for the past 1-2 years. On laboratory investigation, using the standard parasitological techniques, she was diagnosed as suffering from Ascaris lumbricoides and Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Single infection either with Ascaris lumbricoides or Strongyloides stercoralis is of common occurrence, however concurrent infection with these two parasites is of infrequent occurrence. -

Among refugees resettled in North America, the prevalence of potentially pathogenic parasites ranges from 8% to 86% [1, 2]. This broad range may be explained by differences in geographic origin, age, previous living and environmental conditions, diet, occupational history, and education level. Although frequently asymptomatic or subclinical, some infections may cause significant morbidity and mortality. Parasites that infect humans represent a complex and broad category of organisms. This section of the guidelines will provide detailed information regarding the most commonly encountered parasitic infections. A summary table of current recommendations is included in Table 1. In addition, information on overseas pre-departure intervention programs can be accessed on the CDC Immigrant, Refugee, and Migrant Health website. Strongyloides Below is a brief summary of salient points about Strongyloides infection in refugees, especially in context of the presumptive treatment with ivermectin. Detailed information about Strongyloides for healthcare providers can be found at the CDC Parasitic Diseases website. Background • Ivermectin is the drug of choice for strongyloidiasis.
