Box 1047, Adelaide, South Australia 5001 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This contribution to a revision of the Australian species of Kunzea is, similarly to previous publications on western Australian groups, primarily based on the gross morphology examined on herbarium specimens and field observations. The species are, however, arranged in infrageneric groupings supported by molecular research. Descriptions and brief discussions of four subgenera and six sections are included throughout in order to provide an overall classification of the genus, although not all species are described in full detail. Keys, descriptions and illustrations to the following 23 accepted species are provided (new taxa in bold): K. ambigua (Sm.) Druce, K. aristulata, K. axillaris, K. badjaensis, K. bracteolata Maiden & Betche, K. caduca, K. calida F.Muell., K. cambagei Maiden & Betche, K. capitata (Sm.) Rchb. ex Heynh. subsp. capitata, subsp. seminuda, K. dactylota, K. flavescens C.T.White & Francis, K. graniticola Byrnes, K. juniperoides subsp. juniperoides, subsp. pernervosa, K. muelleri Benth., K. obovata Byrnes, K. occidentalis, K. opposita F.Muell. var. opposita, var. leichhardtii Byrnes, K. parvifolia Schauer, K. petrophila, K. pomifera F.Muell., K. rupestris Blakeley, K. sericothrix, K. truncata. Natural putative hybrids between taxa occurring in close proximity have been examined and evaluated. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Guide to Users Background What is the summary for and where does it come from? This summary has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. It highlights important elements of the biodiversity of the region in two ways: • Listing species which may be significant for management because they are found only in the region, mainly in the region, or they have a conservation status such as endangered or vulnerable. • Comparing the region to other parts of Australia in terms of the composition and distribution of its species, to suggest components of its biodiversity which may be nationally significant. The summary was produced using the Australian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. The list of families covered in ANHAT is shown in Appendix 1. Volume Six Number Two Conservation Science November 2007 Western Australia The translation of Diels 1906 Plant Life in Western Australia – editor’s note NEIL GIBSON1,2 1) Science Division, Department of Environment and Conservation, PO Box 51 Wanneroo WA 6065 2) School of Plant Biology, The University of Western Australia, 35 Stirling Highway, Crawley WA 6009 After some 100 years it has now been possible to publish for the first time a complete translation of Diel’s seminal work on Western Australian biogeography (Diels 1906). The production of this translation has stretched over many decades and involved a number of people who recognized the need to provide an accessible version of the first major work on the ecology, vegetation and biogeography of Western Australian plants to an Australian audience. Soon after his appointment as Head of the Department of Botany, University of Western Australia (now the School of Plant Biology within the Facility of Natural and Agricultural Sciences) in 1947, Dr B.J. Grieve located a partially completed draft translation of Diels’ work which had been commenced by Professor and Mrs W. Dakin after their arrival in the Biology Department of the University in 1914. Unfortunately, after they returned to England in 1920, the work largely lapsed. Some minor additions appears to have been undertaken on this manuscript by Dr D. Herbert and C.A. Gardner with copies dated 1927 lodged in library of the Western Australian Herbarium (Diels et al. 1927). Appreciating the value of Diels’ work for teaching and research purposes, Grieve completed a definitive translation which included updated taxonomy and ecological data. -

Approved Conservation Advice for Proteaceae Dominated Kwongan
Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) (s266B) Approved Conservation Advice for Proteaceae Dominated Kwongkan Shrublands of the southeast coastal floristic province of Western Australia 1. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee (the Committee) was established under the EPBC Act and has obligations to present advice to the Minister for the Environment (the Minister) in relation to the listing and conservation of threatened ecological communities, including under sections 189, 194N and 266B of the EPBC Act. 2. The Committee provided its advice on the Proteaceae Dominated Kwongkan Shrublands of the southeast coastal floristic province of Western Australia ecological community to the Minister as a draft of this approved conservation advice. In 2014, the Minister accepted the Committee’s advice, adopting it as the approved conservation advice. 3. The Minister amended the list of threatened ecological communities under section 184 of the EPBC Act to include the Proteaceae Dominated Kwongkan Shrublands of the southeast coastal floristic province of Western Australia ecological community in the endangered category. It is noted that elements of the ecological community are also on the Western Australian list of threatened ecological communities. 4. The nomination and a draft description for this ecological community were made available for expert and public comment for a minimum of 30 business days. The Committee and Minister had regard to all public and expert comment that was relevant to the consideration of the ecological community. 5. This approved conservation advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time it was approved; this includes scientific literature, advice from consultations, existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this ecological community.
