The author is especially indebted to Arden L. Albee and Alfred H. Chidester, his associates in this project, whose criticism of the manuscript of this paper and of related official reports, has helped guide the orientation of the study. Drafts of the manuscript have also been reviewed by Professors Brewster Baldwin and Peter Coney of Middlebury College, Professors R. Y. Lamarche of the University of Sherbrooke, F. F. Osborne of Laval University, P. H. Osberg of the Univer- sity of Maine, and John L. Rosenfeld of the University of California at Los Angeles; by Dr. Pierre St. Julien of the Quebec Department of Natural Re- sources, Dr. M. J. Rickard of Australian National University, and by , R. H. Moench, L. R. Page and R. E. Zartman of the U.S. Geological Survey. The author is indebted to the foregoing, and to R. H. Jahns of Stanford University and W. S. White of the U.S. Geological Survey for counseling in the field, for contributions of unpublished information, and for many other sug- gestions in times past. Dr. J. R. Beland and Dr. F. F. Osborne and their colleagues of the Quebec Department of Natural Resources have kindly shown the author over much of the ground between the Vermont-Quebec boundary and the Gaspe Peninsula. Dr. Charles G. Doll, Vermont State Geologist, and his associates have provided abundant information well in advance of publication, which is now about com- plete. Professors M. P. Billings and J. B. Thompson, Jr., of Harvard University, have maintained a continued interest in the U.S. Geological Survey's work in Vermont, in support both of the regular investigations of the project and of such by-products as the present study. The author is much indebted to E-an Zen of the U.S. Geological Survey for a continuing correspondence concerning the relationships of the rocks of the Taconic Range. Others of the author's colleagues who have contributed information, sugges- tions, and criticism as well as their interest and hospitality, and some of whom are members of the organizations above mentioned, include C. A. Anderson, Alex Baer, G. W. Bain, Robert Balk, H. M. Bannerman, E. S. Barghoorn, F. W. Benoit, M. B'rube, V. H. Booth, A. J. Boucot, W. F. Brace, R. L. Brown, Jr., Josiah Bridge, W. H. Bucher, W.
