The author is especially indebted to Arden L. Albee and Alfred H. Chidester, his associates in this project, whose criticism of the manuscript of this paper and of related official reports, has helped guide the orientation of the study. LONGWELL HE NAME of Arthur Keith is inseparably connected with Ap- Tpalachian geology. During most of his mature life, over a period of nearly 50 years, his chief efforts were devoted to field study, map- ping, and written description of selected areas distributed from the Carolinas to Maine. Sixteen folios of the United States Geological Survey, most of them under his name alone, a few prepared jointly with other workers, are in themselves a monument to his skill and industry. Keith's ancestors came from England to Massachusetts Colony in the seventeenth century. His father, Harrison Alonzo Keith, and his mother, Mary Elizabeth Richardson, grew up in Ohio and were in the same class (1859) at Antioch College during the presidency of Horace Mann. After their marriage they settled in St. Louis, Mis- souri, where Arthur was born on September 30, 1864. While he was still an infant the family moved to ancestral Massachusetts and set up a new home in Quincy. There the father was high school princi- pal for twenty years, later Mayor, and finally served as City Clerk until his death. Arthur attended public school in Quincy until the age of 12, when he went to Adams Academy to prepare for college.

YOCHELSON HARLES DOOLITTLE WALCOTT was born at New York Mills, C New York, March 31, 1850, and died of apoplexy at Wash- ington, D.C., on February 9, 1927. During his lifetime he had a scientific range which stretched literally from the dawn of life on the planet earth to the dawn of the space age. He was a man preeminent in science within the Federal government and within the scientific community of the country as a whole. He was one of the more important members of the National Acad- emy of Sciences and perhaps did as much as any other president of the Academy to help that organization develop its pre- eminence in the American scientific scene. He was an excellent scientist in his own chosen field of geology and paleontology and yet curiously, in spite of all his accomplishments, he is virtually unknown as the important historical figure he was in the development of science in America. EARLY LIFE IN NEW YORK Charles D. Walcott's predecessors came from Shropshire, England, and his first American paternal ancestor, Captain Jonathan Walcott, of Salem, Massachusetts, died in 1699. His grandfather, Benjamin Stuart Walcott, moved from Rhode Island in 1822 and became one of the leading manufacturers in 472 BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS central New York.
