SUMMARY A total of 50 individual volunteer divers, all members of the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), took part in 5-day long conservation working parties within the Lundy Marine Nature Reserve annually between 1995 and 2001. Over this period of time, a total of 24 projects were undertaken, some being one-off tasks whilst others continued on a year-on-year basis. Eighteen of these projects, undertaken between 1997 and 2001, are described in this report (the remainder being described elsewhere in other reports). The projects were decided upon in consultation with English Nature (Exeter & Peterborough offices), the country agency responsible for the management of the MNR, and the MNR Warden, Liza Cole. The volunteer divers were of mixed diving experience (though all were of at least BSAC sports diver grade or equivalent qualifications) and of mixed marine biological expertise. The trips were organised by Robert Irving, a marine environmental consultant and Secretary to the Lundy Marine Nature Reserve Advisory Group, as part-working party and part-holiday. -

EDDYSTONE REEF CAMERA SURVEY REPORT 2014-2015 Executive summary The Eddystone Reef is part of the Start Point to Plymouth Sound and Eddystone Special Area of Conservation (SAC). In January 2014 management measures were introduced to prohibit bottom-towed fisheries from using key areas within the SAC, thereby creating a mosaic of protected areas within the SAC that may provide protection to vulnerable reef-associated species. Ideally, newly established protected areas should be monitored over time to observe change in biological communities attributable to adopted management strategies. This project is a collaborative partnership between the University of Exeter (Penryn Campus) (UoE), Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (CIFCA) and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS); funded by the Pig Shed Trust. The partners collaborated on the experimental design of the project, with MCS identifying the funding partner and co-ordinating the planning of the project, the CIFCA conducting surveys of benthic communities, and UoE analysing resulting data. This report details activities for the first two years of the project, 2014-2015. Drop-down camera surveys in 2015 produced 428 images of the seabed that allowed identification of 1542 benthic organisms. Surveys conducted in 2014 resulted in 214 images which yielded 372 benthic organisms. All surveys were conducted over a short time-frame at a similar time of year. -

A new deep-water actiniarian species, Segonzactis hartogi sp.n. is described from the Mediterranean (Aegean Sea). This is the first record of the family Condylanthidae from the Mediterranean Sea. Morphometric and ecological differences between the new species and S. platypus Riemann-Zürneck, 1979, the only known species of the genus, are discussed. Another six species of the Actiniarian fauna of the deep Aegean are also presented. Information is given on their geographical distribution and habitat. Northeast coral gardens provide vital breeding and feeding habitats for fishes of 10 conservation and commercial importance. Such habitats are increasingly at risk of 11 destruction as a result of over fishing, surface ocean warming, acidification and 12 marine litter. 13 2. A key cause for concern regarding the vulnerability of coral gardens to damage from 14 any source is their slow growth rate, and thereby their ability to recover from 15 damage. Hence protected areas are being put in place, which exclude the use of 16 towed demersal fishing gear.
