Throughout his career Paul has worked at the Natural History Museum, London which he joined soon after completing post-doctoral studies in Swansea which in turn followed his completion of a PhD in Durham. Paul’s research interests are polymatic within the sphere of bryozoology – he has studied fossil bryozoans from all of the geological periods, and modern bryozoans from all oceanic basins. His interests include taxonomy, biodiversity, skeletal structure, ecology, evolution, history to name a few subject areas; in fact there are probably none in bryozoology that have not been the subject of his many publications. His office in the Natural History Museum quickly became a magnet for visiting bryozoological colleagues whom he always welcomed: he has always been highly encouraging of the research efforts of others, quick to collaborate, and generous with advice and information. FAUTIN his ancient phylum of mostly marine organisms is best known for its contribution to geomorphological features, forming thousands of square Tkilometres of coral reefs in warm tropical waters. Their fossil remains contribute to some limestones. Cnidarians are also significant components of the plankton, where large medusae – popularly called jellyfish – and colonial forms like Portuguese man-of-war and stringy siphonophores prey on other organisms including small fish. Some of these species are justly feared by humans for their stings, which in some cases can be fatal. Certainly, most New Zealanders will have encountered cnidarians when rambling along beaches and fossicking in rock pools where sea anemones and diminutive bushy hydroids abound. In New Zealand’s fiords and in deeper water on seamounts, black corals and branching gorgonians can form veritable trees five metres high or more. In contrast, inland inhabitants of continental landmasses who have never, or rarely, seen an ocean or visited a seashore can hardly be impressed with the Cnidaria as a phylum – freshwater cnidarians are relatively few, restricted to tiny hydras, the branching hydroid Cordylophora, and rare medusae. Worldwide, there are about 10,000 described species, with perhaps half as many again undescribed. All cnidarians have nettle cells known as nematocysts (or cnidae – from the Greek, knide, a nettle), extraordinarily complex structures that are effectively invaginated coiled tubes within a cell. -

The genus can be distinguished from other anthomedusae by the (3) two opposite tentacles with cnidophores and four exumbrellar cnidocyst pouches with 93(3) ocelli. Specimens were assigned to Teissiera polypofera due to the long and narrow manubrium transposing bell opening and polyp buds with medusoid buds on it, issuing DOI from the base of manubrium. SUMMARY A total of 50 individual volunteer divers, all members of the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), took part in 5-day long conservation working parties within the Lundy Marine Nature Reserve annually between 1995 and 2001. Over this period of time, a total of 24 projects were undertaken, some being one-off tasks whilst others continued on a year-on-year basis. Eighteen of these projects, undertaken between 1997 and 2001, are described in this report (the remainder being described elsewhere in other reports). The projects were decided upon in consultation with English Nature (Exeter & Peterborough offices), the country agency responsible for the management of the MNR, and the MNR Warden, Liza Cole. The volunteer divers were of mixed diving experience (though all were of at least BSAC sports diver grade or equivalent qualifications) and of mixed marine biological expertise. The trips were organised by Robert Irving, a marine environmental consultant and Secretary to the Lundy Marine Nature Reserve Advisory Group, as part-working party and part-holiday. -

Besides the two syntypes, no further specimens are known to have been collected. The original description of C. japonica is brief, and, therefore it is difficult to identify the species based on the available infor- mation. In 2014, we collected a single specimen of Capnea Gosse, 1860 from around the type locality of C. japonica and examined its morphological characters, such as the external features, cnidome, and musculature, and then compared it with the syntypes of C. japonica. The characteristic form of tentacles, size and distribution of cnidae, and very strong sphincter muscle in our specimen were a good match to the original description and to the results of examining the syntypes. Based on the topotype and syntypes, we redescribe C. japonica and show its phylogenetic position with newly obtained DNA se- quencing data.
