  • The Experience of Reconstructing Historic Buildings in Practice: Selected Cases from the Czech Republic
Sociology Study, December 2016, Vol. 6, No. 12, 783‐789 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2016.12.005 DAVID PUBLISHING The Experience of Reconstructing Historic Buildings in Practice: Selected Cases From the Czech Republic Josef Štulca Abstract A negative attitude to the physical reconstruction of damaged or destroyed historic structures back to their original forms has been deeply rooted in the Czech heritage conservation philosophy since the beginning of the twentieth century. Under the influence of practices abroad, Czech conservators have, however, in some cases, accepted reconstruction. This paper seeks to illustrate the process of continuously oscillating between the refusal and the acceptance of reconstruction in the Czech Republic, with selected cases taken from heritage conservation practice—namely, the facades on the north side of the main square in the historic town of Nové Město nad Metují in east Bohemia (1952‐1954), the western facade of the Emmaus Abbey Church in Prague (1964‐1966), Stone Bell House in Prague (1974‐1988), and the spires and gables of the Lesser Town town hall in Prague (2007‐2008). They show how much the quality and the regard to historical faithfulness of the execution matters in reconstruction and how useful it is in this process to follow the principles of the Charter of Venice, an international document on heritage conservation issued in 1964, which, despite some recent objections, is still far from obsolete. Keywords Heritage conservation, reconstruction, historical authenticity, credibility, historicism, modernism A negative, sometimes even hostile, attitude to the restorations” of monuments in the second half of physical reconstruction of partly damaged or totally nineteenth century.

  • ALFONS MUCHA: the SLAV EPIC 19 July 2018 – 13 January 2019 Prague City Gallery Municipal House Náměstí Republiky 5, Prague 1 Open Daily from 10 A.M
ALFONS MUCHA: THE SLAV EPIC 19 July 2018 – 13 January 2019 Prague City Gallery Municipal House Náměstí Republiky 5, Prague 1 Open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Exhibition Curator: Magdalena Juříková After two years, The Slav Epic will be again presented to the public. This time on the premises of the Municipal House, connected with the founding of Czechoslovakia and with another work by Alfons Mucha, who decorated the Mayor’s Hall there. The exhibition space of the Municipal House is the most representative in Prague and its Art Nouveau character is very closely related to Mucha’s decorative work. It gives a very suitable backdrop for The Slav Epic series, but its capacity is not enough for all of its twenty monumental canvases. Therefore it will feature eleven smaller-scale paintings mostly created during the First World War and later on, when Mucha was forced to adapt the original dimensions to the limited supply of canvas from Belgium. Nine large-scale paintings of the series are exhibited in Pavilion H at the Brno Exhibition Center, where they were part of the RE:PUBLIKA Festival 1918–2018. They will remain on display there until the end of this year. For the specific conditions of the exhibition halls of the Municipal House we have opted for such technical solution that allows to present the canvases from both sides. It reveals how the monumental canvases are mounted on the frame, and the viewers can closely inspect the quality of the work performed, which, even after 90 years from the handover of the whole series to the City of Prague is still in good shape.

  • In the Footsteps of Emperor Charles IV
Press release In the footsteps of Emperor Charles IV For visitors the charm and magic of Prague can seem like an accumulated effect of chance. However, this is not really the case, one could rather say that Prague largely bears the hallmarks of a man - the Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV born in 1316. During his reign Prague became the heart of Europe. Get to know the wonderful heritage and the historic testament that he left behind. In Czech Republic celebrations marking the 700 years anniversary of his birth takes place and you have a unique opportunity to take part in the events around the country. Charles IV absolutely loved Prague and the city flourished under his rule. Many construction projects started during the reign of Charles IV, including St. Vitus Cathedral. In 1348 he founded Prague's New Town (Nove Mesto) and Charles University was established to become the first university in Central Europe. Karlštejn Castle was established to protect the imperial jewels and other treasures. The construction of Charles Bridge began in 1357 on the site where Judith Bridge once stood (which collapsed in a flooding 1342). Charles IV is remembered as the most beloved of Czech kings and " the father of the Czech nation." Events in Prague and around the country Prague Castle will in memory of the 700 anniversary of the birth of the Czech king and emperor Charles IV show case seven major exhibitions. A special exhibition of the Czech crown jewels will be displayed in the Vladislav Hall between 15 to 29 May 2016.

  • 2020 Exhibition Plan
Prague City Gallery exhibition schedule for 2020 Prague City Gallery is opening several exhibitions that had been more or less ready to open prior to the declaration of the state of emergency, and is also reopening its two permanent exhibitions at Villa Bílek at Hradčany and the Bílek House in Chýnov near Tábor. Our goal is to fulfil all the tasks still awaiting us this year, but unfortunately some of them are dependent on developments outside the country and are thus out of our control. For instance, the Ivan Meštrović exhibition has been affected not only by the coronavirus, but also by the earthquake in Croatia. Since the Croatian Ministry of Culture is busy repairing damage to the country’s museums and monuments, our preliminary agreement now aims for September of next year, when support for the project is more certain. Postponing the exhibition date also gives us time to renovate the Municipal Library’s reception and restroom areas. Plans call for the creation of a modern lobby with a bookshop that will significantly increase the comfort of visitors to this leading exhibition hall. The design from the Josef Pleskot studio has already been approved and we have received funding from the city. The exhibition of photographs by Frida Kahlo currently appears realistic, although it all depends on the whether we can transport the works from Mexico in the second half of the year. The situation of the exhibition’s other partners will play a role as well. The exhibition by Chinese artist Xiao Quan, who recorded the revolutionary events on China’s cultural and political scene in the 1980s, will of course be possible only if we can transport his works from China.
