    Episode 47 – What’s Your NBA “Net Rating?” It never ceases to amaze me how little that many Christians seem to try to measure their true effectiveness for Christ! Now, to be sure, many Christians do measure how good they feel about themselves, which can alternately result in pangs of guilt or a certain measure of self-satisfaction. But the real question should be and ultimately is this: “how does Jesus measure the Christian’s works?” Let’s back up a minute. All unbelievers will be assessed by God at the Great White Throne judgment. It’s there that they will reap what they deserve from the sins they have sown. In contrast, believers will appear before Christ at the Judgment Seat of Christ, where each will get rewards for the works they’ve built on the foundation of Christ. At the same time, all the remainder of their works will be mercifully burned. By the power of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Paul instructs us about this in 1 Corinthians 3:9-14. To be perfectly clear, the Bible teaches that we cannot possibly get to heaven by our good works like so many religionists would like us to believe. No, each person can only respond in faith to the amazing grace freely bestowed by Christ via the Cross. That’s in Ephesians 2:8. So, once each of us is indeed a believer through His grace, God is recording all of our works for the unfolding of the joyous event for each of us that’s known as the Judgment Seat of Christ.

Please have a seat. Welcome to the White House, and congratulations, a little belatedly, to the Los Angeles Lakers for winning your 15th—15th—NBA title and 4th in the past 10 years. Before I say a few things about the Lakers, I just want to acknowledge some wonderful Members of Congress and big Lakers fans who are here: Congresswoman Jane Harman, Congresswoman Laura Richardson, Congressman Adam Schiff, Congressman Brad Sherman, and Lucille Roybal-Allard. Please, everybody, give them a big round of applause. Now, as folks here will tell you, the only thing that is better than playing basketball—the only thing that's better than watching basketball is playing basketball, but I'm 48, and soon to be 49, and it's a little harder these days to move around on the court, especially when you're playing against kids who are half your age. But I still get enormous, enormous pleasure from watching great athletes on the court. And nobody exemplifies excellence in basketball better than the Los Angeles Lakers last year. I want to congratulate everybody who helped make this team what it is, from the assistants to the front office staff, to the trainers and the ticket takers, all the fans back in L.A. who bleed purple and gold.
