PRESIDENT/AD ATHLETICS COMPLEX oyola Marymount University continues Lits mission of Building Champions, and an impor- tant aspect to that mission is the capital improvement of the LMU Athletics Complex. As the cornerstone of the Athletics Complex, Gersten Pavilion is home to men and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball. The Pavilion continues to grow as state-of-the-art equipment, including a new videoboad and lighting system, have been installed. Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center recently opened in 2001 and has become one of the top aquatics facilities in the nation. The Burns Center is home to the men and women’s water polo and women’s swim teams. The complex hosted the 2002 NCAA men’s water polo championships in October drawing a sell-out crowd of 2600 fans. Sullivan Field, home to LMU men and women’s soccer, has also made enhancements over the years as it has served host to the 1994 World Cup and 1998 World Cup exhibi- tion Gold Cup tournament. After permanent bleachers were installed in 2002, a top-of- the-line turf was installed thanks to an arrangement to serve as host with the Rose Bowl. Page Stadium is the home of the LMU baseball team and continues its captial improvements to become one of the most unique college ball parks in the nation. The Mikos Blue Monster, a replica to Fenway’s Green Monster, was built in 2001 and features a manual scoreboard. Pride Park, the entrance to the stadium will be complete this Fall 2004 . The LMU Tennis Center also received its crown jewel in the George P. Kading and Morris A Pivaroff Tournament Court. The sixth and main court complete with spectator seating was completed in the summer of 2004. As the Lions continue to Build Champions, the facilities continue to reflect that goal.

THE L.R.C. success in the classroom: THE LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER Supporting the University mission to encourage learning and the education of the whole person, the Learning Resource Center (LRC) has made its primary mission the cultivation of knowledge and critical thinking in students through individual and small group tutoring.

The LRC, open to all students, plays a critical role in pro- viding academic support. Students can enlist the help of full-time specialists in writing, math, reading and study skills. The LRC also has a peer tutoring staff trained to assist students in many University courses.

Students are encouraged to use the LRC to discuss upcom- ing assignments, to prepare for exams or to review drafts of papers. To utilize these services, stu- dents simply need to set up a free 30-minute or one-hour tutorial appointment.

One of the key student-support services offered by the LRC is the Academic Monitoring Program. Student-athletes who participate meet weekly with an LRC academic specialist for a 15-minute appointment. Working with the specialist, the student-athlete learns to arrange study time, dis- cusses upcoming assignments and develops a plan for academic success. Once a week, the spe- cialist sends a team report to the coach, the Director of Athletics, the Director of the Learning Resource Center and the special academic adviser assigned to the team.

The Academic Monitoring Program offers a num- ber of advantages for student-athletes: LRC courses and sessions include: • Personal attention from an academic specialist • Workshops (one-on-one or group) – Learn to who guides the student-athlete in examining and manage your time; overcome test anxiety; become a better forming academic goals. reader; conquer math word problems; write, revise or • Time management and learning strategies, as review a research paper with a tutor; or develop other study well as a review of the student-athlete’s weekly skills.
