The Martyrdom of Man was a history of the world from an entirely new viewpoint, and was a prominent freethinking text of the late Nineteenth century. It is not an exaggeration to say that it provided a view of History as revolutionary as Darwin s view of Science - an entirely new and non- religious way of looking at the subject. It was very popular and influential on publication in the 1870 s and long after - Arthur Conan Doyle, H.G. Wells and George Orwell were all heavily influenced William Winwood Reade (1838 - 1875) was a British historian, explorer, and philosopher. His major work, The Martyrdom of Man (1872), is a secular history of the Western world. According to one historian, the book became a kind of substitute bible for secularists In it, Reade attempts to trace the development of Western civilization in terms analogous to those used in the natural sciences. He uses it to advance his philosophy, which was political liberalism. The final section of the book provoked enormous controversy due to Reade s outspoken attack on Christian dogma and the book was condemned by several magazines. In 1872 the then Prime minister, William Gladstone denounced The Martyrdom of Man as one of several irreligious works (the others included work by Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer and David Friedrich Strauss). Reade was an atheist (although this has been disputed by a surviving family member) and a social Darwinist who believed in survival of the fittest and wanted to create a new civilization: While war, slavery and religion had once been necessary, Reade argued, they would not always be so;in the future only science could guarantee human progress. • The History of Banjul, the Gambia, 1816 -1965
HEART OF BANJUL: THE HISTORY OF BANJUL, THE GAMBIA, 1816 -1965 By Matthew James Park A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History- Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT HEART OF BANJUL: THE HISTORY OF BANJUL, THE GAMBIA, 1816-1965 By Matthew James Park This dissertation is a history of Banjul (formerly Bathurst), the capital city of The Gambia during the period of colonial rule. It is the first dissertation-length history of the city. “Heart of Banjul” engages with the history of Banjul (formerly Bathurst); the capital city of The Gambia. Based on a close reading of archival and primary sources, including government reports and correspondences, missionary letters, journals, and published accounts, travelers accounts, and autobiographical materials, the dissertation attempts to reconstruct the city and understand how various parts of the city came together out of necessity (though never harmoniously). In the spaces where different kinds of people, shifting power structures, and nonhuman actors came together something which could be called a city emerged. Chapter 1, “Intestines of the State,” covers most of the 19 th century and traces how the proto-colonial state and its interlocutors gradually erected administration over The Gambia. Rather than a teleology of colonial takeover, the chapter presents the creation of the colonial state as a series of stops and starts experienced as conflicts between the Bathurst administration and a number of challengers to its sovereignty including Gambian warrior kings, marabouts, criminals, French authorities, the British administration in Sierra Leone, missionaries, merchants, and disease. Chapter 2, “The Circulatory System,” engages with conflicts between the state, merchants, Gambian kings, and urban dwellers.

  • Anglophone Discourses on Race in the 19Th Century: British and African Perspectives
Stichproben. Wiener Zeitschrift für kritische Afrikastudien Nr.16/2009, 9. Jg., 45‐85. Anglophone Discourses on Race in the 19th Century: British and African Perspectives Arno Sonderegger In 1650, when both the Atlantic and Transatlantic Slave Trade were well underway for two hundred years, there already was an established tradition which tied together the status of a slave and black skin colour (Davidson 1994: 43, 57ff.). The dehumanisation experienced by slaves under colonial slavery was extraordinary as they were perceived and treated like chattel. They were considered inferior and ignoble beings. Their only value was in their manpower – in their role as, according to the biblical verse, “hewers of wood and drawers of water.” (Josuah 9:23) Without any reference to its biblical origin or to the curse on Noah’s grandson Canaan, son of Ham, described at some length in Genesis 9:18‐27, the quoted phrase reappeared time and again in the colonial and travel literature of the 19th century as a means to legitimate the exploitation of Africans. Its continuous use contributed greatly to habituate the European public to ignore the Africans` humanity – indeed, reifying them by capitalising on them (Hallett 1976, Boahen 1987). The concept of “race” developed in the second half of the 17th century. With it, the pretence of having found a secular – non‐religious – explanation for human differences in time and space was established (Hund 2006). Together reification and racism were at work in producing a stereotyped image of Euro‐African relations that, at the same time, allowed for both degrading the African (‘heathen’ and ‘black’) and upgrading the European (‘Christian’ and ‘white’).

  • The Victorian Religious Novel: Conversion, Confession, and the Marriage Plot
RICE UNIVERSITY The Victorian Religious Novel: Conversion, Confession, and the Marriage Plot by Eun Young Koh A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE Doctor of Philosophy APPROVED, THESIS COMMITTEE: Helena Michie, Professor of English, Agnes Cullen Arnold Professor in Robert~ L. Patten, Professor of English, Lynette S. Autrey Professor in Humanities Jeffrey J. Kripal, J. Newton Rayzor Professor, Department Chair Religious Studies HOUSTON, TEXAS August 2011 ABSTRACT The Victorian Religious Novel: Conversion, Confession, and the Marriage Plot by Eun Young Koh Victorian scholars of fiction have hitherto largely overlooked that fiction was an important site for Victorian authors and readers to engage in open discussion of religious issues in the Victorian period, often known, even to itself, as the "Age of 'Faith and Doubt."' Along with sermons and religious tracts, which often directly addressed popular audiences, fiction became one of the most popular arenas for debating theology and religious practices. My project aims to revive interest in the religious novel genre by defining the genre, positioning it within its cultural context, and looking at how it engages in active and reciprocal conversations with other genres, fictional and nonfictional. This new approach reveals how the religious novel, long derided or ignored by critics, often leads the way with narrative innovations. Most interestingly, the religious novel, whose alternative name is tellingly the "theological romance," embraces and adopts one of the most popular plot lines of the Victorian novel tradition, namely the marriage/courtship plot, and develops it into the post-marriage plot, a plot that focuses on and examines marital life.
