Assessment of Sport Hunted Lion and Leopard Trophies Assessment of sport hunted lion and leopard trophies: Guidelines for data collection Sport hunting is an industry that requires careful regulation and a high degree of compliance with “best practice” standards to ensure it is sustainable. This is particularly important for large carnivore species such as lion and leopard that have recently suffered widespread declines and are sensitive to human disturbance. There is a need to standardize data collected from lion and leopard trophies across their range to allow independent assessment of trophy age, trophy quality, and hunt effort. Such data can enable wildlife agencies to track population trends of hunted species over time and react to changes accordingly. The biological impacts of hunting will also differ depending on the sex and age of harvested individuals, and must therefore be monitored closely. In addition, blood and skin samples can easily be taken from trophies to provide valuable information on disease and genetics in wild lion and leopard populations. These data would add immeasurably to conservation efforts. Effective monitoring requires collaboration between professional hunters, operators, conservation authorities, and researchers. In this document we provide guidelines on the information and measurements that should routinely be taken from every trophy animal. Some of the information is collected in the field by the professional hunter immediately after the hunt, while other data are collected at a later date by examining the cleaned skull. It requires no technical ability or special equipment other than a GPS, digital camera, and measuring tape; all of which are commonly used by sport hunters. Section A: Data to be provided by Professional Hunters/Operators 1. Hunt Return Forms Information is required on hunting effort and trophy quality. This information is best collected on a printed hunt return form filled in by the professional hunter (PH) after every lion and leopard hunt (i.e. for successful and unsuccessful hunts). The submission of such forms must be mandatory; these data are only useful if collected in a rigorous and consistent manner. Operators must be penalised for failure to submit forms. The onus is on the operator to ensure all information is sent to the relevant authority by the end of the hunting season. Self addressed envelopes can be provided if postage is necessary. The following information should be collected (items in italics are not essential): a) Individual ID number (i.e. a number on the h) Number of baits and bait sites used questionnaire that can be linked to the trophy - hunt i) Was hunt unsuccessful or successful? return number, permit number, CITES tag number) j) If unsuccessful: Why? b) Name of operator k) Date trophy taken / number of days into hunt c) Name of professional hunter l) GPS location (in decimal degrees) d) Name of hunting block/property where hunt is m) Condition of animal ( snares, wounds) undertaken n) Number of animals seen on baits and off baits during e) Name of concession holder/property owner hunt (males, females) f) Name of client g) Date hunt started and finished Questions should not exceed one page. An example of a hunt return form is provided in Appendix I. 2. Measurements (included on hunt return form) The following body measurements should be taken for every lion and leopard trophy before the animal is skinned: a) Body length (cm, tip of nose to tip of tail; Measurement A–C) b) Shoulder height (cm, tip of scapula to end of forepaw; Measurement E) c) Neck circumference - only for leopard (cm, immediately behind the ear; Measurement D) Figure 1: Body measurements to be taken for each trophy before skinning. The following skull measurements should be taken once the skull has been cleaned. a) Skull length (mm, greatest length of skull, measured as a straight line between pegs) b) Skull width (mm, greatest width measured across zygomatic arches) Figure 2: Measurements of skull length and width to be taken for each trophy. PHs and operators routinely measure skull width and height to provide an SCI rating (width + height in inches); however, the SCI rating on its own is of limited use - the individual metrics in mm are needed to estimate age. 3. Photographs Photographs of the trophy can be used to age hunted lion and leopard effectively. While the traditional photographs taken by clients are useful, more detailed photographs of mane development (in lions), nose pigmentation, and tooth wear are required for reliable aging. They must be taken from the correct angle and at the highest possible resolution. The time and date must be correctly set for digital images. Images must also be labelled/tagged with the individual ID number (as appears on the hunt return form), the name of the operator, the name of the PH, the name of the client, the date the trophy was taken, and the name of the hunting block or property where the hunt was undertaken. Digital images can either be sent via email or placed on a CD and posted with the hunt return form. a) Lion: Photographs showing body size and condition, mane development, nose pigmentation, and tooth wear must be provided by the PH/operator for every lion trophy. Nine photographs are required (Plate 1a-e and Plate 3a-d). This should preferably be done by wildlife officials with the skull in hand. However, it is also possible to do it from photographs if the skull is not available. The angle and quality of photographs are critical if tooth wear is to be assessed this way. Two photographs of each skull are required (Plate 3a, b), while the two additional photographs are useful but not essential (Plate 3c, d). Removal of single rooted premolar (P2) for x-ray assessment Post mortem x-rays of teeth can assist with aging trophies - the pulp cavity fills in as lion and leopard get older. The best teeth to remove are the first upper premolars (P2 in Plate 2) on both sides of the skull. They are small and will not affect the overall appearance of the trophy. They can be removed from the skull using a pair of pliers although care must be taken not to crack the teeth.

The methodology we use to estimate densities, which was originally designed by our scientific associate Dr. Nic Elliot, has been accepted and adopted by the Kenya Wildlife Service and will be used to estimate lion densities at a national level. We have started an African Wild Dog baseline study, which will determine how many active dens we have in the Mara, number of wild dogs using them, their demographics, and hopefully their activity patterns and spatial ecology. A paper detailing the identification of key wildlife areas that fall outside protected areas was recently published.     Observations of small carnivores in Son Tra Nature Reserve, a small and isolated protected area in central Vietnam Ulrike STREICHER1 and Larry ULIBARRI2 Abstract Over half the 45.5 km² Son Tra peninsula in central Vietnam is a nature reserve. The peninsula has been isolated from other natural habitat by sea and urbanisation for decades. Lion numbers tend to be lower inside hunting concessions as compared to the national parks.

    Prey Preference and Dietary overlap of Sympatric Snow leopard and Tibetan Wolf in Central Part of Wangchuck Centennial National Park Yonten Jamtsho Wangchuck Centennial National Park Department of Forest and Park Services Ministry of Agriculture and Forest 2017 Abstract Snow leopards have been reported to kill livestock in most parts of their range but the extent of this predation and its impact on local herders is poorly understood. There has been even no effort in looking at predator-prey relationships and often we make estimates of prey needs based on studies from neighboring regions. Therefore this study is aimed at analysing livestock depredation, diets of snow leopard and Tibetan wolf and its implication to herder’s livelihood in Choekhortoe and Dhur region of Wangchuck Cetennial National Park. Data on the livestock population, frequency of depredation, and income lost were collected from a total of 38 respondents following census techniques. In addition scats were analysed to determine diet composition and prey preferences. The results showed 38 herders rearing 2815 heads of stock with average herd size of 74.07 stocks with decreasing trend over the years due to depredation. As a result Choekhortoe lost 8.6% while Dhur lost 5.07% of total annual income. Dietary analysis showed overlap between two species indicated by Pianka index value of 0.83 for Dhur and 0.96 for Choekhortoe. The prey preference for snow leopard and Tibetan wolf are domestic sheep and blue sheep respectively, where domestic sheep is an income for herders and blue sheep is important for conservation of snow leopard.

Males and females vary in size and weight, with males being about 1/3 larger than females. Adult males may be more than eight feet long and can weigh 135 - 175 pounds. Adult females may be up to seven feet long and weigh between 90 and 105 pounds. Mountain lions are easily distinguished from other wild cats - the bobcat and lynx. Lions, except for their kittens, are much larger than lynx or bobcats, and have long tails, measuring about one-third of their overall body length. They live in mountainous, semi-arid terrain, subtropical and tropical forests, and swamps. Mountain lions are most common where there is abundant prey, rough terrain, and adequate vegetation. They are active year-round. While mountain lions tend to avoid people, they can and do live in close proximity to humans. They tend to be more active when there is less human presence. The lion’s staple diet is meat. Deer and elk, the primary prey species, often are killed with a bite that breaks the neck or penetrates the skull or the kill is from a “choking” bite that crushes the windpipe.

The sighted species included Leopard Cat, Rustyspotted Cat, Jungle Cat, Small Indian Civet, Asian Palm Civet, Brown Palm Civet, Common Mongoose, Ruddy Mongoose, Stripe-necked Mongoose and unidentified species of Otters. Malabar Civet, Fishing Cat, Brown Mongoose, Nilgiri Marten, and Ratel were not sighted during this study. The Western Ghats alone account for thirteen species of small carnivores of which six are endemic. The sighting of Rustyspotted Cat is the first report from Karnataka. Habitat loss and hunting are the major threats for the small carnivore survival in nature. The Small Indian Civet is exploited for commercial purpose. Hunting technique varies from guns to specially devised traps, and hunting of all the small carnivore species is common in the State.
