It’s in fact increasing to a degree where universities might be forced to shut down as a result of the competition. As the competition is growing, schools marketing efforts is getting more professional. Many universities now have a well thought out strategy for attracting students and to get a competitive advantage. In order to accomplish this it’s essential for organizations to acquire and retain some uniqueness that cannot be imitated by competitors and in the last two decades there has been an increasing attention paid to corporate identity management as a source of competitive advantage. Most researchers perceive corporate identity as an organization´s presentation of itself to its various stakeholders and the way it distinguishes itself from similar and/or competitive organizations. Using a qualitative research method we studied the case of Linnaeus University. The purpose of this research was to study how Linnaeus University is using their corporate identity in their communication against students and employers. After analyzing the results of our empirical study and reflecting on the theoretical framework we concluded that Linnaeus University places great emphasis in their identity, that it is of great importance to them and that they have put a lot of effort in their corporate identity and how they mediate it in their communication. They have a clear picture of they see the university and how they want to communicate the identity, the basis for this is clarity and a strong internal communication strategy. In accordance with the theoretical framework Linnaeus University has a good corporate identity management and the university is so far a success. We believe that there is further research that should be carried out in the field of corporate identity and image in the world of academics. More qualitative as well as quantitative empirical research would be interesting, especially to use a comparative research design investigating both several universities and potential students. It is therefore an organizational identity articulated by a powerful interest group. It can constitute a claim which serves inter alia to justify the authority vested in top managers and to further their interests. The academic literature on organizational identity, and on corporate identity in particular, pays little attention to these political considerations. It focuses in an apolitical manner on shared meanings when corporate identity works, or on cognitive dissonance when it breaks down. In response to this analytical void, we develop a political analysis of corporate identity and its development, using as illustration a longitudinal study of successive changes in the corporate identity of a Brazilian telecommunications company. This suggests a cyclical model in which corporate identity definition and redefinition involve power relations, resource mobilization and struggles for legitimacy. INTRODUCTION The study of organizational identity has attracted a large literature (cf. Albert et al., 2000; Hatch and Schultz, 2004; Whetten and Godfrey, 1998). This interest reflects Gioia et al.’s claim that ‘the concept of identity is key to understanding modern organizations’ (2000, p. 78). Yet there is little agreement on what the concept of organizational identity denotes, on a relevant theory, or on an appropriate methodology for studying it (Hatch and Yanow, 2006). Corporate Branding is becoming the way in which the corporations are differentiating themselves within the competition framework. It is observed that national and multinational companies are increasingly moving towards corporate branding rather than branding of their products and services. Customers are giving more importance to corporate brands’ social quality as compared to technical and functional values of a product. Corporate identity that is fundamental to a corporate brand has been playing a significant role in consumers’ product evaluation. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) currently has occupied an important position on the Corporate Branding and Marketing agenda. A growing number of authors have presented the linkages between CSR, Corporate Identity, Corporate Image, Corporate Branding and Corporate Marketing. The present study has identified some research gaps through an extensive literature review and has proposed a framework describing the effect of CSR on Corporate Branding and Marketing. The study also offers a few propositions to measure the effect of CSR on corporate branding and marketing to gain sustainable competitive advantage and increased firm-level performance. Strategic CSR affects the corporate identity positively, which is again fundamental to the corporate brand, as some authors stated.
