About Kalamazoo College Kalamazoo is a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts college. Founded in 1833, it is among the 100 oldest colleges and universities in the nation. The excellence of its academic programs has earned the College a ''highly competitive" rating by Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. Nearly all of the 1,251 students are enrolled full time and live on campus, creating a . greater sense of community. The College has an excellent teaching faculty, most with doctorates in their fields. The student-faculty ratio of 12:1 affords small classes and personal attention to individual student needs. Kalamazoo offers 22 majors and five other areas of concentrated study. It is noted for strength in the sciences, pre-professional programs, economics and business administration, and foreign languages. The career development internship and foreign study programs are exceptional among all American colleges and universities. Over 80 percent of all Kalamazoo students participate in these off-campus experiences. The campus is located in an attractive residential area, minutes from the downtown business district. The city of Kalamazoo, the fifth-largest metropolitan center in Michigan, provides a wide variety of cultural, social and recreational opportunities. Midway between Chicago and Detroit on I-94, Kalamazoo is served by major bus lines, AMTRAK rail service and several airlines.

4 Men's Tennis Fifty-two in a Rcrw?

While it might be tempting for Kalamazoo College's men's tennis team to rest on its laurels, to do so might also be dangerous.

With many new faces this spring, the Homets will be very different from the squad that took third in

NCAA Division III in 1989. This year's team, which has lost two of its top three players- two-time All

American Dave Borski and Tim Hufler- to graduation, is made up of eight freshmen compared to just three seniors.

How well the youth combines with experience may determine if Kalamazoo is able to continue its string of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships. Kalamazoo has won 51 consecutive

MIAA crowns, a feat unmatched by any amateur, high school, college or professional team in America.

Coach George Acker, who has led the Hornets to their last 31 league titles, is also hoping to keep

Kalamazoo's record of success at the NCAAs alive. Kalamazoo has finished in the top 10 in each of the 14 years the Division III tournament has been held, and has finished lower than fifth just once.

"We have a lot of unknown commodities this year," says Acker. "How well some of our new players fill in may well determine how successful we are."

Two players who are not unknown are junior captains Jeff Field hack (Hartland, Wis./ Arrowhead

High School) and Doug Keen (Leland), both of whom eamed All-American status last spring. Fieldhack was

21-11 in singles action last year and combined with Borski to make the NCAA quarterfinals in doubles. He is expected to play No. 1 singles this spring.

Acker said Fieldhack, who played every day during his recent foreign study stay in France, appears ready for a successful season.

"Jeff does not have a lot of powerful shots but he is tenacious," the coach says. "Other players will have to work hard to beat him."

Keen played No. 4 singles last season and rolled to a team-best 29-5 match record, advancing to the

NCAA quarterfinals. Acker said Keen is another player who gets by on consistent play rather than powerful

5 Men's Tennis Outlook- Continued

strokes.

Two juniors, captain Greg Wood (Anderson, Ind.) and Josh Williams (San Antonio, Tex./Winston

Churchill), were the Hornets' most successful doubles team in '89 with a 12-1 record. Their play may be

hindered by foreign study, however, with both players just recently returning to campus.

Another question mark is sophomore Nathan Eddy (Allegan), who was 11-3 at No.6 singles as a

freshman. Eddy's off-season practice time has been limited due to illness.

Acker will be counting on three fourth-year players- seniors Mark Rampy (Midland/Dow), Dave

Tyggum (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield Central) and Geoff Price (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos)- to fiii out

the lineup. Tyggum played No. 5 singles as a sophomore while Rampy was the No. 6

singles player early last season.

Sophomores James Osowski (El Paso, Tex./J.M. Hanks) and John Ray-Keil (Seattle, Wash./ Garfield)

both will have an opportunity to crack the starting lineup. Other returning players include sophomore Neil

Kool (Bidwell, Ohio/Gallia Academy) and juniors Scott Lochner (St. Joseph) and Robert Saxton (Minneapolis,

Minn./Southwest).

One of the more highly-touted freshman is Lewis Miller (Oakton, Va.), a raw but talented player.

Other frosh include Randy Blau (Bloomfield Hills/Lahser), Scott Brunka (Mount Vernon, Ohio), David Helfer

(East Lansing), Tony Kirk (Houston, Tex./Clear Lake), Kyle Pullen (Ann Arbor/Pioneer), Mark Spitz-Nagel

(Matteson, Ill./Rich South) and Chad VanZandt (Galesburg/Galesburg-Augusta).

Kalamazoo, ranked fourth in NCAA Division III in a preseason poll, will face its usual slate of high

caliber opponents this season. In all, "K" will take on a total of 12 NCAA Division I or Division II squads.

The Hornets will be tested early, playing ninth-ranked Emory University (Ga.) and tenth-ranked

University of the South (Tenn.) during their spring trip in March. During the regular season, top opponents

will include Notre Dame, Michigan State and Western Michigan.

Kalamazoo will defend its Great Lakes Colleges Association title April13-14 at Wabash, and wiii host

the MIAA tournament May 3-4.

This year's NCAA Division ill tournament will be held at May 13-20 at Swarthmore, Pa.

NCAA Division Ill championship, giving Kalamazoo more Division III men's

tennis crowns than any other institution. Thirty-two of his players have attained

All-American status. Acker's overall coaching record is 436-219, which includes

a remarkable 186-1 mark against MIAA competition.

A professorofphysical education, Acker has a BAanda MA from Northern

Illinois University. He also has been instrumental in assisting with the USTA Boys 16 and 18 Junior

Nationals, which have been held in Kalamazoo since 1943.

10 Women's Tennis Squad Strives for Improvement

Kalamazoo College's women's tennis team recorded another winning season in 1989, finishing second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. In 1990, the Hornets hope to improve on their success behind new coach Sherry Acker, who arrives on the Kalamazoo scene with an extensive professional and university-level tennis background. Acker's expertise will come in handy as her players face many stiff competitors in league and tournament matches.

"We have some strong individual players this spring," Acker says in assessing her team. "Combine that with the leadership we hope to get from our seniors and we can have a good season."

Six of the team's top players will be returning as the Hornets tune up in South Carolina for early

1990 spring tournament action. Seniors Carrie Burrous (North Muskegon), Linda Hsi (Kalamazoo/Loy

Norrix) and Teresa Velarde (Grand Blanc) have held top singles positions in all past season matches and the expertise of this dynamic trio should prove to be advantageous. Burrous was 13-3 last spring at No. 4 singles, and was 8-3 at No.2 doubles with teammate Velarde, who is the 1990 team captain. Velarde held the

No. 3 singles slot, breaking even in season matches.

Hsi held a 13-2 mark at No.5 singles, where she was MIAA champ in 1989. Combine the talents of junior Molly Grathwohl (Niles) -who played No. 1 doubles- with sophomore laura Rizzo (Grosse Pointe/

University Liggett), who occupied No.6 singles, and the team looks to be powerful this spring.

Acker will also be looking for strong play from juniors Katherine and Kirsten Gracki (both of Grand

Rapids/Catholic Central), who combined to form the No. 3 doubles team last spring.

The coach also has high hopes for freshman Nadine Messih (Troy I Athens), who has a ch~nce to break into the singles lineup. Others hoping to help out are junior Darcy Draft (Spring Lake) and freshman

Corinne Vorenkamp (Petoskey).

Kalamazoo will be strongly tested on its spring trip, during which the Hornets will play NCAA

Division I, II and III opponents. Among those foes is Denison (Ohio) University, which was ranked 16th in

Division III in the Volvo Tennis preseason poll.

The regular season will be highlighted by the Great Lakes Colleges Association tournament- which includes nationally rated Denison, Hope College and Kenyon (Ohio) College-at DePauw College in Green-

Hope College (May 4-5). The NCAA Division III tournament will be play May 14-20 at Trenton State College

in Trenton, New Jersey.

Kalamazoo's chief rival for MIAA honors will be defending champion Hope, which is rated sixth in

Volvo Tennis' preseason poll.

12 Coach Sherry Acker

Sherry Acker will begin her first season coaching the Kalamazoo College women's tennis team. The

daughter of men's tennis coach George Acker will use her expertise as a player to guide the Hornets.

An outstanding professional tennis player, Sherry's credits include a Centre Court Wimbledon

match against Martina Navratilova in which she extended the world's former No.1 player to three sets. As

a teenager, Acker ended Chris Evert's string of winning sets at the U.S. Open. Sherry, who plans to continue

her playing career, recorded her biggest victory in capturing a tournament championship on the Avon

futures circuit.

Sherry was also very successful at the collegiate level. The native of Kalamazoo played varsity tennis

at the University of F1orida, capturing the 1978 NCAA Division I title in doubles competition.

Kalamazoo Gazette Sports Editor Jack Moss noted in his column, " ... her appointment launches a

bright new era in Kalamazoo College women's tennis."

14 Baseball Added Offense Could Help Hornets Pitching and defense can take a team a long way, but the fortunes of Kalamazoo College's baseball ) squad this spring may be determined by how well the Hornets swing the bat. Last season, pitching and defense were the cornerstones of the Hornet attack. Kalamazoo hurlers ) notched a 3.31 overall earned average, while the Hornet glovesmen produced a combined .957 fielding

average. Those numbers helped ''I<" compile a 15-16 overall record, including a 6-6 mark in the Michigan

Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

To get to the next level- namely, a winning record and shot at the MIAA championship- Kalamazoo

fourth-year coach Tim Pobuda believes his squad will have to produce more on offense.

"We hope to have solid pitching and we expect to play a consistent level of good defense," says

Pobuda. ''What will make or break us is how well we ."

A trio of seniors will lead the way. Andy Bradford (Schoolcraft) will head up the pitching staff, while

Paul Amodei (Detroit/Harper Woods Notre Dame) and centerfielder Charlie King (Ludington/

Morley-Stanwood) will respectively anchor the infield and outfield.

Bradford, who hurled his way to a 2.81 ERA last spring, ''has to have a quality start each time out,"

according to Pobuda, while Amodei will counted on to provide leadership on the field. Amodei, a fourth-year

starter and the team's captain for the second year, batted .290 last spring. Pobuda will also be relying heavily

on King's defensive skills in the outfield.

Kalamazoo has an excellent contingent of underclassmen and one of the most talented is junior

Ken Turkington (Fowlerville), an All-MIAA first team selection in 1989 who batted .351 in

league games. Another is All-MIAA second teamer Mike Siwajek (Royal Oak/Kimball), a sophomore who

plays first base and some outfield. Siwajek batted .3lllast spring and will need to duplicate or improve his

performance.

A key personnel change will take place at , where junior John Knittel (Livonia/Churchill) will

move after playing outfield last season. Knittel was the team's leading batter in '89 with a .414 average,

pacing the squad in extra-base hits and total bases. Freshman Phil Wilson (Rochester) will be Knittel's

15 Baseball Outlook - Continued

backup.

Juniors Joe Mackiewicz (Redford/Catholic Central) and Joe Trombley (Mount Clemens/Harper

Woods Notre Dame) will be important parts of the Hornet pitching equation. Mackiewicz- who delivered a

2.73 ERA in extensive action last season- will be Pobuda's second starter while Trombley wiii be the first

option when relief pitching is needed.

Sophomore Mike Arnsman (Allegan) and junior Andy Mears (Reedsviile, Wis./Saginaw Lutheran

Seminary) complete the pitching lineup. Arnsman's contribution may be limited, having just recently re

turned from foreign study, while Mears hopes to help out after seeing limited action last season.

Other underclassmen include junior Mike Porr (Port Jervis, NY /Minicick), who is the early favorite to

start at first base, and junior Mike Miller (Grosse Pointe/North). Miller plays solid defense and has

the ability to hit for power, but he is another player who has missed practice time due to foreign study.

Sophomore Ed Walsh (Northville) has been tabbed as the starting right fielder. Pobuda expects

plenty of production from Walsh, who he calls "a winner."

Among the freshmen expected to help out are Randy Jones (Northville) and outfielder

Mark Abbott (Marshall). Jones, who Pobuda calls "one of the better young hitters I've seen in a while," could

work into the lineup at third base, the outfield or as a designated hitter. Abbott's speed will be used in pinch

hitting and pinch running roles.

Kalamazoo has a slate of top NCAA Division III competition lined up for its spring trip to Florida,

which runs March 17-23. The Hornets will take on Amherst (MA), a perennial top 10 team, in their first game

and will wrap up the trip with a strong test NAJA power Defiance (OH).

Once back home, ''K" will set its sights on the league schedule and wresting the MIAA crown from

two-time defending champ Albion College. The regular season wiii end with a two-day tournament at

Chicago State University.

Young Sguad Thinking Big

With the program entering just its third season of intercollegiate competition, Kalamazoo College's softball team is already thinking big.

The Hornets showed plenty of promise last spring with a 10..11 overall record including 5-7 mark in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, good for fifth place in the conference. In 1990, Coach Joe

Haklin feels his club can move up in the standings with more production at the plate.

''We hope to add more punch to our offense while maintaining the quality level of pitching and defense we established last year," Haklin says.

With junior Heidi Reyst (Farmington Hills/Harrison) returning, the Hornets should again be strong on the mound. Reyst surrendered just 16 earned runs in 691/3 innings (1.62 earned run average) and walked only 10 batters last season. Kalamazoo, however, will need to replace sophomore Tiffany Greenman (South

Haven), a pitcher who is one of three players from last year who will miss the season due to foreign study.

Junior Chauntelle Minshall (Portage/Central)- who returns along with junior outfielder Jennifer

Duff (Rochester/Sterling Heights) after missing last seaon due to foreign study- will be Haklin's second option at pitcher.

While K's overall ERA last season was 2.28, the Hornet team batting average was a subpar .252. Led by 1989 team MVP Heather Ramsey (West Bloomfield), Kalamazoo should do better with the bat this spring.

Ramsey, a senior shortstop, got hot at the plate late in 1989 to finish with a .333 batting average.

"Last year was Heather's first year playing fast-pitch softball and it took her a little time to adjust," says Haklin. "I expect her to be an excellent hitter for us."

Ramsey is also an superb player on defense, with Haklin noting "she saved several ballgames for us last year with her glove alone."

Another player with offensive potential is sophomore outfielder Becky Rifenberg, who tied Ramsey for team batting honors (.333 average) in '89 and led the squad in extra-base hits.

"Becky can blossom into one of the better hitters in the (MIAA)," Haklin remarks. "She needed to make the transition to college ball last year and now that she's done that she can be a force."

21 Softball Outlook - Continued

Other leading returnees include senior catcher Teresa Johnson (Jackson), junior second baseman Kris

Bowman (Kalamazoo/Vicksburg), junior Coleen DeWitt (Madison Heights/Lamphere), junior

outfielder Tina Ritter (Schoolcraft) and sophomore infielder Amy Harnden (Augusta/Gull Lake). DeWitt and

Johnson will serve as the team's co-captains.

Kalamazoo's lone newcomer in 1990 is senior outfielder Heather Brady (Utica/Bloomfield Lahser).

The Hornets will open the season at Siena Heights, and play their first home games in an April 7

doubleheader against Olivet College. The MIAA tournament will take place May 3-4 at Hope College.

22 Head Coach Joe Haklin

Joe Haklin enters his third season as head coach of the rapidly-improving Kalamazoo College softball team. A native of Chesterton, Ind., Haklin was a three-sport athlete at Wabash College, gaining Academic All-

America status in basketball among other honors there. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate in history, Haklin has always stressed the need to balance academic achievement with athletic prowess. He taught and coached at

UniversitY Uggett High School in Grosse Pointe Woods, leading the school's baseball team to a state champi- onship in 1979. From 1979 to 1982, Haklin was an assistant basketball coach at Wayne State University, where he earned his master's degree.

Haklin recently completed his third season as head coach of the Hornet men's basketball team, having led the team a third-place MIAA finish for the second consecutive year.

He is assisted by Lisa Diment, who recently completed her second season as head coach of the

College's women's basketball team.
