Founded in 1833, it is among the 100 oldest colleges and universities in the nation. The excellence of its academic programs has earned the College a ''highly competitive" rating by Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. Nearly all of the 1,251 students are enrolled full time and live on campus, creating a . greater sense of community. The College has an excellent teaching faculty, most with doctorates in their fields. The student-faculty ratio of 12:1 affords small classes and personal attention to individual student needs. Kalamazoo offers 22 majors and five other areas of concentrated study. It is noted for strength in the sciences, pre-professional programs, economics and business administration, and foreign languages. The career development internship and foreign study programs are exceptional among all American colleges and universities. Over 80 percent of all Kalamazoo students participate in these off-campus experiences. The campus is located in an attractive residential area, minutes from the downtown business district. The city of Kalamazoo, the fifth-largest metropolitan center in Michigan, provides a wide variety of cultural, social and recreational opportunities. Midway between Chicago and Detroit on I-94, Kalamazoo is served by major bus lines, AMTRAK rail service and several airlines. 4 Men's Tennis Fifty-two in a Rcrw? While it might be tempting for Kalamazoo College's men's tennis team to rest on its laurels, to do so might also be dangerous. With many new faces this spring, the Homets will be very different from the squad that took third in NCAA Division III in 1989. This year's team, which has lost two of its top three players- two-time All American Dave Borski and Tim Hufler- to graduation, is made up of eight freshmen compared to just three seniors. How well the youth combines with experience may determine if Kalamazoo is able to continue its string of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships. Kalamazoo has won 51 consecutive MIAA crowns, a feat unmatched by any amateur, high school, college or professional team in America. Coach George Acker, who has led the Hornets to their last 31 league titles, is also hoping to keep Kalamazoo's record of success at the NCAAs alive. Kalamazoo has finished in the top 10 in each of the 14 years the Division III tournament has been held, and has finished lower than fifth just once. "We have a lot of unknown commodities this year," says Acker. "How well some of our new players fill in may well determine how successful we are." Two players who are not unknown are junior captains Jeff Field hack (Hartland, Wis./ Arrowhead High School) and Doug Keen (Leland), both of whom eamed All-American status last spring. Fieldhack was 21-11 in singles action last year and combined with Borski to make the NCAA quarterfinals in doubles. He is expected to play No. 1 singles this spring. Acker said Fieldhack, who played every day during his recent foreign study stay in France, appears ready for a successful season. "Jeff does not have a lot of powerful shots but he is tenacious," the coach says. "Other players will have to work hard to beat him." Keen played No. 4 singles last season and rolled to a team-best 29-5 match record, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. Acker said Keen is another player who gets by on consistent play rather than powerful 5 Men's Tennis Outlook- Continued strokes. Two juniors, captain Greg Wood (Anderson, Ind.) and Josh Williams (San Antonio, Tex./Winston Churchill), were the Hornets' most successful doubles team in '89 with a 12-1 record. Their play may be hindered by foreign study, however, with both players just recently returning to campus. Another question mark is sophomore Nathan Eddy (Allegan), who was 11-3 at No.6 singles as a freshman. Eddy's off-season practice time has been limited due to illness. Acker will be counting on three fourth-year players- seniors Mark Rampy (Midland/Dow), Dave Tyggum (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield Central) and Geoff Price (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos)- to fiii out the lineup. Tyggum played No. 5 singles as a sophomore while Rampy was the No. 6 singles player early last season. Sophomores James Osowski (El Paso, Tex./J.M. Hanks) and John Ray-Keil (Seattle, Wash./ Garfield) both will have an opportunity to crack the starting lineup. Other returning players include sophomore Neil Kool (Bidwell, Ohio/Gallia Academy) and juniors Scott Lochner (St. Joseph) and Robert Saxton (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest). One of the more highly-touted freshman is Lewis Miller (Oakton, Va.), a raw but talented player. Other frosh include Randy Blau (Bloomfield Hills/Lahser), Scott Brunka (Mount Vernon, Ohio), David Helfer (East Lansing), Tony Kirk (Houston, Tex./Clear Lake), Kyle Pullen (Ann Arbor/Pioneer), Mark Spitz-Nagel (Matteson, Ill./Rich South) and Chad VanZandt (Galesburg/Galesburg-Augusta). Kalamazoo, ranked fourth in NCAA Division III in a preseason poll, will face its usual slate of high caliber opponents this season. In all, "K" will take on a total of 12 NCAA Division I or Division II squads. The Hornets will be tested early, playing ninth-ranked Emory University (Ga.) and tenth-ranked University of the South (Tenn.) during their spring trip in March. During the regular season, top opponents will include Notre Dame, Michigan State and Western Michigan. Kalamazoo will defend its Great Lakes Colleges Association title April13-14 at Wabash, and wiii host the MIAA tournament May 3-4. This year's NCAA Division ill tournament will be held at May 13-20 at Swarthmore, Pa. 6 Men's Tennis 1990 Schedule Southern Trip Opponent Site Time Fri., Mar. 16 Vanderbilt Nashville, TN 2:00p.m. Sat., Mar. 17 U.ofSouth Sewanee, TN 1:00p.m. Mon., Mar. 19 Rollins Winter Park, FL 2:30p.m. Tue., Mar. 20 Central Florida Orlando,FL 2:00p.m. Wed., Mar. 21 Eckherd St. Petersburg, FL 2:00p.m. Fri., Mar. 23 U. of So.
