  • New and Extended Clearways on the Horsley Drive
New and extended clearways on The Horsley Drive Roads and Maritime Services | October 2018 The NSW Government is delivering faster, easier and safer travel on Sydney’s roads. From Monday 29 October 2018, new weekend and New clearways on The Horsley Drive extended weekday clearways will be operational on The Horsley Drive between Cumberland Highway, Smithfield and Hume Highway, Carramar. The clearway hours and location are shown on the map. Existing ‘No Parking’ and ‘No Stopping’ parking restrictions and sections of unrestricted parking will continue to operate outside the clearway hours. Bus zones will continue to operate with no change. Clearways help improve journey times for up to 42,000 motorists travelling on this section of The Horsley Drive every day by making available an additional lane to traffic during clearway hours, allowing motorists to get to reach their destination sooner. Community Feedback In August 2018, Roads and Maritime Services engaged with the community, businesses and key stakeholders about introducing new weekend and extended weekday clearways along this corridor. We asked the community for feedback in a number of ways including the distribution of letters to residents and local businesses and key stakeholders. We also doorknocked local businesses and contacted key stakeholders and held an Information Kiosk at Neeta City Shopping Centre, Fairfield. Additionally, we posted on Facebook to inform motorists and the broader community. During the engagement period, we received four enquiries and we responded to each member of the community directly. 1 What happens next? What is a clearway? After considering all the feedback received, Roads A clearway is a section of road where stopping and and Maritime will progress with installing the new parking is not allowed during the times shown on and extended clearways on The Horsley Drive the clearway sign.

  • MEDIA STATEMENT 29 July 2019 Australia's Major Highway Now a Conveyor Belt for Big Trucks
MEDIA STATEMENT 29 July 2019 Media contact: Paul Hitchins 0419 315 001 Australia’s major highway now a conveyor belt for big trucks 700,000 B-double truck trips on Hume Highway each year Rail freight on its deathbed between Melbourne & Sydney In a disturbing development, Australia’s largest rail freight operator, Pacific National has declared rail freight is on its deathbed between Melbourne and Sydney. Pacific National CEO Dean Dalla Valle said less than 1 per cent of 20-million tonnes of palletised and containerised freight transported between Melbourne and Sydney is now hauled by trains. “Australia’s busiest freight corridor by volume has become a conveyor belt of 700,000 B-double equivalent return truck trips each year along the Hume Highway1,” said Mr Dalla Valle. Mr Dalla Valle said excessive government charges applied to rail freight services and a build-up of red tape2 is suffocating the haulage of goods by rail between Australia’s two biggest cities. “Bizarrely, at a time when Australians want safer roads, less traffic congestion during their daily commute3, reduced vehicle emissions, and properly maintained roads4, government policies are geared to rolling out bigger and heavier trucks5 on more roads,” said Mr Dalla Valle. A 2016 report by Australian Automobile Association ranked sections of the Hume Highway as some of the nation’s most dangerous roads6, while a 2017 Deloitte Access Economics report found, for every tonne of freight hauled a kilometre, trucks produce 14 times greater accident costs than trains7. Mr Dalla Valle said trucks may not be the root cause of most accidents, but the sheer size, weight and momentum of a truck crashing with a car often results in casualties or fatalities.

Submission to House of Representatives Standing Committee on PRIMARY INDUSTRIES & REGIONAL SERVICES The Coorong District Council (SA) AUGUST 1999 Bill Paterson Chief Executive Officer Coorong District Council PO Box 28 Ph: (08) 8575 1008 Meningie SA 5264 Fax: (08) 8575 1516 Email: [email protected] L:\Infrastructure inq\Submissions\Electronic subs\sub291-e.doc Infrastructure on Primary Industries & Regional Services 1. INTRODUCTION The Coorong District Council comprises 8,836 square kilometers of mainly rural land serviced by the towns of Tailem Bend, Meningie, Tintinara and Coonalpyn and other smaller settlements. The resident population of the District is 6,000, with about half that number being concentrated in the towns. At any time the travelers on the main highways swell the actual number of persons in the area. Three highways being Dukes Highway, Princes Highway and Mallee Highway pass through the District carrying heavy and general traffic between South Australia and the eastern states. The Council maintains a total of 1,800 kilometers of unsealed and sealed roads throughout the District. The Adelaide - Melbourne railway line divides the District and is met by two regional feeder lines mainly carrying grain to Tailem Bend for storage and eventual movement by rail to Port Adelaide. The area has a growing tourism focus as people seek out the natural environment that is available through the extensive National Parks, which are a feature of the district. The Coorong National Park from which the District takes its name is of world significance as a wetland of international importance. Refer Appendix –1 & 5 When considering the Terms of Reference a significant numbers of areas could be addressed and we will touch on a few of those in the latter half of the submission.
