Walter ROTHSCHILD in 1894 from a male caught by Maxwell Stuart, a English Anaturalist well known for his Lepidopteran material obtained between the area of Yurimaguas and Iquitos, Peru (LAMAS, 1980). The type locality is the Cachiyacu River, South of Yurimaguas, but erroneously misspelled by subsequent authors as the “Cachyaco River”(FRUHSTORFER, 1905, 1916; STICHEL, 1939; RACHELI & RACHELI, 2001). Two years later the type deposited in the Natural History Museum collection of London, England (NHMUK) was figured by ROTHSCHILD (1896). Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society 39(4), 1985, 266-267 THE HOST PLANT, ERYTHROXYLUM (ERYTHROXYLACEAE), OF AGRIAS (NYMPHALIDAE) THOMASS. RAY School of Life & Health Sciences, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware 19716 ABSTRACT. A male of Agrias amydon philatelica DeVries was reared from its host plant, Erythroxylum jimbriatum Peyritsch, in the wet Caribbean lowland forests of Heredia Province, Costa Rica. This is the first host plant record for Agrias amydon. A male of Agrias amydon philatelica DeVries (DeVries, 1980) was reared from its host plant Erythroxylum fimbriatum Peyritsch, at Fin ca La Selva, an Organization for Tropical Studies field station in the wet Caribbean lowland forests of Heredia Province, Costa Rica. This is the first host plant record for Agrias amydon. In March 1979, a penultimate instar larva was found feeding on a 2.5 m individual of E. fimbriatum in the forest. The plant was a member of a clump of five individuals of E. fimbria tum within a space of 100 m along the Holdridge Trail. The plants have been vouchered and deposited in the Duke University Herbarium, Hammel 8929, Kress 76-526. The larva was fed in the lab on leaves from the same plant. Pupation occurred on the upper surface of the cage. The adult emerged in April. The last larval shed skin and head capsule, the empty chrys alis, and the preserved adult were deposited in the collections of the Museum of Comparative Zoology of Harvard University. The speci men was designated a paratype by DeVries (1980). Previous records of the subspecies, all since 1977, were from the Pacific lowland dry forests in Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, the Caribbean lowland wet forests of Herrera Province, Panama, and Fin ca La Selva (DeVries, 1980). -

ARCHAEOPREPONA DEMOPHON CENTRALlS (NYMPHALIDAE) ALBERTO M UYSHONDT 101 Avenida Norte #322, San Salvador, El Salvador During August 1971, one of my sons found a strange-looking larva on a very small unknown shrub in a ravine near the city of San Salvador. The larva unfortunately died before pupating due to the lack of food. We could not identify the shrub because it was not in flower, and our efforts to substitute other similar plants for food were unsuccessful. Two years later, we found a female Archaeoprepona demophon centralis Fruhstor fer (Charaxinae) ovipositing on a larger flowering shrub and were able to rear the species to adult. The larvae were the same as the single specimen collected in 1971. Since that time we have reared the species several times. The rearing was done inside transparent plastic bags. The larvae were kept supplied with fresh leaves of the foodplant. The plastic bags were cleaned daily of excess moisture and excreta. Shortly before pupation, the larvae were transferred to a wooden box with mosquito-net windows. The adults emerged in the same box. Measurements of the different instars were recorded, and photographs were taken of all developmental stages. Some specimens of the early stages and exuvia were preserved in alcohol. These will be sent to the American Museum of Natural History, New York. The adults were determined by Dr. A. H. B. Rydon, the foodplant by Dr. D. Burch, University of South Florida. Descriptions of the morphology with illustrations are presented, based upon observations through scanning electron microscopy and stereoscopic and optic microscopes attached to a camera lucida. Descriptions and illustrations of the head capsule, chaetotaxy, tegument, and setae are presented. The taxonomy, morphological characters, and host plant use of Prepona laertes immature stages are discussed. Resumo Descreve-se a morfologia externa e a ultra-estrutura tegumentar do ovo e larvas de primeiro ínstar de Prepona laertes laertes (Hübner, [1811]) coletados sobre Inga spp. (Fabaceae) em fragmentos florestais em Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brasil. As características morfológicas são descritas e ilustradas, como resultado de observações em microscópio eletrônico de varredura, e microscópios estereoscópico e ótico acoplado à câmera clara. Descrições e ilustrações da quetotaxia da cápsula cefálica e do corpo são apresentadas, além da morfologia externa das cerdas e tegumento. -

We must stress however that comparisons of faunistic lists of different sites are always difficult to be made due to differences in area size, to divergence in classification, and to the differences of the operators techniques. Therefore it is often uneasy to deal with sets of data and to compare the results. None the less, surveys and comparisons of butterflies in selected sites of the Neotropical realm seem to be very popular nowadays (Lamas , 1983a, 1983b; Lamas et al., 1991; Raguso & Llorente , 1991; Austin et al., 1996; Balcazar , 1993). They are particularly aimed at gathering sets of data tor conservation purposes and at identifying hotspots of endemicity. Dramatic is the lacking of published long-term surveys on moths in limited areas of the Neotropics. Unexpectedly, no recent faunistic lists of Ecuadorian butterflies have appeared except that of Ma- quipucuna Reserve on the western side of the country (Raguso & G loster , 1996). Having observed butterflies, Saturniids and Hawkmoths for almost 15 years in Ecuador, as Clench (1979) suggests, the time is arrived to submit a survey of these taxa occuring in an Amazonian area of Ecuador. -

Box 112710, Gainesville, Florida 32611 Abstract - Two species of Agrias (Nymphalidae: Charaxiinae), A. claudina and A. amydon, are known from central Rondônia, Brazil. Their phenology and variation are discussed and illustrated. Key words: Agrias, Lepidoptera, neotropical, phenology, variation. The genus Agrias (Nymphalidae: Charaxinae) includes Barselou (1983). The population at Cacaulândia seems best between four (Barselou, 1983) and nine (Späth in D’Abrera referred to A. c. sardanapalus, but exhibits apparent phenotypic 1987; see also Fruhstorfer in Seitz 1907-1924, Rebillard 1961, intermediacy towards Agrias claudina croesus Staudinger, 1896.
