The Shakespeare Theatre Company Free For All at Carter Barron Amphitheatre in Rock Creek Park has become a cherished Washington tradition of enjoying free Shakespeare under the stars. The Free For All proved an enormous success its first year, attracting more than 2,500 theatregoers each night. More than 500,000 people have attended the Free For All since its inaugural performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor in 1991. Free For All audience members live throughout the Washington area, including in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland and Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William counties in Virginia.

Diverse audiences flock to see some of Shakespeare’s greatest plays each summer—including Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night, , , and King Lear—performed by Shakespeare Theatre Company actors and guest artists such as Sabrina LeBeauf, Kelly McGillis, Paul Winfield and Harry Hamlin. The 2008 Free For All production will be Hamlet, running from May 22 through June 1. The 2007 production of Love’s Labor’s Lost drew 24,000 patrons in its 10-day run. The Free For All’s contribution to the community has been recognized with The Washington Post Distinguished Service Award and the Public Humanities Award from the Humanities Council of Washington, D.C.
