Order CICONIIFORMES: , and Allies We recognise only herons, ibises and their allies as members of the Ciconiiformes, following Cracraft et al. (2004) who showed that the use of Ciconiiformes to include most of the non-passerines, sensu Sibley & Monroe (1990), is untenable as the taxon is then paraphyletic.

Southern New Guinea and Australia. Straggler to Tasmania and New Zealand. First recorded at Appleby, near Nelson, in 1925 (Moncrieff 1925). Minor irruptions in 1957 (Falla 1958) and 1975, probably of young (subadult) birds, which, during their stay, apparently drifted north (Heather 1978). Last record was Helensville, 1989 (Taylor 1990). Two records from Norfolk Island, 1975 (McKean et al. 1976) and 1976 (Moore 1981).
