I’m also working with Tommy Lee James on . Tommy was part of her first record with Paul Worley and most of the background vocals are his. They’re writing a lot together, and the demos they played me that he co-wrote had a really great sound. He’s part of her comfort zone. They’re in the same creative space, so I didn’t want to mess with that. I also have two or three I can’t really talk about yet. Couple iconic, non-country kind of projects. You’ve spent 24 years in a . Is it something you considered trying to do again? Did you get any offers? Or is now just a good time to be independent? Getting permission [from Universal] to do Brooks & Dunn was like jumping through hoops of fire. But I didn’t know who would come through my door if people knew I could produce anybody I wanted. That includes contemporary Christian acts, bluegrass acts, whoever. At MCA we had , , Reba, Trisha, Strait, Wynonna, , Lyle Lovett – I didn’t have time to go outside. When I started Universal South with Tim DuBois, since I was going to be an owner, I scaled back my producing. I did sort of put some feelers out to other labels. You look around Nashville and there’s really no place to go for a president’s job. But I put some feelers about being an A&R person and thought they could just call me “creative officer.” Nobody really came at me with an incredible deal until I decided to do this. That’s when I got a call. I told them, “If you’d hit me two months ago I’d have probably taken you up on your offer.” I must admit, I had my freak out period of not having an expense account, not having an IT department – all the stuff that comes along with working at a large corporation. Health insurance! But once I got here, and I really feel lucky to get to sit in Chet Atkins’ office, I realized I made the right decision. A lot of things are starting to crop up. Things I’d hoped would happen are starting to happen. I’d love to produce a record on Gretchen Wilson. She’s one of the greatest singers in the business. And there are other people I’d like to do records on, but I don’t want to list them all.
