The new principal will begin work next week. Mulkey, who has held the slot since 2009, is stepping down to the dual posi- tions of dean of students and athletic director. Superintendent Dawn Granger said Holland quickly stood out among the job candidates considered by the district. “I actually found him to be exactly what

Straying politicians’ 50 shades

Much has been written about adulterous politicians and the public’s apparent will- ingness to look past their infidelity. This lumps very different kinds of cheating into one neat sin, equally applicable to all sneaks. But just as “theft” covers everything from armed bank robbery to lifting a bag of chips, cheating on one’s spouse may entail a wide range of misdeeds and gray areas. Following are five shades of gray, a kind of scoring system for judging the political import of a politician’s extramarital affairs: 1. How they affect job performance. Grants, scholarships top paying for college WASHINGTON (AP) — Grants and scholarships are taking a leading role in paying college bills, surpassing the traditional role parents long have played in helping foot the bills, according to a report from loan giant Sallie Mae. Since the recession, more college-bound students have eliminated schools from their searches based on costs and have relied less on their par- ents once they get to campus, said the report released today. Tuition increases and job loss worries seem to have faded as the economy has improved, yet parents and students still make decisions on schools, majors and work schedules based on the price tag. The annual survey of stu- dent financial aid found stu- dents earned about $6,300 in grants and scholarships to pay for college costs, taking the top spots from parents. Student loans were the third most common source to pick up the bill for courses, hous- ing and books.

Lots of things, say travel experts, some of which remains known to the air- line industry alone. But there’s a lot we can know and things we can do to make sure we bag the best bargains on airfare this summer. BEST TIME TO BOOK. It takes a few hours to get through the system, says Seaney, mak- ing 3 p.m. the time when the most cheap seats flood the system. Don’t wait until the weekend to buy your tickets because fares tend to creep back up by then, adds travel expert Peter Greenberg. CHEAPEST DAYS TO FLY. The cheapest days to ROSE IS ROSE fly are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, says Seaney. It’s all about supply and demand and since histori- cally these are the days that fewer businesspeople fly, more seats are available. And the cheapest time to fly is the first flight of the day, flights that originate around noon and those at dinnertime. Why? Most people don’t want to have to get up that early to get to LUANN the airport, nor do they prefer to fly at mealtime. WHEN TO SHOP. Traveling next November? Don’t book your flight quite yet. With airline travel, ear- lier is not always better. According to Greenberg, the ideal time frame to book a flight is between 45 and 35 days ahead of your depar- ture date. BOOK ONLINE? The South Coast All-Stars are headed to the 13- to 15-year-old Babe Ruth regionals again. The local team, with players from several South Coast commu- nities, swept host Klamath Falls in the Southern Oregon State Tournament over the weekend to advance to the regional tourna- ment. The South Coast nearly got two teams to regionals, but the 14- year-old prep team lost in the championship game at Klamath Falls. The 13-year-old prep team was eliminated in the first round of the elimination bracket. Since South Coast and Klamath Falls were the only teams with 13- to 15-year-old squads, they played a best-of-three series. But South Coast only needed two games to win the title.
