  • Music Data Mining Presents a Variety of Approaches to Successfully Employ Data Mining Techniques for the Purpose of Music Processing
Computer Science Chapman & Hall/CRC Music Data Mining Chapman & Hall/CRC Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery Series Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery Series The research area of music information retrieval has gradually evolved to address the challenges of effectively accessing and interacting large collections of music and associated data, such as styles, artists, Music Data lyrics, and reviews. Bringing together an interdisciplinary array of top researchers, Music Data Mining presents a variety of approaches to successfully employ data mining techniques for the purpose of music processing. Mining The book first covers music data mining tasks and algorithms and audio feature extraction, providing a framework for subsequent chapters. With a focus on data classification, it then describes a computational approach inspired by human auditory perception and examines instrument recognition, the effects of music on moods and emotions, and the connections between power laws and music aesthetics. Given the importance of social aspects in understanding music, the text addresses the use of the Web and peer-to-peer networks for both music data mining and evaluating music mining tasks and algorithms. It also discusses indexing with tags and explains how data can be collected using online human computation games. The final chapters offer a balanced exploration of hit song science as well as a look at symbolic musicology and data mining. and Tzanetakis and The multifaceted nature of music information often requires Ogihara, Li, algorithms and systems using sophisticated signal processing and machine-learning techniques to better extract useful information. An excellent introduction to the field, this volume presents state-of- the-art techniques in music data mining and information retrieval to create novel ways of interacting with large music collections.

Doctor of Philosophy (Chemistry), December 2003, 326 pp, 24 tables, 95 illustrations, 419 references. Nanocrystalline cerium oxide thin films on metal and semiconductor substrates have been fabricated with a novel electrodeposition approach – anodic oxidation. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that as-produced cerium oxide films are characteristic face-centered cubic fluorite structure with 5 ~ 20 nm crystal sizes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study probes the non- stoichiometry property of as-produced films. Raman spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy have been applied to analyze the films as well. Deposition mode, current density, reaction temperature and pH have also been investigated and the deposition condition has been optimized for preferred oriented film formation: galvanostatic deposition with current density of –0.06 mA/cm2, T > 50oC and 7 < pH < 10. Generally, potentiostatic deposition results in random structured cerium oxide films. Sintering of potentiostatic deposited cerium oxide films leads to crystal growth and reach nearly full density at 1100oC. It is demonstrated that in-air heating favors the 1:2 stoichiometry of CeO2.

HONORS COLLABORATIVE PRESENTATION ABSTRACT Brenda Benkenstein, Julia Bitterly, Josh Coursey, Eddie Espineli, Taylor Fayle, Emiliano Herrera III, Stephanie Hollomon, Jeanette Kutach, Alicia Macken, Amber Martinez, Daniel Massey, Patrick Nguyen, Juanita Sena, Carolyn Stalzer, Michael Wells. FACULTY SPONSOR: Rev. Anthony E. Giampietro, C.S.B., The most fundamental unit of society is the family, the institution whose purpose and structure shape an individual through moral, practical and intellectual education. Over the past few decades, however, society has lost sight of the ideal structure of family and its true purpose. This problem is evidenced by growing divorce rates, single-parent homes and absent fathers, poor interfamilial relationships, increased sexual promiscuity, the escalation of violence, and the retreat of youth into pop culture and gangs. To confront these and other societal ills, we will first examine why these situations are harmful to the individual, family, and society. In addition, we will explore obstacles challenging the contemporary family, including the American concept of individuality, materialism, the rise of women in the workplace, reproductive technology, and the media. The objective of this collaborative and interdisciplinary project is to provide viable solutions for change within the limits of every family’s capacity, regardless of racial, religious, or socioeconomic background. We not only embrace these solutions in our own lives, but also encourage each member of society to do the same, so that we may pass
