Czerniewski, who captured the Harlon Hill Trophy as the Division II National Player of the Year honors, garnered Don Hansen Offensive Player of the Year accolades. Schiechel, who finished second behind Slippery Rock offensive center Brandon Fusco for the Gene Upshaw Award as the National Lineman of the Year recognition, received Don Hansen National Defensive Player of the Year honors. Fusco, a first-team All-America selection, received the eighth annual NCAA-II Rimington Award as the division’s top offensive center. † Angelo State return specialist Garrett Tidwell, who returned three kicks for scores and ranked in the top 10 nationally in both punt returns and kickoff returns, was selected the Don Hansen National Special Teams Player of the Year. Bloomsburg running back Franklyn Quiteh, who led Division II in rushing with 2,015 yards and 22 touchdowns, and Pittsburg State linebacker Nate Dreiling, who led the division in tackles (160, 13.3 pg), shared Don Hansen National Freshman of the Year honors. Minnesota Duluth’s Bob Nielson, who led the Bulldogs to an unblemished 15-0 record and the school’s second NCAA Division II National Championship in three years, shared Don Hansen National Coach of the Year honors with Mercyhurst’s Marty Schaetzle, who led one of the division’s most compelling turnarounds in 2010 with a 10-3 record and an NCAA-II second-round playoff appearance after a 4-7 campaign in 2009.

Allen Defensive POY, E. Allen Special Teams POY, Martin Freshman POY, Wristen Coach of the Year PITTSBURG, Kan. — Harlon Hill Trophy winning quarterback Jason Vander Laan of Ferris State and Gene Upshaw Award winning defensive end Darius Allen of NCAA Division II national champion Colorado State-Pueblo headline a talented 2014 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America Team. Vander Laan, who captured the Harlon Hill Trophy as the Division II National Player of the Year honors, garnered Don Hansen Offensive Player of the Year accolades. A junior from Frankfort, Ill., Vander Laan rushed for 1,466 yards and 20 touchdowns and he completed 183 of 275 passes for 2,381 yards and 30 touchdowns with just seven interceptions (198.4 rating), helping the Bulldogs to the GLIAC title and an 11-1 overall record. Allen, a senior from Pueblo, Colo., captured the Gene Upshaw Award as the Division II Lineman of the Year for a second straight year. He made 72 tackles (39 solo) with 23.0 tackles-for-loss and 15.5 quarterback sacks during the ThunderWolves’ championship run. Ouachita Baptist return specialist Etauj Allen, who led Division II with three punt returns for touchdowns and averaged 18.5 yards per return, was selected the Don Hansen National Special Teams Player of the Year. Slippery Rock defensive end Marcus Martin, who made 68 tackles (29 solo) with 22.5 tackles-for-loss and 16.0 quarterback sacks, was named the Don Hansen National Freshman of the Year honors.

POY, Dreiling Def. POY, Zuerlein Spec. Teams POY, Beck Coach of the Year PITTSBURG, Kan. —Harlon Hill Trophy winning running back Jonas Randolph of Mars Hill and consensus All-America linebacker Nate Dreiling of National Champion Pittsburg State headline a talented 2011 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All- America Team. Randolph, who captured the Harlon Hill Trophy as the Division II National Player of the Year honors, garnered Don Hansen Offensive Player of the Year accolades. A senior from Daleville, Ala., Randolph rushed the ball 366 times for 2,170 yards and 18 touchdowns on the season, leading Division II with a 197.3 yard per game average. He guided the Lions to an 8-3 record and an NCAA-II playoff appearance. Dreiling, who helped lead the Gorillas to the school’s first national championship in 20 years, received Don Hansen National Defensive Player of the Year honors. A sophomore from Hutchinson, Kan., Dreiling made 139 tackles, including 17.0 TFLs, with seven interceptions, six pass breakups and two forced fumbles while helping Pitt State capture the NCAA- II National Championship. He made 46 tackles (11.5 pg) with 7.0 TFLs and three interceptions in the post-season. Missouri Western place kicker Greg Zuerlein, who converted a nation-leading 23 of 24 field goals including all nine attempts from 50 yards and beyond, was selected the Don Hansen National Special Teams Player of the Year.

The trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. The 12 finalists will each receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 58th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 8, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. At the event, one member of the class will be declared in dramatic fashion the winner of the 26th William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000. A Material Mechanics major with a 3.91 G.P.A., Garcia has been named as the winner of the Division II Academic All-America of the Year award for the football team. The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 D-II Academic All-America® teams program. Four members of the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Division II Football first team and eight members of the second team represent teams that qualified for the NCAA Division II Football Championship, including two first team members from St. Cloud State. Ohio Dominican led all schools with three first team selections while Indianapolis, St. Cloud State and Fairmont State each had two first team selections. A two-year starter, Garcia led the Miners to an 8-3 record this season. A repeat selection as a member of the Capital One Academic All-America® Football first team, he completed 273-of-435 passes for 3,123 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2011. A two-time selection as All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference first team, he is ranked 10th in NCAA Division II, averaging 283.45 passing yards per game.

Bell, who captured the Division II National Player of the Year honors, earned Offensive Back of the Year honors. Jake Soy of Division II National Champion NW Missouri State was named the Receiver of the Year, while Staggs garnered Offensive Lineman of the Year accolades. Jack Hiett of Nebraska-Kearney received the seventh annual NCAA-II Rimington Award as the division’s top offensive center. † On defense, Drew Berube of Hillsdale claimed Lineman of the Year honors, while Mike Johnson of North Alabama earned Linebacker of the Year. Quintez Smith of Shaw earned Defensive Back of the Year. Punter Justin Hinson of UNC-Pembroke and return specialist Jerome Hewitt of Southeastern Oklahoma shared the Specialist of the Year award. Northwest Missouri State’s Mel Tjeerdsma, who led the Bearcats to their fifth straight appearance in the NCAA-II National Championship Game and the school’s third national championship, earned National Coach of the Year honors for the second time in as many seasons. Tjeerdsma shared the honors with Minnesota Duluth’s Bob Nielson in 2008. Bell, a senior from Detroit, rushed for 2,084 yards and 29 touchdowns to capture the Harlon Hill Trophy as the national player of the year.
