UNA’s Mark Hedspeth, who led the Lions from a 4-7 season in 2002 to a 13-1 record and an NCAA-II semifinalist finish in 2003, was named the National Coach of the Year. Hall and University of Nebraska-Omaha running back Justin Kammrad, who finished 1-3 in the 2003 Harlon Hill Trophy balloting, earned Co-Offensive Back of the Year honors. Ellis Debrow of Delta State University was named the Receiver of the Year, while Tyronne Armstrong of Pittsburg State University earned Offensive Lineman of the Year. Kevin Palmer of Texas A&M University-Kingsville received the inaugural Division II Rimington Award as the division’s top offensive center †. On defense, Aaron McConnell of Pittsburg State University was named Lineman of the Year honors, while Holland earned Linebacker of the Year and Ricardo Colclough of Tusculum College earned Defensive Back of the Year. Individually, Hall ranked 12th nationally in total offense, directing an UNA offense that ranked fifth in Division II in scoring (38.8 ppg) and 16th in total offense (446.3 ypg) as a team. Holland, a senior from Scranton, Pa., recorded 132 tackles (76 solo) with eight tackles-for-loss and 2.0 quarterback sacks. Holland ranked in a tie for sixth in Division II in total tackles (12.0 pg), helping Mansfield post an 8-3 overall record. This marks the 16th year Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, a recognized authority on small college football, has selected an NCAA Division II All-America team. The national publication selected All-Region teams with the first-team and second-team All-Region players from each of the four geographic regions (Northeast, South, Midwest, West) making up the national ballot, which was voted upon by a 21-member national panel. A total of 134 players earned some form of Football Gazette All-America honors. Players from 68 of the 148 football- playing schools in Division II earned Football Gazette All-America accolades. National champion Grand Valley State along with three other schools – North Alabama, Tarleton State and Winona State – led the way with five players each named to the Football Gazette All-America teams. The Rimington Trophy website is located at http://www.rimingtontrophy.com. Esiason, a high-octane Maryland quarterback, and Rimington, a nonpareil center for Nebraska, were NFL teammates at Cincinnati in the mid-1980s. In 1993, Esiason created the New York City based foundation that bears his name to raise funds for the treatment and research of cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease his 13-year-old son Gunnar has had since infancy. — ADD — 2003 Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-America Team… page 2 First Team Offense POS NAME HT WT YR SCHOOL HOMETOWN HIGH SCHOOL QB Will Hall 5-8 184 SR North Alabama Amory, Miss.
