PITTSBURG, Kan. — Trophy winning Will Hall from Division II National Semifinalist University of North Alabama and finalist linebacker Dan Holland from Mansfield University headline a talented 2003 Don Hansen’s Football Gazette NCAA Division II All-America team. UNA’s Mark Hedspeth, who led the Lions from a 4-7 season in 2002 to a 13-1 record and an NCAA-II semifinalist finish in 2003, was named the National Coach of the Year. Hall and University of Nebraska-Omaha running back Justin Kammrad, who finished 1-3 in the 2003 Harlon Hill Trophy balloting, earned Co-Offensive Back of the Year honors. Ellis Debrow of Delta State University was named the Receiver of the Year, while Tyronne Armstrong of Pittsburg State University earned Offensive Lineman of the Year. Kevin Palmer of Texas A&M University-Kingsville received the inaugural Division II Rimington Award as the division’s top offensive center †. On defense, Aaron McConnell of Pittsburg State University was named Lineman of the Year honors, while Holland earned Linebacker of the Year and Ricardo Colclough of Tusculum College earned Defensive Back of the Year. Kicker David Hendrix of NCAA-II National Champion Grand Valley State University was named Specialist of the Year. Hall, a senior from Amory, Miss., led Division II in passing efficiency (173.3 rating), completing 267 of 372 passes (.718) for 3,531 yards and 30 TDs. He also carried the ball 154 times for 467 yards and five TDs, accumulating 3,998 yards of total offense (285.6 ypg). Individually, Hall ranked 12th nationally in total offense, directing an UNA offense that ranked fifth in Division II in scoring (38.8 ppg) and 16th in total offense (446.3 ypg) as a team. Holland, a senior from Scranton, Pa., recorded 132 tackles (76 solo) with eight tackles-for-loss and 2.0 quarterback sacks. He also blocked three kicks, finishing fourth in the Harlon Hill Trophy balloting – the highest finish for a defensive player since Ronald McKinnon of North Alabama won the award in 1995. Holland ranked in a tie for sixth in Division II in total tackles (12.0 pg), helping Mansfield post an 8-3 overall record. This marks the 16th year Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, a recognized authority on small , has selected an NCAA Division II All-America team. The national publication selected All-Region teams with the first-team and second-team All-Region players from each of the four geographic regions (Northeast, South, Midwest, West) making up the national ballot, which was voted upon by a 21-member national panel. A total of 134 players earned some form of Football Gazette All-America honors. Players from 68 of the 148 football- playing schools in Division II earned Football Gazette All-America accolades. National champion Grand Valley State along with three other schools – North Alabama, Tarleton State and Winona State – led the way with five players each named to the Football Gazette All-America teams. † The Boomer Esiason Foundation, which established the Dave in 2000 to honor the outstanding Division I-A center, expanded that award in 2003 to include the top center on each of the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette Division I-AA, II, III and NAIA All-America squads. The Rimington Trophy website is located at http://www.rimingtontrophy.com. Esiason, a high-octane Maryland quarterback, and Rimington, a nonpareil center for Nebraska, were NFL teammates at Cincinnati in the mid-1980s. In 1993, Esiason created the New York City based foundation that bears his name to raise funds for the treatment and research of cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease his 13-year-old son Gunnar has had since infancy.
