The site is located in Church Bay, Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland, at latitude 55º 17.1500′ N, longitude 06° 12.4036′ W (WGS 84). The work was undertaken as part of the Contract for Archaeological Services in Relation to the Protection of Wrecks Act (1973). Work was conducted in accordance with a brief that required WA to locate archaeological material, provide an accurate location for the wreck, determine the extent of the seabed remains, identify and characterise the main elements of the site and assess the remains against the non-statutory criteria for designation. Diving operations took place between 28th July and 5th August 2006. In addition to the diver assessment a limited desk-based assessment has been undertaken in order to assist with the interpretation and reporting of the wreck. -

Ian was also responsible for the management of the project in its first year. OUR WAR GRAVES YOUR HISTORY Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery Points of interest… Commemorations: 691 First World War: 455 Second World War: 207 Casualties from the following nations; Australia Canada Scapa Flow was a Royal Naval base during both the First and Second World Wars. Germany The arrival of the Grand Fleet at Scapa in 1914 transformed Orkney into one of the India world’s most important strategic locations. Sailors began burying their shipmates New Zealand at Lyness in 1915, and the cemetery remained in use until 1946. Norway During the Second World War, Scapa was once again a vital harbour for the Royal Navy. This time, as many as 12,000 military personnel and civilian workers came to Orkney, not just the ships of the fleet. A large naval base grew next to the Things to look out for… cemetery - hundreds of huts were constructed, and shore-based hospital facilities as well as hospital ships cared for the sick and wounded brought back to Scapa. 15 boy sailors including The church hut was next to the cemetery and a new gate was made in the wall to F.D. Tavender of the Royal make it easier for funeral parties to enter the site. It involved more ships than any previous naval battle. It also came at an awkward time in the development of power-driven warships. Their speed was much greater, but communication by radio was still in its infancy and radar had not been invented, while funnel smoke made communications by flags or light much more difficult. The potential for things to go wrong – always very great in sea battles – was greater than ever. There was, understandably, public disappointment with the result, but there is no doubt that it was fought with the highest courage and determination under the most difficult and challenging conditions. Whatever the judgement on the outcome, this commemoration of the centenary of the Battle is focused on the endurance and gallantry of all those who took part, on both sides, and particularly, on those who lost their lives. -

The Loss of His Majesty’s Ship Hampshire on 5 June 1916. Part One – The Times Account Summary With the sinking of HMS Hampshire came a grievous blow to the Allied war effort. The British Empire lost Lord Kitchener, the Secretary of State for War, whose organisational ability ensured that Britain had an army, of sufficient size, to be able to stand alongside her Allies in a major European conflict. Kitchener was a personality who was instantly familiar to all British people, both young and old, whose death was mourned as if he had been a close relative. Then, there were the families who lost fathers and sons. In addition to the crew, who numbered around 650, was Kitchener’s delegation, consisting of military officers, politicians and their staffs, who also went down with the Hampshire. Only 12 men, all from the Ship’s company, survived the disaster. Introduction The study was born when the Author discovered one of the survivors, Walter Farnden, was a West Sussex man.
