Back in 1987, no one associated with this ABC World News textbook project imagined that the series would have such longevity and touch the lives of so many students. We were honored that the series received the LET Award for Innovative Teaching Materials in 2010. We believe that adopting authentic broadcast news materials for classroom use is a powerful way to build English skills while also helping students to become more knowledgeable about world affairs and to develop the critical thinking necessary for all young people in today’s increasingly interconnected world.     The Church, Abortion, and Sister Margaret Ellen Traxler Robert McClory “A Chicago nun’s battle with Rome” Chicago Magazine, December 1985 Used with Permission At 11 p.m. on December 7, 1984, Sister Margaret Ellen Traxler had just finished night prayers in her small room at St. Patrick’s parish convent, on Chicago’s Far Southeast Side, when the telephone rang. The caller was Sister Maureen Murray, a superior of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Roman Catholic religious order to which Traxler belongs. “Peggy, I’m afraid I have some bad news,” said Murray, who then proceeded to read a letter that the international president of the order had just received. It was from Archbishop Jean Jerome Hamer, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation on Religious and Secular Institutes-in other words, the man who oversees the affairs of Catholic nuns all over the world. The letter stated, in effect, that the authorities in her order should demand that Traxler recant a public declaration that she had signed two months earlier. Appearing as a full-page advertisement in The New York Times, the declaration had challenged the church’s official teaching on abortion. If Traxler refused to recant, Hamer’s letter said, she was to be threatened with removal from the order. Similar letters had been sent to the superiors of 23 other U.S. nuns and of two priests and two religious brothers who had signed the same declaration. There could be no doubt about the intent: the offenders were in serious trouble, and the Vatican meant business.

Introduction for Teachers Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America is an American history story and a womenʼs history story. This teachers guide and the traveling exhibit it is based on present the innovative women whose passion for justice helped shape our nationʼs social and cultural landscape. Since first arriving in America nearly 300 years ago, sisters established schools, colleges, hospitals, orphanages, homeless shelters, and many other enduring social institutions that addressed critical social needs. As nurses, teachers, and social workers, sisters entered professional ranks decades earlier than most other women. Their work provided blueprints for the nationʼs educational and healthcare systems that continue to serve millions of Americans from all walks of life. Religious commitment is integral to the story of Catholic sisters, and their spiritual life calls them to respond to those who are in need. Women & Spirit focuses on sistersʼ achievements in working with communities they have served. The exhibit brings to light hundreds of unsung heroes and documents a vital and significant perspective on American history.

  • Sister Geraldine Mcnamara, OP (1927 – 2014)
    Sister Geraldine McNamara, OP (1927 – 2014) Sister Geraldine McNamara was born on March 27, 1927, in Chicago to John and Bertha (Monahan) McNamara. She was the fifth of their six children, preceded by James, John, Jerome and Robert and followed by William. The McNamaras were a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins who often gathered at their home for Sunday dinners and holiday celebrations. Geraldine and her brothers attended Catholic elementary schools on the south side of Chicago. After graduating from Aquinas High School in 1944, Gerry attended Siena Heights College (now University) in Adrian at her father’s urging. She wanted to attend Mundelein College so she could be home on weekends because her older brothers were in military service overseas. But her father prevailed and Gerry attended Siena Heights for three semesters. At the mid-point of her sophomore year, Gerry entered the Congregation on February 2, 1946. She was given the name Sister Jean Immaculate at her reception and on August 14, 1947, she made first profession. From 1947 to 1959, Sister Geraldine was assigned to teach in the following elementary schools: two years at Visitation in Detroit, five years at St. Brendan School in San Francisco, one year at St. Laurence in Chicago, two years at St. Kilian in Chicago and two years at St. Edmund in Oak Park, Illinois. In the fall of 1995, the St. Brendan newsletter, Voyager, included an article about the school’s Alumni Faculty. Cohen March 5, 2013 It was minutes before game time and the Loyola Ramblers entered the tunnel, ready to rush onto the basketball court. But there was one last order of business. The team huddled with a 5-foot-tall, 93-year-old nun wearing a Nike workout top, black skirt and maroon sneakers with gold laces. "Sister" was embroidered on the heel of one shoe. "Jean" on the other. The players bowed their heads. "As we face the Vikings today, we know what we have to do. We can win and we are going to go out there and do it," said Sister Jean, who stands nearly two feet below the tallest player. "We want to watch especially No. 3 and No. 21 and No. 33. We have beaten them before and we can do it again. So get in there and do it well and don't get hurt." "Amen." Officially, Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt is the chaplain for Loyola University Chicago's men's basketball team. But after nearly 20 years in that position, she's become so much more. Students chant "Sis-ter Jean" before games, and referees pose for pictures with her. She even has her own bobblehead. The tiny woman with the short white hair and thick trifocals is the team's adopted grandmother, or more aptly given her years, its great-grandmother. On Saturday her prayers came true when the team won its last regular-season game, 87-60, against Cleveland State University before going on the road for the Horizon League playoffs that begin Tuesday night.
