Two th Century Ottoman Sufi Mysteries – An Historiographical Essay Part II: The Case of Ümmi Kemal* Bill Hickman** XV. Yüzyıl Osmanlı Sufiliğinde İki Esrarlı Nokta – Tarih Yazıcılığı Açısından Bir Deneme Bölüm II: Ümmi Kemal Örneği Öz Onbeşinci yüzyıl Anadolu tekke edebiyatında Ümmi Kemal iyi bilinen bir şairdir. Ancak Divanı’nda geçen isimler haricinde hayatı hakkında pek az bilgi vardır. Pek detaylı olmasa da Divanı’ndan Safevi tarikatı mensuplarıyla olan ilgisi anlaşılır. Kemal’in yaşadığı devire yakın menkıbevi kaynaktaki bir hikaye onun katledildiğini ima eder ve sonraki biyografilere temel oluşturur. Bu menkıbevi kaynak yeterince incelenmemiştir. 2008’de Hayati Yavuzer, Kemal’in hayatı ve Divanı hakkında uzun yıllar boyu bu konudaki esas anlatı olarak kalacak kapsamlı bir kitap yayımlamıştır. Yine de Kemal’in hayatının sonu hakkındaki belirsizlik devam etmektedir. Bu yazıda, makalenin birinci kısmında olduğu gibi (Birinci Kısım, “Eşrefoğlu’nun Sonu Ne Oldu?”) birincil kaynakların pek de ipucu vermeyen dilinin ötesine geçip bir şair ola- rak Kemal’in ününün yaygınlığına rağmen neden tarihi bir şahsiyet olarak karanlıkta kaldığını incelemeyi hedefliyorum. Bir 15. yy. eseri olan Anonim Velayetname, Ümmi Kemal’i yine ünlü ama karanlıkta kalmış bir başka şahsiyet olan Sultan Şücaüddin’le ilişkilendirir. Makalenin sonundaki ekte Anonim Velayetname’nin bu kısmının İngilizce çevirisi ve açıklamalar verilmiştir. ! ii ABSTRACT! The Making of a Sufi Order Between Heresy and Legitimacy: Bayrami-Mal!mis in the Ottoman Empire by F. Betul Yavuz Revolutionary currents with transformative ideals were part of Sufi religious identity during the late medieval Islamic period. This dissertation tries to elucidate this phenomenon by focusing on the historical evolution of the Bayrami-Mal!mi Sufi order within the Ottoman Empire. The scope of the study extends from the beginnings of the order during the ninth/fifteenth century until its partial demise by the end of the eleventh/seventeenth century. The Bayrami-Mal!miyya was marked by a reaction towards the established Sufi rituals of the time: adherents refused to wear Sufi clothes, take part in gatherings of remembrance of God, or rely upon imperial endowments for their livelihood. I suggest they carried some of the distinguishing signs of religiosity of the anarchic period between the Mongol attacks and the rise of the powerful Islamic Empires. Many local forms of Sufism had emerged, tied to charismatic, independent communities quite prevalent and powerful in their own domains. They often held particular visions regarding the saint, whose persona came to be defined in terms exceeding that of a spiritual master, often as a community elder or universal savior. Inspired by this period, Bayrami-Mal!mis reconstructed their teachings and affiliations as the social and political conditions shifted in Anatolia. While several p!rs were executed for heresy and messianic claims in the sixteenth century, the Order was able to put together a more prudent vision based on the writings of Ibn !Arabi (d. -

Mystical Islamic Poetry 5: Week 2 Stephen Hirtenstein Hajji Bayram and the Early Ottoman Tradition In order to understand the poetic tradition of the Ottomans, especially Sufi poetry, it is essential to have some understanding of the general historical background, political, social and above all, religious/spiritual. General Background The Ottoman dynasty took their name from ‘Uthmān (known in Turkish as Osman Gazi, 1258– 1326), one of many political leaders (known as beys) who carved out principalities for themselves under the Seljuk Empire. By pledging allegiance to the Seljuk sultan, these beys were given permission to set up as local lords, and in the case of Osman’s father, he was given a principality (beylik) close to the Sea of Marmara, which bordered on the weakening and ever-shrinking Byzantine Empire – as it turned out, this was fortuitous since they were far from the chaos of Mongol invasion, which destroyed everything that stood in its way including the ‘Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad, and close to the wealth of Byzantium, which was the real political prize. Osman was a dynamic leader and warrior, who harnessed the power of the ghazis (fighters for Islam), men who fought on the border because they believed in the religious duty of expanding the Islamic world (Dar al-Islam). Gradually Osman and his successors established themselves as the pre-eminent force not only on the western border but also throughout Anatolia, and just before he died in 1326, Osman captured from the Byzantines the all-important strategic city of Bursa, which became the first capital of the Ottomans. -

Prof. Abdurrahman Atçıl July 2017, 201 Pages This thesis deals with the ideas of Zayniyya dervishes toward Ibn ‘Arabi and his thought and traces the differences between the Central Asian and Anatolian dervishes in this regard. The early Zayniyya sheikhs Zayn al-Din Khwafi and ‘Abd al- Latif Qudsi, the respective founders of the Zayniyya tariqa in Central Asia and Anatolia, held a dim view of Ibn ‘Arabi’s thought, and saw the use of the science of letters as sufficient to implicate a person as heretic. In contrast to these early Zayniyya leaders, most prominent Anatolian Zayni dervishes later adopted a positive attitude toward Ibn ‘Arabi, and Sheikh Vefa, one of the more prominent Anatolian Zaynis, himself practiced the science of letters. I follow the changes in the stances toward Ibn ‘Arabi by investigating the opinions of different Zayni dervishes, from Central Asia and Anatolia, on five controversial topics related to Ibn ‘Arabi: the doctrine of oneness of being (wahda al-wujud), the doctrine of levels of existence (maratib al-wujud), and the issues of Pharaoh’s faith, the seal of sainthood (khatm al-walaya) and comparison of sainthood with prophethood, and the state of infidels in hell. -

Bu kitap, Ġbn Arabî'nin (v. 638/1240) en meĢhur takipçilerinden biri olan Sadreddin Konevî'nin (v. 673/1274) Miftâhu'l- gayb'ının ilk ve en hacimli Ģerhidir. Molla Fenârî'nin tasavvufî görüĢleri, ağırlıklı olarak varlık ve bilgi anlayıĢı çerçevesinde ĢekillenmiĢtir. Çünkü o da bir çok meseleyi mensubu bulunduğu Ekberî müfekkirler gibi, tasavvufun pratik boyutu üzerinde daha az durup, büyük ölçüde ontolojik ve epistemolojik perspektiften ele almaktadır. Bu noktada onun varlık anlayıĢı, Hakk'ın varlığının, eĢyânın tamamını kapsayan bir mutlak ve yegâne hakîkat olmasına dayanmaktadır. Molla Fanārī and the Miṣbāḥ Al-Uns: the Commentator and the Perfect Man

Prof. First of all, as the keynote speaker for this international symposium on University of Georgia Molla Fanārī, I would like to start by Athens, Ga., USA speaking about why holding a conference now on Mullā Shams al- dīn Muḥammad ibn Ḥamzah al- Fanārī (b. 751/1350-d. 834/1431)1 in Bursa is significant.2 Let us begin by looking at how Stanford Shaw, the leading Ottoman historian among 20th century scholars in the West, regarded Molla Fanārī. According to Shaw, Molla Fanārī made an essential contribution to the formation of the overall intellectual framework of Ottoman scholars by helping to set the concept of waḥdat ul-wujūd (unity of existence) into the very foundation of the Ottoman State. As Shaw stated, “The transition between the older Arab traditions and those developed under the Ottomans was provided by Davud-i Kayserī (d. 1350) and Molla Fanārī (1350-1431). Findley Scott Levi Copyright by Ayse Baltacioglu-Brammer 2016 Abstract This dissertation explores the Sunni-Shi‘ite divergence in the early modern period, not merely as religiously derived, but as a meticulously carried out geo-political battle that formed the base of the sectarian conflict in the region today. One of the few studies to utilize both Safavid and Ottoman primary sources within the framework of identity formation and propaganda, my study argues that the “religious dichotomy” between “Ottoman Sunnism” and “Safavid Shi‘ism” was a product of the Safavid- Ottoman geo-political and fiscal rivalry rather than its cause; it further holds that examining the Shiitization of Safavid Iran and Ottoman Anatolia within a larger geo- political framework is critical to understanding early modern Middle Eastern states and societies. At the time, the Shi‘ite population of Anatolia – called Kızılbaş (“red heads” in Turkish) – constituted the largest Muslim minority group in the Ottoman Empire and was the principal catalyst for conflict between the Ottoman and Safavid empires. Yet it was only after the politicization of the Safaviyya Sufi movement that Istanbul perceived its Kızılbaş subjects as a threat to its geo-political legitimacy and security in the volatile regions of central and eastern Anatolia, as well as the frontier regions of Iraq. -
